An "Aircraft Identification Data Plate" is the plate that the FAA and US Drug Enforcement Agency mandated back in the mid 1980s that duplicates some of an aircraft’s data plate information on the outside of the aircraft, allowing DEA agents to quickly identify aircraft. Is this additional data plate still required and can you cite the regulation requiring it?

    Answer
Yes, the external identification plate is still required. This is called out in 14 CFR 45.11(d), which states in pertinent part:

"The model designation and builder's serial number must be legible to a person on the ground and must be located either adjacent to and aft of the rear-most entrance door or on the fuselage near the tail surfaces. The model designation and builder's serial number must be displayed in such a manner that they are not likely to be defaced or removed during normal service."

This regulation applies to those aircraft manufactured before 7 March, 1988 that do not have their manufacturer data plate on the exterior of the aircraft.

Note that this external identification is not required to be on a fireproof plate. (The manufacturer data plate takes care of that requirement.) It only needs to be legible to a person on the ground and must be located as specified. Also, this identification should not be on an access door or cover, or anywhere where it would be removed or defaced during normal service. This external ID can be painted on, put on with a decal, or in any manner that is legible.

This requirement came out because customs wanted it years ago to ID an aircraft easily to catch drug runners. It is supposed to be near the entrance or door of the plane. Make, Model and S/N is all that is required if I remember. You can look up the reg and double check. Personally I always thought it  was usless because if you are a drug runner, all you have to do is find a plane of the same make and model and use their s/n...it was A STUPID knee jerk reaction....IF we get them back to the US , we get 10000 each.....sounds interesting but  too many bullets flyig around down there for me....

582 blue head or grey head?????
Document.rtfIm looking to buy a 582 for my KF2 project. Ive read the blue head is less prone to cold seizure due to an improved coolant system, but the only one I can find is a new one for $5600 less gearbox and starter but has exhaust and carbs...from CPS.
The other option is grey head. There are several used for sale on barnstormers.. One for 3000 with no carbs, starter, gearbox or exhaust, but overhauled.
I have a gearbox and a starter, but the only carbs I have are 2 503 carb that would have to be rejeted for ab0ut $160 for both. I can keep looking just not sure if I should hold out for the blue head. It is that much better engine>??
    Thanks for any advice.... Mark

  8. zadwit added a post in a topic any ski drawing out there?

The repair to the two wing rib tails goes forward under the fabric up into the wing and seems pretty ridgid so maybe I should just leave it alone. Its been flying that way for 700 hrs....

  13. zadwit added a post in a topic Recoating the 582 Exhaust

I sent a earthstar gull 2000 muffler (pusher 503 engine) to Jet Hot Coatings in Oklahoma CIty, OK. They ceramic coat the muffler, header pipe and the small 90 degree joint that goes between the two. They told me after the coat it, the put the parts in a tumbler and that is what give it that shiny chrome look. It took several weeks to have to done.
The coating is only good to 1200 degrees but I think that must be OK because I have never seen it burn off.
VHT or other high heat paint will work, but it eventually flakes off because you cant put a primer on it but it will work...

  14. zadwit added a post in a topic Transponders and Airworthiness inspections

As an FAA inspector  in Alaska I would let the 135 operators fly with a transponder that was due the biennial check. If they had an MEL, they could defer it .. I would not take it out. IN a real emergeny you could turn it on and kit ident 7700 and paint the controllers scope where you are if you need that....
You just cant use the transponder so you cant fly in airspace that requires the transponder.....
The encoder and transponder check is to make sure it is transmitting the correct code and altitude info. even with a tight static system I have seen them off 100 feet. YOu can call the controller and while flying along ask himm what altitude he is showing you at . The avionics guy will check the transponder and encoder and sometimes they adjust the encoder a little bit but rarely the transponder....
The regs say "when you use it.........that is the key...if you use it, it has to have been checked in the last 24 months......
Thats the way I see it.
I have even had FAA legal agree with me....
They are good to have even it you dont talk to anyone because it makes you visible to other faster planes.....

how to convert a boat trailer to haul a KF
I would like to get some kind of  boat trailer and convert it so I can haul my KF to the airport when I want to fly.  The  airport is only 1.5 miles  away.....Ive seen these kinds of trailer where the MLG wheels are close to the ground with a small ramp and the tail wheel is winched up a channel towards t he tongue of the trailer..... Is there anything in particular I should look for.  Ill have to cut and weld to make  this work I suppose. Just looking for ideas.....ALso didnt there used to be some kind of hitch that pined to the back of the tail wheel  and fuselage and then you just pull the plane slowly to the airport with a ball hitch????Thanks, Mark Smith

want to install HKS700E int Kitfox IV
I want to install HKS 700E into my Kitfox IV. Its a 1999 Skystar Classic IV with a 503 and 154hr total  time. I have most everything I need except the engine mount and Green skys is reluctant to build just a mount......He has not said no and I would pay extra if he will do it... I could make a mount but for me it would be trial and error and I dont want to get into that...., HKS engine, then I guess Ill look at buying a factory new 582 and go that route... I can run a 2 stroke. I just  like  the HKS, it starts so easy, idles nice, I know it is not as powerful as a 582 or bigger but  I just want to fly around, no bush flying, done all I need for 5 life times in Alaska. Anyone has any idea how  I buy an HKS engine mount?????new, used, off a wreck maybe??????willingto pay top dollar$$$$

    The life of a Pilot
Subject: FW: I get this email every so often and it never ceases to make me laugh...

Once upon a time a pilot found a beautiful princess and asked her,

    "Will you marry me?"
    The princess said, "No!"

And the pilot lived happily ever after and flew jets all over the world and drove hot cars and chased skinny long-legged big-breasted flight attendants and hunted and fished and went to topless bars and dated women half his age and drank Weihenstephaner German beer and never heard bitching and never paid child support or alimony and kept his house and guns and ate cold leftover meals, potato chips and beans and blew enormous farts and never got cheated on while he was at work and all his friends and family thought he was frickin' cool as hell and he had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up........
    The end.

  19. zadwit added a post in a topic Elevator trim tab safety

another way to  prevent this  is put a mass balance weight on the tab to balance it 100%. IE with the tab control disconnected, the tab should just  ride along. Other wise is can be a dangerous situation.. IT caused  many a crash on the beech craft Bonaze Vee tail because the 1/16" trim tab cables would rust and fail allowing the elevator to flutter causing  the stablizer to  flex wildly up and down and few times and rip off. It is nothing to mess with. I f you look  at teh Dehavilland HC2 Beaver, they have the mass balance weight on the ailerons.
The Taylorcraft L-2 has it as well on the elevator tab. Most Cessna 120, 140, 170, 172 dont need it because a cable chain drived a gear box that has a push rod that goes to the elevator tab.

    1999 kitfox IV engine change
What parts do I need to remove my Rotax 503 air cooled and install a Rotax 582 liquid cooled engine? Can I reuse my engine mount?
Where do I get a radiator, the hoses and parts and pieces to install a new 582. I think I will buy a new 582, any suggestions where to buy one???
My 503 has 154 hours sine new and about 2 hours since decarbon so after I get the 582installed, Ill sell the 503 I think...Any comments or suggestions welcome please!!!

  23. zadwit added a post in a topic Need some gear measurements

When I talked to Dean Wilson a few months ago about placement of the axle centerline on a tail dragger he had some interesting info.
He said when the JN4 Jenny first came out, it had no brakes and on tail wheel, only a tail skid so the axle center line was placed real close to the loaded flying CG. This worked fine until brakes were installed then the planes started getting nosed over so the axle centerline was moved forward. He told me about the 12 degree angle. IF you level the plane, drop a plumb bob thru the CG on the wing and then measure off that vertical line forward 12 degrees is about all you want . More than that makes the plane hard to control on the ground.
A lot less and you are prone to nose over... There has to be  a happy medium especially if operating on skis, plus wouldnt it be nice if you had more precise control on takeoff without the damn plane trying to Eat you all the time?????!!?

On the Ridge Runner 1 the axles centerline is so far forward of the all up loaded CG that if you try to lift the tail on takeoff,it will try to eat you!!!! and had eaten many a test pilot......
