I would sacrifice 10-20 lbs for more hp. I really prefer air cooled to water cooled but being water cooled does have a couple advantages. I don't think reliability is an issue anymore, at least with the currently used 2 strokes.

Anybody want to take a shot at a 582 including cooling system?  Forget what Rotax states. Keep seeing a model 1 on barnstormers w/582 listed at 426 lbs. empty. Don't think so!

All the engine manufacturers fudge on their engine weights. Just part of the game they play. Same as kit companies fudge on airframe weights.

As a comparison, the UL260 is 159 lbs. And a little more pricy. Well, maybe a lot more.  Not many used ones out there.

Funny you posted this. I was just considering a Jab for my model 2. I am not sure if the Hirth and I are going to become friends. A Jab is currently the only option available at this time. If I can't make friends with the Hirth, then time to part company. Next few days will tell.

I think the correct length of the originals are 2 27/32. I made a couple temporary replacements from AN5 bolts in case of emergency. Same strength as the pins, just used the shank and head of a long bolt. They would be used in a temp situation but would work long term as far as strength is concerned. Thanks!

    Wing pins
Anybody have a lead on where to buy replacement spar pins? AS&S or LEAF doesn't carry them that big. Otherwise I'll just order AN5 bolts to replace them. I misplaced one today and thought losing one would mean your grounded till its found or replaced. AN bolts and castle nuts will work fine, just the pins are quicker for those of us that fold the wings constantly. I would say Kitfox probably still uses the same pin in the newer models so they might have them at a nice price.

I think Aircraft Spruce has a breakdown in their catalog. There are a couple of washers or spacers, retaining ring, bearing, etc in the mix, maybe one is missing or out of order. Should be smooth operating but no wiggle or loose parts to move around. The nut will tighten to a certain point and then a locking pin. Something may be worn to allow the nut to tighten but still allow some slack. Compare it with the diagram in their catalog and go from there. Its hard to pinpoint unless one has it in their hands.

I have the same tailwheel and no wiggle in it. Where is the wiggle?

    Weather
Looked like a good day to play with the Fox but ended up with 20 mph winds. Here in the mountains, 20 mph wind is borderline crazy with the narrow valleys. Life in the mountains!

I'll try to keep my 3rd class as long as possible just due to old habits, even though I rarely fly anything above a light sport. I located another AME that is still doing 3rd class currently during whatever one calls this situation we are in. Night flying is out in these mountains with a 2 stroke, single engine aircraft. Plus most of our strips are unlighted anyway. But at least I have another option down the road. The Fox will probably be my last go at rebuilding another plane so all is good. Now that its finished, just waiting on better weather.

Somebody said one time that one had to do the questionnaire online for sport pilot. I am guessing that is for new students only. Thanks!

    Sport Pilot
Since I haven't followed it very much, what is the process from converting from a private license to sport pilot license. Since I am current as a private now, it may be a while before I can schedule a 3rd class phy.

Don't let it dishearten you! One step at a time and the information and help is out there. Much of it is on here. Yes parts are high (Rotax) but many used parts around also. A model 2 will do good on several 2 stroke engines also. Everybody likes or wants 4 strokes but the 2 strokes have advantages. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to overhaul, lighter, requires a little more maint but easier to maintain, and an educated owner has the reliability of many 4 strokes.  So do a little research and dig in and have fun. Besides, you've got a nice looking plane, so its worth the time and work!

Several states have shut down their borders. WVa has not yet, since we have very few cases of the virus (12) but travel is not recommended outside or into the state.

    Going crazy
Don't know about anybody else, but even here in Hillbilly land people are going crazy in buying stuff to hoard. Seems they have already or going to shut down about everything. Most of the scare tatics are caused by the news reporters and press. And am sure its worse in other places besides here. It really isn't so much the local people as it is the suppliers trying to get the stuff shipped in to the stores. If it isn't the yuppies, yappies, or doomsday yoyo's going into a panic, things would carry on pretty much normal around here. Social distancing around here is pretty much a way of life and always has been just because of where we live. I guess I am in a b#t&hie mood this morning, but I rarely watch the news lately. Just tired of listening to all the bull&%#*. Alright, the rant is over!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Rotax prices and 912 ownership. A used engine is worth more in parts than whole.
