    My Raven Build
Well 22 hours later I arrived home with the first load of my new to me Raven project, I'm excited! The ad for this project did not do it justice to  say the least. Now the fun begins! Exactly 3 feet of overhang on the trailer. Mike

  2. ppilotmike added a post in a topic People selling "fat ultralights" with no paperwork

You make a very valid point. I have a friend who just went thru this with a Drifter. It had gained so much weight after it was built it was almost twice the legal limit. He did't really care because he only flew off of his own property. He recently knowingly sold it to an unwitting buyer on fleabay. I could never do something like that  but we all have different  moral values. The LSA market is almost as bad. I know of several people operating Luscombe 8A's that have been upgraded to E standards as if they were still in the LSA category.  Mike

  6. ppilotmike added a post in a topic The value of avid mk IV kit

I just bought a project, not in the same league as a MK4, but a project just the same for $4K. It does have a new grey head 582 with it. You can check out the pictures of what I got and compare what you are looking at in my thread "hope to pickup this project". Any way welcome to the forum and good luck with what ever you are looking at. Mike

Wohoo!! Well chapter 431 has decided to take my offer!!! Checks in the mail, now the fun part starts. I wonder how big of a trailer I need to drag this home with? I have entertained the idea of modding my little 5x8 for the job. Mike

Congratulations on your new airplane! I am still in the looking phase, can I ask how much you paid for it? I have missed out on a couple of projects so maybe I am not realistic on what I think I should pay for one. Thanks. Mike

I kind of have my heart set on an Avid or Kitfox. Thanks for keeping me in mind, I am sure something will happen sometime this year. Mike

Well the board did not except my offer last night. I left it open and told them that I was also looking at another project. A little bummed but all things happen for a reason. Mike

I had a similar incident happen many years ago in my Luscombe, the difference was mine limited elevator travel. Thank God for long runways and brakes. Glad everything worked out good for you. Mike

I made an offer of $4k dollars on the Raven/kitfox clone advertised on Barnstormers. It belongs to an EAA chapter so it has to be approved by their board. The fella I have been in communication with seems to think it will fly. Its an interesting mix of stuff. The engine is a 582 with pull start, gray head, and has dual ignition. The tanks that come with it are aluminum, theres two of them. The wings are built and they have the aluminum doublers installed at the hinge points for the controls. The gear is there including a new Matco tailwheel. Its pretty short on paper work or any history, he did tell me there is a roll of drawings that come with it. I am hoping this will be a rewarding project, finishing the build, licensing, and test flying when finished. I have never built an airplane. I have never worked with fabric other than when I got my A&P.  I am going to try an chronicle my build here hope I can do half as good a job as Tjay has. Mike

So what exactly is a Raven? I can't seem to find much info on them, other than some people trying to sell CDs of plans. What does "factory kit" mean? Was there a company that built the fuselages in a jig? The pictures they have posted look pretty good. Seems like kind of an interesting project. Mike

For the "EXPERIMENTAL" placard FAR 45.23B covers that. FAR 45.21 covers nationality markings. For more interesting reading I suggest you look at Advisory Circulars 45-2E and 45-4. 45-4 deals with markings mainly for S-LSA and E-LSA aircraft, but is well written and covers the same info that the A/C for larger aircraft does. Keep in mind A/C's are advisory in nature but are considered acceptable  to the administrator. Mike

I actually defused one in an ultralight that crashed at KPSP when I worked there. It was mechanically linked to a handle which basically fired a charge much like a shotgun shell. Once the firing arm was secure it was safe to handle. Mike

  22. ppilotmike added a post in a topic New here

Just a quick update on my status. I finally got a hold of the fella with the Bandit on Barnstormers. It is not a complete kit and he is the second owner. The fuselage is covered and one wing had been covered and this guy uncovered it due to crappy workmanship. To make matters worse, in my eyes, it is setup for a VW revmaster engine which he has. This one has been removed from my list $11K is a lot of money but I would have tried to work something out if it had been an untouched complete kit. I attended my local EAA chapter meeting as a guest last Saturday and have decided to join them, real nice group of guys with about 25% interested in the kind of flying I am. I really want a light weight 2stroke powered bird that I can keep in the garage during the winter months so I think I will wait and see what Jim decides. Mike

Two sad examples of what can happen to these planes have shown up on Barnstormers in the last 24hrs, both are too fat away for me. I kind of like the idea of buying a plane from one of the members here that has some experience with these so I will wait and see what develops. My bi-annual is not till mid May so I have some time before I could fly again anyway. Mike
