  1. That Grove gear looks familiar.  I sold a gear that same color to a gal in Ohio or somewheres in that area.  Any blue magic marker numbers showing how the mounts attach?  My gear was actually for a nose wheel setup.  JImChuk

No blue marks on it, got it from a guy in Washington state.

  2. Since I have recently acquired a 4 kit the 3 kit is on the chopping block. I would keep it for a rainy day but with a 1/2 hangar space is tight.

Need to clarify, the Grove gear, the Khar 9mm and the lead shot bags in photo #2 do not go with it and are not for sale., the yellow gear mounted on the fuselage is sold with it.

    First $7,500 takes it.

  3. Got most of the control system removed along with the floorboards. The flap lever bolt seems to hit the frame tube, not sure how it got put in but it sure doesn't want to come out. smile.gif

  4. Finally got the half hanger sorted out, lights installed etc, and actually did some work on (removed) the rudder pedals. Floor plywood is starting to crumble due to age and lack of finish. Going to remove all the controls, brace the fuselage sides, reshape/enlarge the tail feathers and build new rudder pedals with proper geometry and re-powdercoat everything, Going to make the tail similar to Av8r3400's and copy his fuselage and rudder pedal mods.

I want to update the controls and wing to KF4 but every time I talk to KF about it I seem to get the hard sell "buy the whole 4 wing quick-build" instead of these are the parts you need to swap out and this is the cost.  Same thing with the control system. They act like they don't want to sell the parts. I may have to flatten the wing and build a 4 control system the hard way?

  5. Looks really nice TJay!  When do we get the first flight reports?  I went back and looked for pictures of your build, trying to see how you widened the area around the doors.  Never really did find any.  Must have looked in the wrong place.  JImChuk

Once all the bugs are worked out I will do some flight testing. My home brew widening is nothing special

TJay, I'm about to widen my 3 and would like to copy what you have done rather than simply order the Murle kit. Could you post some additional pictures of it? Top weld, middle, front back and what tube size(s)? Pretty please?

  6. Hey guys

I want to put similar side triangle windows on my Model C that is found on the Mark IVs .  I would appreciate a photo or two of what the installed window looks like close up. I understand my install may be different given mounting features.

    Thanks in advance !

    Philip

Phillip,  I wish I knew if late model Kitfox aluminum triangle windows would fit your C - They fit the early model 1-4 Kitfoxes too.  I have a new, unused, pair that I would sell for half of new price, whatever that is.  EDMO

    EDMO,

I'll take them if nobody else wants them.

Good - Can you check with Kitfox for a price for a pair with aluminum frames?  I am having terrible headaches and ringing in ears from radiation - Just don't feel like doing any more than I have to right now.  EDMO

    Will call KF tomorrow.

  8. When it comes to water based cleaners yes, most substitutions will work. but some evaporate differently then others, some may leave a residue that could act like a release agent on your topcoats.  Read the product sheets carefully.  I worked in the paint industry for twenty years as a painter, tech rep and factory sales rep, for Akzo, (Sikkens), Standox, PPG, Sherwin Williams and Poly Fiber. I'll just say this, gun cleaner is usually made from recycled solvents, it can have silicone, glycol, oil, water and other nasties in it that I would't want anywhere near any my paint work.  There's a reason it's cheaper than a pure solvent. Same reason I wont use recycled rags on anything I'm painting.  Your el-cheapo lacquer thinners, (the 5 gallon pail types) are also usually recycled and contains the same crap. Even after washing a gun out with the cheap crap, I'll still put a few ounces of $50+ a gallon thinner/reducer thru the gun just to clear the crap out.

I left some el-cheapo gun cleaner type thinner in a cup of a not-so-cheap Devilbiss spray gun for about a month once and opened the cup to find the bottom of it all corroded. That can only happen to an aluminum cup from water!

A blending solvent is usually the purest virgin solvent you can get.

  9. Any substitution is asking for trouble. It might work, it might not. Doesn't matter if somebody else got away with it before either. MEK, Acetone and lacquer thinner are very different solvents!

  10. Look in the classifieds, there is a guy (me) selling a complete Whelen set as supplied by Kitfox for quite a bit less than new. ;)

  11. ☝️x2

I've owned and flown both, adding the KF4-7 airfoil now would be the single best value add mod you could do IMHO. That, even assuming you paid full retail price for the new ribs and flaperons from KF Aircraft. There is a strong market for the model 1-3 ribs and flaperons as they are no longer produced. Doesn't add any additional build time really and the net OOP cost would be well worth it.

Welcome, looking forward to following your build progress. Sure hope you get more done than the first three owners!

That was my original thought too. The question is if I use the KF4 wing what are the limitations to it going past 100mph? What exactly is the limiting issue(s) with the KF3 VNE, windscreen, spars, wing construction, spar carry-through, tail, wing struts?

  12. Welcome Ronin,  We like building photos - Keep posting.  Are you buying new tanks?  EDMO

That is my intention. I thought of sealing the one I have but I'm not too keen on slosh sealers.

  13. Hello,

Just picked up a pretty much untouched K3 kit #807. I'm the 4th owner. Controls are in the fuselage and that's about it. I plan on a 912, 80 or 100hp whichever I find at the right time. I'll also be going with a Grove gear setup. Planning on the widebody mod, 4 control system, increased area rudder & elevator, electric pitch trim and a glass panel. The covering will be Stewarts glues, Superflite cloth, Airtech primer and likely Aerothane topcoat. This is the same system Ran's uses and Randy's planes always look great. I may just go all waterborne too so who knows right now. Will have a few parts for sale shortly, 13g fiberglass right wing tank, 6g aluminum left wing tank and the bungee gear.
