Yes the tailwheel would break free as it is intended. I took the cam of so it wouldn't break free after reading some other posts. I sure like the handling a lot more without it breaking free unexpectedly. The assembly is bolted to the lower spring. And yes I'm looking to upgrade too!

Here is my second picture upload attempt. One thing about the beefier spring is your aoa on the ground will be reduced slightly. If you are running bigger tires on the front it doesn't matter. Also, I have a sube hanging on the front, with extra weight at the back so a beefier spring is needed to take that extra weight. I think a heavier spring that is actually a spring is the way to go. The one I bought from Brett could be easily bent and the tailwheel broke off right at the mount kicking the **** out of my rudder as the springs to the horns dragged it along.

Here is what I did. The change up I bought from airdale broke. The top spring is the original avid with the end cut off. The lower is a modified trailer spring.file://localhost/Users/admin/Pictures/iPhoto%20Library/Originals/2013/21-Sep-13/IMG_1138.JPGfile://localhost/Users/admin/Pictures/iPhoto%20Library/Originals/2013/21-Sep-13/IMG_1136.JPG
Sorry guys. Need to learn how to post a picture.

Go to your local machine shop that can sell you a spring a little wider that what is on there now. Match the length and angle. Drill the hole to match the original so your original lays over the new one. Grind the edge of the slightly wider spring to fit the tailwheel mount. You will need a press to get the bend right. Cost me about 30 bucks and it is superior to the original setup. You do need the extra bolt in back to keep it all aligned. I'll take a pic tonight on my way home. Cheers. B

Did a little looking and found some detail here http://www.faa.gov/aircraft/gen_av/ultralights/sfa/. Looks pretty straight forward as far as paper work. Did I mention I hate paper?

Does uncle Sam let a Canadian fly in with an advanced ultralight license? Would have to check out the cross border requirements to fly over there.

I'm right at Whitehorse. I generally fly off of 2800 foot strip on the west side of Whitehorse called "cousin's airstrip". There are a few ultralights around but I only know of one Avid magnum that a buddy has. A few chinooks and challengers. Couple of kitfoxes but I don't think they are getting any use. Lots of cubs, aeroncas, cessnas etc. around here. There was a flyin down at carcross today but -26 celc. is down right cold in my plane so I didn't go. Much below -15 and the heat just doesn't keep up. I'll go on google earth and check out the route. I think for the most part people follow the Alaska highway over here. Cheers.

I know that my ea81 is mechanically on spec. It was a total rebuild, everything new, done by a 'professional' while the previous owner still had it. It runs perfect.I will compression test it though just to know. Burns no oil and fires up like it should. Haven't checked the timing but I see that the distributer is turned as far as it can go for the advance. Warp drive actually recommended cutting the prop down because of the 1.84 reduction. He also said that the 68 inch would still be lots of prop if I up the horsepower later. Apparently there are many smaller props running with a lot more power on gyros. It does have an air filter(foam) and carb heat box system. I do notice that the engine doesn't slow down with carb heat applied like you see on aviation engines(0-320). I'm thinking that is because of the hot water running through the intake. I'm going to take the filter out and see if that lets it breath better. Meanwhile I'll start disassemble on the other one to get the cam sent away. Thanks. Ben

Looking forward to your performance results. 912 comes in almost 100 pounds lighter. Is your engine the 80 horse version?

Gentlemen. I started at 8.5 degrees but could only pull 4200 rpm static. I took this up to 4425 (needle tach) with 7 degrees static. Going to turn it back to 8.5 to see if it does grab more air and actually get up and go. Too flat with the pitch versus the torque range of the engine with a stock cam is what I'm thinking. By the way I'm no expert. Ben

Just did a little math and the numbers do seem to jive. 582 total weight is 585empty +420crew+90fuel=1095 for 700 fpm.(2 passengers). EA81 total weight is 712empty weight+200me+90fuel=1002 for 800fpm@65. I have the avid wide gear, heavy duty truss, big skis and heavy duty custom tail spring.(home made). I better get with it and up my horsepower. Still waiting for that elusive 912 who must be viewing this to put it on record. B

You know your stuff Ed. I do have a Reductions 1.84:1 ea81. I have another engine that I am planning on building up. That way the plane keeps flying while I get this other one built.

Thanks Ed. You know what I'm getting at though. Being an ea81 man I know what my plane will and won't do. I know what it weighs and I know how much fuel is going through it. I would like someone with a 912 powered mark IV HH STOL to chime in with the real goods. What does it weigh? What can it do? At what altitude above sea level? My gross is set at 1200 because the plane was previously on floats. With 2 190 pound men and more than half fuel it needs lots of room and full flaps in the winter to get of the ground. (Full gross) Don't have any good climb numbers but 300+ ish with that much load seems it. My engine is basically stock. Opened up exhaust and 2 barrel carter. Simple setup that purrs like a kitten. 68(was 70 cut down) inch warp dive 3 blade set at 7 degrees. Maybe other sube operators with bigger power can post as well. Should I do the cam mod and shave the heads? Does a 912 weigh in at 620 pounds.(Lighter FWF thus no tail counter weight) Will that same plane at gross still be the hotrod everyone seems to think. Cheers. Ben

I'm still curious what a mark IV with the 912 empty weight is. Is it 50 lbs lighter than a sube? is it 100 lbs lighter? And how does this translate into performance? Anybody out there reading this actually flying one? Cheers gents.Ben

I am wondering what are the real numbers for a 912 install on a mark IV. What is the real weight. What are some real performance numbers? Everybody likes slamming the subes but I'm wondering how much better the 912 versions really are.

Just jumping back to the empty weight. I really doubt the stated empty weight with the subaru and all the mods is as low as they are saying. My stock engine Ea81 mark IV heavy hauler comes in well over 700 plus weight on the back for cg depending if it's on wheels or floats. With just me and full fuel it needs 500 feet to think about getting of the ground. (2200 msl) Best climb is 800 fpm. Likes to cruise at 70 with engine turning 4000. (1.84:1 reduction.) Still playing with prop pitch for the best tradeoff. The beauty of the sube is cheap reliability. I'm not sure if the airdale stretch eliminates the added weight needed for cg with the sube. Either way check that empty weight.

  19. IFMT added a post in a topic EA 81 Dual pickup distributer

Thanks for the responses. I have been rounding everything up that I need. Need to due a little research on the voltage going to the LS 1 module/coil pack. Going to look it up on shop key. Pretty sure it is full (12.6) system voltage but just to be sure I don't want to overvolt the coil. Talked to the fellow down in south carolina but he isn't interested in selling me just the wiring harness and technical advice. Can't say I blame him though. Budget on mine so far is: 2 used donor distributers. $40.00. 1 MSD coil selector $85.00. 2 Standard LS 1 module/coils $180.00 (new). Machining Aluminum 6061 mounting plate. $40.00. 2 LS1 unassembled module connectors. $20.00. Add to this the adventure of putting it together. Mine will be stock advance curve-no vacuum. Haven't got the switches, wiring, loom and nicknacks. Total so far $365. New cap and rotor added to this. This price is FOB Yukon so I think I'm coming in at less than half of importing.

  22. IFMT added a post in a topic EA 81 Dual pickup distributer

Thanks Ed. I do have the article about how to put in the new plate and dual pickups. Fairly straight forward. Just a matter of rounding up the parts. The gm LS 1 setup is actually cheaper than the "paul messinger?" setup with separate module and coil. Flying up here in the Yukon doesn't always leave a lot of good landing spots. I know the single pickup/module in my setup runs great and is reliable but module are not like points that start to warn you that things are going bad. I know about the setup from ram and that looks great just by the the time I ship my dizzy down and back and their charge I'll be around $750+. I am going to see if they will sell me just the pieces I can't get locally. Cheers

    EA 81 Dual pickup distributer
Good day everyone. Does anyone have any experience with the dual pickup distributer (nippondenso) and GM LS 1 module/coil pack. Can the LS 1 coil accept 12 volts? Do you need a resistor? Diagram would be great. Thanks.

    ICOM A20 PTT
Hello everyone. Anybody using an ICOM a20 with a ptt in the control stick? I have a sigtronics headset with electret mic. Can I just plug into the adapter directly. The diagrams for wiring show a resistor parrallel to the mic. Any experience out there? Thanks

  25. IFMT added a post in a topic Airdale Wide Gear

I have a question about how many wraps on the 100 inch bungee. I have read to put 8 full wraps. Does this mean counting the wraps on the bottom around the gear? If so 8 wraps around the bottom and back to the "post" makes for 7 wraps over the seat truss. Also does anyone know if a complete heavy duty seat truss is available from airdale? Mines a little bent. Bad landing.
