A question for everyone. I am considering a mint condition Avid Model C that has been in heated storage for 15 years. The original builder has flown it and registered it as an amateur built aircraft. (Here in Canada) - I do not know if this is considered a basic ultralight or advanced, or another category on its own. What would be the benefit or disadvantage of amateur built category?
    Thanks

    Seat ideas
Hello I have an original Avid Model C sling seat in the plane. Its showing long in the teeth and is quite uncomfortable. Looking for some ideas and / or a different cloth with cushioning. I saw a guy on youtube had a kitfox one with blue plush seats that looked really comfortable compared to the Avid. Please help...

Thank you for providing that - any idea why the Solo Gross Weight for a Speedwing is 580 lbs? Why wouldn't it state 1150 lbs pertaining to the MK IV documentation? Empty weight shows 510 lbs, 580 lbs is only 70 lbs more - seems like I would need to lose a lot of weight if I followed those numbers.... =)

Just reviewing the numbers under the Speed Wing Commuter Section provided by Jim - I know Transport Canada will ask me what these things mean exactly, since there are no side labels can someone confirm what I am seeing here and fill in errors and all the ???? or the blanks. Really appreciate the help!
    ..
Length of Aircraft (Nose to tail) - 23ft 11.5 in.
Wing Area = 97.31 sq ft
    ???? = 42 in
    ???? = 51 in
    ???? = 5.50
    ???? = 9.36 lbs
    ???? = 17ft
    ???? = 17ft
    ???? = 7 ft. 9.5 in
    ???? = 67 in
    Empty Weight = 450 lbs.
    Gross Weight = 911 lbs.
    Usable Weight = 491 lbs
Fuel Tank Size (single wing tank) = 18 gal
Fuel burn approximate = 3.5 gal/hr (depends on the engine and rpm setting???)
Range no reserve = 566 miles (Statute miles I would think not nautical miles)
Recommended prop??? = 64" ground adjustable (Seems this would depend on the engine?

Solo - 580 lbs (why only 580 lbs gross weight when solo???????)
    Cruise Speed = 110mph
    Stall Speed = 33 mph
Never Exceed Speed = 125 mph

Best Angle of climb = 52 mph
    ???? = 125 ft
    ???? = 250 ft
    ???? = 500 ft
Service ceiling ???? = 20000 ft (seems odd - unpressurized cabin)

Dual - 911 lbs gross weight
    Cruise = 110 mph
    Stall Speed = 40 mph
Never Exceed Speed = 125 mph

Be most appreciated if you find that page. It looks like gross is 911 lbs, empty is 491 lbs. However I don't know if the aerobat wing is the same as the speed wing, or if it is a different wing all together. That pics shows a trike gear. Essentially I will need some sort of documentation to go back to Transport Canada airworthiness inspector with.

Thanks Jim - I've heard all kinds of things from a lot of places saying if you add the wing extension kit on the speedwing it increases the max gross weight - I dunno, but right now my model C is serial # 377. It has a max gross weight of 850, usable weight of 400 lbs. I would like to get that up a bit if I could somehow, as it would allow me to have a bit more fuel and two adults for a cross country flight. The plane has the larger fuel tanks, so thats a plus....
But trying to clarify what the gross weight could be and how is really my question , I don't know who would know that now..

Avid Model C - Gross Weight
Hello everyone, this is a strange question. Recently I have had to go through the paperwork of a plane I'm considering purchasing. The Special Certificate of Airworthiness could not be found by the owner, so I reached out to Transport Canada. They advised, there was a Special C of A in place, however they could not find the copy of the document, and hence they went back to the builder. He advised the gross weight was 850 lbs on the placard, however the gross weight could be in the 900 lbs range. The builder ( who is also the seller ) has told me that there should be a way to get the aircraft the higher gross weight.
So I don't believe everything I always hear, so I'm asking those of you that know, can a Model C Avid with a Speedwing gross weight be changed from 850 lbs to 900 lbs + ?
    Thx

    Kissimmee Florida area Avid Flyers?
Hi all, flying into Orlando, Florida in the next couple of days, staying out in Kissimee - anyone have an Avid fly near this area? I'm purchasing a plane, and taking ownership when I get back pending the paperwork from Transport Canada - I never flew in an Avid before and was wondering if I could get an early morning flight with someone before it gets to hot...
Always nice to see other peoples planes in any case and make some new friends...
Hope to hear from someone... I just missed Sun n Fun  =(

    Avid Flyer Model C Seat
Well, I'm looking at this Model C Avid, and the bench seat is, well, I don't know the right word for it - minimalist, but it really is the poorest looking part of this plane... The lacing is fine, but the bench seat itself, doesn't have much support. I'm looking for options, I have read here that some people replace foam, and the fabric - but has anyone installed a seat similar to fishing boat seat, or a kayak seat with lumbar / back support? I think the right kayak seat could be nice - if it has the support , and light - but out of the kayak seats I've tried ( not fishing kayak seats though ) - most normal kayak seats suck...
Some example links below to get people talking / thinking about the idea.

We are in the process now of going through the official paperwork (or lack there of) , I spoke with Transport Canada and found that there is a valid c of r in place. Now I asked them to find the records to the c of a. Owner can't find the official papers, so I've tasked him to find the papers and all the logs. I have the build log, weight and balance, and the fuel flow reports. I have the applications, and flight time / engine time. But need a couple of other things here in Canada (technical and journey logs and that c of a) to seal the deal
If there was no c of a in place currently, which I'm told there is he just paid for it 2 months ago for another year, would cause me an entire level of pain I don't want to go through with Transport Canada. =)
Anyhow, I think things will come together, we are definately coming closer to making things happen. I'm just learning more and more about the aircraft every week. I'm in the process now of digitizing all the paperwork and storing it on a backup and nas system. There is quite a bit of documentation that I have right back to 1988 from Avid themselves... This plane is an Avid Model C 100% confirmed with a Speed Wing. It has the wooden longeron down the bottom of the plane. I also found out it does not have the elevator stops put in place, so that has to get done, per the UK safety bulletin I read online to protect the studs on either side of the elevator shaft from cracking due to overextension and torsion.

Ok so I actually got the real story from the previous owner yesterday about the tail wheel. The stock single spring broke apparently which caused the issue. I managed to crawl under the plane and saw the tube had a smack in it pushing it up. The photo shows a new tailwheel spring. Wish he had to tell me that in the beginning.
I also found out the tailwheel assembly is 39 lbs. That seems really heavy. I'm sure if I changed it out to something lighter it would affect the c of g and bring it forward. But I will be upgrading to a more robust assembly with pneumatic tire.
So now that we have the real story on how it happened, I guess I need to figure out the best way to straighten the pipe, brace it or strength it for the future,. The fabric upon closer inspection is open underneath, so I maybe able to simple bring the fabric back together and glue or something....
I need your revised opinions again,

    Rotax 532UL Charging Watts
Hello all, I am looking to add a fairly simplistic electrical system to charge some small devices and EFIS instruments I am developing with Raspberry Pi small computers. These do not require an much power, but I need to install a small 12v battery. I was hoping to get away with something a like a 12v 7AH battery, just to keep weight low, but I do not know how much charging capacity the Rotax532UL stator has. Everything I find online references the AC side of things, but I do not know what the regulator can dish out to the battery. Otherwise, all my gear will just use up the juice in the battery and nothing is getting put back in... So I need to figure out how much is going in, so I can manage the power use effectively...
Anyone know the answer to this? I know the 582 has a larger regulator than the 532, so I really need to know before I add an EFIS instrument 5v 2-1/2amps, charging system for the handheld ICOM radio, electronic ACI stall warning system (12v - 1amp or less), GPS (5v 2-1/2amp). I may install LED Wig Wag lights, but again that will be a very small electrical load. All these things together though, thats what I'm thinking about this for.
I know these 532's were on Snowmobiles, and those snowmobile's had, hand and seat warmers, but again that was coming from the battery - whether is was ever going back into the battery via the rotax stator / regulator who knows, but sleds do have sometimes a fair load on them
I can't find the numbers to help me out, so thats why I'm posting here...

Yeap, I will try that Sioux201 first - I will be moving the aircraft to my hanger in about 2 months from now, its staying where it is now until the weather improves here in Canada ( snow, salt, wind..... grrrrr....) So in any case, I will follow your idea first, to see if anything is out of shape at that point. The aircraft is going to be gone over as much as I can without ripping things apart before we attempt any flights, but we do expect to have some time in this summer with any luck. Rotax 532 Engine is getting opened up and looked at by a Rotax Certified Mechanic, first thing.... That gives me the time to address this issue and go through the plane... The aircraft has flown before, but did not burn off the required 25 hours by Transport Canada to consider it passenger safe, so I'm going to reset the clock and burn off 25 hours. Aircraft flew very well by those that were present the flights it did have, so that is comforting... This appeared damage, looks minor, so I just want to fix it right, than with any luck the cobwebs should be cleaned and blown off her in my inspections.

    Need help
I purchased an Avid Flyer Model C - it has one single piece of damage from some sort of landing which caused this damage. Two questions, I've never worked with this fabric before, and I'm looking to minimize the cutting of fabric and damage to repair
    - do I cut from the bottom and peel back or cut from the side to uncover the  bent pipe?
Next question, how do suspect this happened? (Tail wheel must have gone up and struck the rudder? I knew a lot of people that were there that day and the landings were perfect by a longtime pro, so it wasn't the builder that flew the aircraft. It flew on a grass strip - is this tailwheel not up to the task, weak by design? Last thing I want is to have to deal with a tail wheel that impacts the rudder and causes damage every couple of flights.
Pic attached, thanks again for your help and comments.

  21. krazycanuck2011 added a post in a topic certificate of conformity

Hi Gilutm, the Avid Model C that I purchased was initally built as Amateur built aircraft in Canada. It is similar to what you are describing however Transport Canada Inspectors had to come out and conduct a multitude of inspections and tests as the aircraft was being built. I suspect it maybe the same in Romania as well, in Canada our Advanced Ultralight category is the same as your primary ultralight. Your Advanced Ultralight seems to be the same as our Amateur built category. I do not know if the current owner would be able to supply that cert for you, but its worth a shot.
Its important for me, to keep the Amateur built identification as it allows me to easily fly all over North America, even to the US if I wanted to, with special protocols of course....
    Lots of red tape....

Thanks guys, I have Lowell, fabbing me a gear towards the end of March, I will be flying into Florida in April with my family and will get him to ship it to me there to take back to Canada with me. Seems like a nice alternative (wide gear that provides good taxi stability with a much more robust build than the stock bungee gear.

Bush Gear options for Avid Model C
Hello everyone, I am purchasing a very low time, indoor always in heated enviroment, Avide flyer model c. I am interested in replacing the gear while I am re-certing the aircraft for here in Canada as airworthy.
I have seen pics of Lowell Fitt's of "Highwing LLC" that look pretty nice. I am open to other alternatives though as well, the most important thing is that its a good solid gear that is not going to break, is wider and stable and may be higher than stock. I don't expect to be giving the gear an exceptionally hard time, but I do think there could be a bad landing every now and again as I get familiar with the aircraft.
I look forward to your reply as well as other options you may know about for me to checkout. Price is a concern, so it has to stay on the normal side of things, not ludicrously expensive.
Also I don't have Lowell Fitt's contact details if any of you have them that would be great!
Please feel free to list off options for gears as well as ballpark pricing. Pics always welcome!

  24. krazycanuck2011 added a post in a topic Finalizing a deal on an Avid Model C

Good to know, I was told by Mark at Avid to look over those wing rib tails as well. Is that the piece between the trailing edge of the wing and the flaperon itself? Is the trailing edge of the wing, tor just the joining section to the piece that connects the flaperon to the wing the problem child to look at? I will look at both, but is the trailing edge of the wing itself a problem child as well?
    Thx

Thanks for that 1avidflyer - I will take a look at the ribs in the horizontal stab and vertical fin ( as much as you can with fingers... - fabric is on ) - I am making sure the paperwork is in order for sure. Regarding the fuel, here in Canada we have Octane 87, Octane 89, Octane 91 - I cannot determine if any of these have Ethanol in them... I know when I visited the US sometimes you would see E85, but is there normally Ethanol in Octane 87, if it just says Octane 87 at the pump?
Also for a Rotax 532, what is the recommended Octane 89, 91, or 93? to mix... Also I guess while I'm totally here asking questions, what is the mix ratio?
Thx, keep in coming people, I need to know what to look for...
