  1. Randy, yes love to stop in and say hi. Also a fly in would be great!
I had headers already as this RX-1 was a flying take off to be replaced with an APEX.

I did work with Barak to build a mount and sent the header for him to build around. This was his first RX-1 and he worked hard to make it fit but after a few set backs he realized there are differences between Apex and RX-1. At that point it was easier for me to complete the mount my self.  He’s a great welder and fabricator and probably has a jig built for the RX1 by now. I’d have no problem ordering from him in the future.

  2. The more I think through the remote oil tank idea I wonder if might be problematic.

Part of me wonders if having the tank that far away might mess with the scavenge pump's ability to clear the extra oil out of the engine.  And also in a steep climb the tank might end up lower than the engine and how would the oil pump do in that case trying to lift out of the tank?

But then again, usually I overthink things that "might not work" and  am proven wrong when people go out and do them with no trouble.

Like I always joke:  if everyone double thought things as much as I do, manned powered flight would still be theory LOL!

Valid point. I had the thought of mounting it up high like a header fuel tank. Not sure the effort and worry would be worth it for the slight CG change. I could mount a decent size header tank aft of the baggage compartment.... For now I’ll go with lead in the tail and get other systems up and functioning. Appreciate the ideas!

  3. I have the avid plus or fat avid, the fuselage was stretched 18" from factory, I bought the adapter plate that teal made and used the rotax c drive, I could use a quieter muffler but other than that it preforms very well.

Oh yes I recall that one. Really nice job! Post more videos or pictures when you get time. Thanks

  4. Brett thanks! I was going to mount my oil tank at the firewall airbox side. But that’s a good idea!

Oh man tell me more! Marshawk what Avid? Did you work on this one with Teal? Stretched?
So many questions:) sorry and Thanks!

  5. Just like to start out and say thanks to all of the members in amazing combined wealth of knowledge!

After a few lengthy setbacks with my engine mount. I was finally able to get it completed. Next task will be building a new firewall.

Still looking for a kit fox round cow or Avid MK for cowling to modify to fit my boot Cowl. Thanks!

  6. John, do you have any updates? Really appreciate the pictures! I had some set backs on my Model C/ RX-1 mount and working to fix that now.

  7. No I did not do that my self. The previous owner welded it out of 1/2 conduit. I haven’t used it yet but could take pictures of the design when the snow melts:)

  8. What do you guys think about fabing in a recess in the firewall to mount the RX1 aft of firewall center line 1.5”-2”.
I have an original C cowling that I’m moding the cowling anyway but would help with the fit and CG.

Pros/Cons any advice or input is much appreciated!

  9. Hey thanks everyone for sharing and for the support! Definitely helps. Having hard earned 300 plus free flight paragliding hours, knowing intimately the weather. I swore I’d never be “that guy” and as I hit the willows I knew immediately the mistakes I made with absolute clarity. Wasn’t Weather Knowledge that got me but it definitely did clouded my judgement. My own inability to judge my aircraft and more importantly my own limitations!

Funny the line between getting lucky and not  (I’ve been pushing the lucky side). At the end of the day that is experience and I am very thankful to have gained this without being injured.
    Thanks again

  10. Damn...   Sorry about that mishap Tony.  Crap.

Sure hope that you might change your plans and stick with the Avid!  Rick's Yamaha sure will be a mega performer in that thing!

Oh and if you don't mind, what did the helicopter ride cost you?  I am self insured myself and wonder what that might cost me if I ever needed a lift.

It was a hell of an ordeal but I was lucky enough to have a few friends help out. No one could get through the Alaska range early enough so I had to take a charter PA 12 out which was $190 one-way so I could have it apart and ready for 3 loads. R-44 flew up from Anchorage at $875 an hr. 3.5hrs in total.  Just dropped off near Anchorage, sold for $5500. Plan is to put that money towards a PA 16 and keep my Avid project for the winter.

  11.  I always wanted to get my plane home but not like this. After crashing at Chelle lake cabin I was in for one hell of a recovery. Pilot error, the short is I fucked up trying to get into a 800’ bumpy strip. On the 4th attempt, I aborted(2nd that direction)and clipped some willows at the end and went in... Trying to stay in ground effect to the last second wasn’t enough to get me over the taller willows and down I went. Was prepared and had my helmet on but luckily didn’t use it. Got lucky with the willows (depends on how you look at it) Very smooth landing and didn’t set of ELT.

lots of factors contributed, a few days out from cataract surgery, nill wind turn to a tail wind and uphill slope was more then I thought, early season freshness, being tired, engine was stronger then ever after carb rebuild, gave me a false sense of confidence etc..I put a few calls for insurance quote on Friday but to little to late.
I’m now short on time and out of money after the heli recovery. With a heavy heart I’ll  probably donate the 120 Talkeetna build a plane of UAF and sell my model C /RX-1 project...

  12. This is great! I'm doing a model c /RX-1 now. How is your progress going? I like the idea of doing the "extending the pedals mod". What are you doning for fitting the cowling?

    Thanks!

  13. Thanks for the add guys! I’ve learned allot from the wealth of information on this site in my short time here. I’m in the middle of a C model/RX-1 rebuild up in Fairbanks, Alaska. Happy to send some PayPal cash. Thanks again! Tony
