  1. Yamma-Fox added a post in a topic Washout... teach me!

Thanks guys.  Yeah I'm running the stolspeed VGs.  I'll ref the builder's manual and check to see where my washout is set.
I know it can be adjusted up on the top of the lift strut attach points.
If you have a lot of washout set what is the effect?  More draggy?

    Washout... teach me!
Planning on doing the  factory wing extensions on my short wing KF5.
Think the washout will need to be reset?  (The KF instructions do not specify to do so)
And bigger picture: what is the effect of having more (or less) washout than spec?

Short hijack here...  One of my favorite books written by an Alaska flying warden back in the 70s and 80s.  Great stories in here and this topic reminds me of one where he was holed up in a shack with crazy winds... the (supercub?) was actually flying in the tiedown ropes!  Read the book to see the rest of the story when they decided to fly it out!
And BTW my favorite story is Chapter 18!  Just about died laughing!

Oh and it always amazes me how strong steel is. When I was building my mount I kept asking myself if it will be able to hold 500-600lbs of thrust.  Then I realized that it really comes down to merely the THREADS on the AN4 bolts / nuts!

From some of the Yamaha mounts Ive seen (that are working just fine) and also my old highly cantilevered sub NSI mount, I would say that the most other mounts must be overbuilt.
Maybe draw something up that is very lightly built and run it through a FEM / FEA program to see what it is calculated to hold up to.

Yeah Mark it sure makes no difference to me what map we use.  But others have been able to post off my link, here's a screenshot of the current map:

Yeah I did use the share link function in what I posted here.  But this is the first time I've created a map like this.  Maybe there is a better way?

Ok the other map we had hit a limit and wanted $120 a year to continue so I made up a new one.

  17. Yamma-Fox added a post in a topic Gross weight increase Kitfox IV 1050-1200

I don't have the instructions but the good news is that yes alot of over gross flying has inevitably happened in Kitfoxes and I believe they still claim zero in flight structural failures with all the kits they have sold (as told to me by John McBean at OSH 2017)

Well it is a "35" size which is at least physically big.  But you are definitely right, it would be good to have an amp-hr rating and it is probably smart to go with the one that I know better.
I love my antigravity start pack and this battery has a jump start function where it disconnects and holds reserve power for an extra start.  20amp-hr and says its good for cylce engines up to 2200cc and 700HP which is nice in case I decide to turbo this thing.

Alright well I'm gonna give this a shot.
Now everyone can tell me how it wont work, but I'm gonna waste some time and $80 on it and see if I can go from 'scratched pretty damn bad' to 'that actually looks pretty decent'.
I'll be happy if I can get to pretty decent because that is how a new one looks after a year or two anyhow.

  21. Yamma-Fox added a post in a topic YAMAHA RX-1 (140 HP) install in Kitfox 5

A lot of Apexes are mid-conversion at this time but only a small number flying.  By years end that will change big time there are a few RX-1 powered KF4s out flying.

Got the round cowl fit up.  Did a kind of boot cowl thing over the original.  Plenty of room in the round cowl for the Yamaha!
Next is the float install.  Getting things ready for that:

YAMAHA RX-1 (140 HP) install in Kitfox 5
Ok guys.  This will be a big project for me and I'd like to lay out my plan of attack for ya'll to review as I go.   I will be thankful for everyone's help so please don't hold back if you have an idea or advice
I also hope that this build thread will provide good info for anyone interested in the Yamaha power option.
The goal on this one is a functional and safely done repower and install.  But this is NOT going to be a "show plane", so looks, beauty, and bling are low on the priority list.
So I got my bird crammed into my garage yesterday, pulled the prop of the subaru and am getting ready to dig in.   Here's my initial game plan:
    1. Take lots of pics of the sooby and measure up location of prop flange to hopefully eliminate too much cowl rework in the end.
    2. Pull the motor and take a look at the soob motor mount.  I was considering building off it if possible to simplify the fabrication process.  Any concerns with that?
    3. Get things lined up, plan for airbox and exhaust, then tack together the new mount.  I am a novice welder and own only a cheapo wire feed welder.  I'd plan to emulate what others have already done and fishmouth the thing together and just tack it, then send it off to a pro to TIG it up and powdercoat.  (I'd be glad to hire out the entire mount fabrication but so far I'm the first guy I know of to put a Yamaha in a Kitfox, so it would presumably be hard for someone else to build me a mount without a KF5 firewall jig and a RX-1 motor laying around)  Any ideas / thoughts?

Ian (maker of this video) is a member here (ibange).  So hopefully he can chime in on this post.
He is also making up Yamaha Apex wire harnesses for people and supplies harnesses for Wild West Yamahas.
And yeah he must really love to tool around with things!  All those mods are cool but that is why I shopped for a KF5... so I can just have most of that already done and putting me closer to flying

I'll repost Steve Henry's  worksheet here below and should have mine weighed here in a few weeks to see how much I lost from the subaru.  Hoping for 40 or 50lbs.
