Fred Stork put a throttle like that on his left side, at the seat frame. Looks great and he loves it.

  4. nlappos added a post in a topic Carb ice on a Stratus Soob with Bing carbs

The cooling that makes the ice comes from the evaporating gasoline and the venturi effect of the carb where the extra speed of the air drops its pressure and therefore its temperature (like a spray can does), so Jim's chart is dead on. BUT, the whole bulk of literature on carb ice comes from really light, air cooled aviation engines with carbs hung in space away from the block. If you have a car engine, the carb might very well be bolted closely to the block, and getting lots of heat from it. That's because the emissions of a car are dropped when the air is warmer and the gas evaporates completely. Cars don't care for a few percent power loss compared to a nice emissions improvement.. Also, the air intake on a car engine arrangement might warm the input air as SuperAvid describes.

Each new plateau of risk, when first attained, seems to be the last; but, as we grow accustomed to it, a new horizon beckons. What insulates us from fear as we approach the danger is simply habit, the familiarity of a point we have reached and all the points we’ve left behind. Until one steps too far, it’s often hard to tell the difference between recklessness and skill

Av8r is right on. Finding a nice static port location is a pain in the neck, and would take a small test program with a lot of holes to find a good spot, and likely a pair of spots that cancel their errors in small sideslips.

  13. nlappos added a post in a topic Mounting Aero Classic Tundras

The Matco site recommends squeezing the tire nearly flat, with the tube inside, using large clamps. Then slip half the wheel on, set the tube's inflation tube in place, then slip the other wheel half onto it. Big trick is not pinching the tube. As EDMO says, lube helps. Here is the Matco service bulletin (http://static.veracart.com/matco/item_pdfs/3734/document1.pdf), I used it on smaller tires and it helped a lot. Not sure about bigger tires, though!

  15. nlappos added a post in a topic Extended Speed Wing with short flaperon location

The roll control is a factor of both the difference in wing lift created by the flaperons, and the distance from the CG of the aircraft that the lift is applied. Even without much washout, the inboard flapewrons will generate only 1/3 to 1/2 the control capability of the same length of flaperon put on the outboard section of the wing. It is basically a leverage thing.

  18. nlappos added a post in a topic condition inspection

I pay an A&P from a local training school $150 plus tip, and do the Avid inspection checklist ahead of time and show it to him. I opened it all up as well. He comes In knee pads and give it a full look over. The first year he had a short list of peeves like too few threads showing above nuts and such. The next year I showed him the cleaned up items. Takes 1.5 hours and presto, a signed inspection!

  19. nlappos added a post in a topic Want to buy

    Jared Payne,
I have an Avid Mk IV and two years ago went through the same search that you have started. I learned a few things:
    1) The max gross weight of every Avid and early Kit Foxes is a jump ball. Ask what it is, and also get the empty weight. The difference between empty weight and MGW is useful load, and that is what you are buying.
2)There is a serial number chart on this site that ID's every Avid as to type (A, B, C, Mark IV),  but of course the builders did what builders do and made them unique. That serial number chart is still a good guide.
    3) For an Avid Mark IV with a Rotax 582, the empty weight is probably about 550 to 600 lbs. The MGW is 1150, so you have at least 550 to 600 lbs of useful load. That is terrific and beats most Cubs! And the going price for a Mark IV with  a low time 582 is much less than $20 k these days, some perhaps $14 or 15K. I zeroed in on that airplane and haven't regretted it for a second.
    4) For an Avid with other engines, especially car engines, expect the empty weight to be far higher, so the useful load is crowded quite a bit. It is possible to find Avid Mk IVs that cannot carry two big-ish men. (This comment will get the most eye rolls I bet!)
    5) Some folks insist that 2 strokes do not belong in airplanes, but lots of folks fly them every day and love them. Folks like me.
    6) Inspecting an Avid is cake, the whole thing is simple and easily inspected. The controls are quality rods and bearings, and the fuselage is factory welded steel. They are strong as dirt, designed for about 4 G's so they are equal to most of Wichita's finest.
    7) For some reason, some people price Kitfoxs at 50% or 100% higher than Avids. I don't know why, but it just makes it easier to grab an Avid off Barnstormers and smile!
    8) I have flown about 80 different flying machines, was a professional pilot for about 40 years, and I have as much fun in my Avid as in any other machine. It is honest, handles sweetly and can be flown with finger tips. Just use your feet on landing, because it will try to make you look bad on rollout if you don't know how to dance.
    9) This group is great, there are a lot of smart folks who like to share, and they helped me a bunch.

    EDMO,
Thanks for the info, I didn't know but would have found out!  The pins all look good externally, but the bird is 23 years old so it's worth a peek.

Great idea! About to need it as I pull and inspect each of my elevator and rudder pins, thanks! We used to call them "drift pins" or "fids" once upon a time.

  23. nlappos added a post in a topic Need a replacement gas strut but...

McMaster Carr is a great company and they have a strut for every application. Beware that you get the length right, I bet each of our doors has a different strut length, but the catalog lets you pick a strut at almost any length. I bought a pair of struts with a part number that was posted, and they are about 1" too long for me, but McMaster Carr will take them back and refund, which shows that they are a good house. The right length are on their way to me right now.
Go to the add a fitting page:  https://www.mcmaster.com/#gas-struts/=18kvqga     Don't forget to add the fitting length to get the total length
