  1. Ed,

The wind got bad for about an hour here.  Late enough in the evening that I just stayed curled up with my dog and listened to it blow, until I went to sleep.

  2. I've got one of my guys shut down in Laramie due to your wonderful spring winds & icy roads today.  I heard that you were getting gusts that are faster than our little birds fly.

  3. I have been asked to make a set of reinforcing plate for a "B" model Avid.  Having recently read the article in Experimenter Magazine about butterfly gussets I am wondering what is the best method of reinforcing our birds in the seat truss and cockpit side frame areas.  I have seen pictures of "AK bush tank plates" to extremely lightened and centered on the tubes. Never seen butterfly gussets used on them.  I think their big disadvantage is the amount of time bending them to shape.  What do you all think?  I am intentionally inviting debate to speed my learning process and avoid mistakes.

PS i am still in need of patterns to cut the braces.  I don't want to rely on my fuselages for patterns since both of them have been tweaked enough that the straight edge shows bent tubes.

  4. Doug And Leni,

Thanks in advance for the help getting the templates.  I am looking forward to being able to contribute to our community.

I also have a router attachment for my CNC table that I have not played with yet. (looking forward to messing with it just have to figure out how I want to do my vacuum base)

  5. Interesting pics.  For me to do a set for KFs I would have to have templates or drawings and someone to test fit them as I don't have a KF air-frame (be a good place for EDMO to volunteer since he is close to me)

  6. Wyatt,

I am still around.  Been spending my computer time researching on Yamaha engine conversions for our birds.(subject for another thread)  I am going to be adding fuselage reinforcements to both of my Avids.  If anyone wants to be able to get these as a set premade with the lightening holes already cut let me know.  I have a CNC table and will be measuring / test fitting on both my fuselages as I develop them.  Now the first of my questions what do you feel is the best thickness for the gussets? Second question Is there a specific spot where you have seen the most failures? I.E more strength needed here.

    Thanks,

    Dave in Western IL

  8. Leni,

My PayPal account has been not sending things part of the time.  Fortunately not pulling the funds either just losing the transactions.  Please verify that my pennies made it to you.

    Thank you,

  9. My Avid is a C model with an EA-81 out front.  The current cowl / radiator is a heavy draggy, ugly disaster.

Having searched the forum without much luck finding current information.  I remember a post about someone selling their molds and getting out of the business, but now I can't find the thread.   I am looking for someone who is making / selling cowls, as I would prefer not to go through the whole mold making process if possible.

  10. Ed from the first couple of bisections of one of the broken longeron tubes I had rust in the rear most four inches of them.  Which is better news than what I was expecting.  But is not enough verification that I will trust the rest of the tubes without further testing.  Like your idea of taking a fuse that was bent up front and using the back half.  If someone on here has one they are willing to part with please MSG me.

Now I need to get back in to reading my builders manual.

  11. Thank you for the pictures everyone. While I think I will end up having to carefully think it through and pull out a couple of my old engineering textbooks I think I can make it work. I will take notes may even build a jig (Might be the first piece towards a new Avid company)

  12. I am searching for information, diagrams, measurements, pictures, ectera on stretching a Model C fuselage.  I have the Soob EA-81 out front and while trailering the bird home after purchase the tail-wheel mount was destroyed.
