Larry,I had the same problem on my dragster,it has Wilwood brakes with 1/8 inch pipe thread and I could not get one of them to quit leaking.A race buddy of mine told me to use Loctite 545,I did and it hasnt leaked since. If that doesnt cure it then it may be cracked in the tapered pipe thread.Randy

Leni, Im glad you had enough altitude and kept your cool,so many accidents are incidents like yours and the pilots dont keep them selves calm enough to finish out the ride with the desired outcome.Sounds like your girl friend kept it together also, good job. Randy

I have a couple friends whom are quality pilots that cant fly because of minor medical issues but they let this dickhead fly a high performance airplane.Hopefully they will ground him for a long time.

Here in Idaho gas is around 3.40 and diesel is 4.10, 100 low lead is still 4.25 at our airport but Im sure it will be way higher when they fill the tank back up.The price of crude has went down a little but pump prices keep going up,so much for that theory.I guess we should just all buy stock in vaseline and bend over.

Mine is a Super Skyraider,It has a 1050 gross. It pretty much has the same wing as the older Kitfox and Avids, only they use regular flaps and ailerons. They have been around since the mid 90's but the Super has only been out about 4 years. If you go to Skyraider LLC it will give you their specs.Hopefully it will perform about the same as the Avids and Foxes.Im getting kind of excited about it now,I just got my tailwheel endorsement flying a Piper Vagabond so I will see what happens. My instructor also has a single place Skyraider so he can help me out a bunch. It was entertaining to watch me when I first started but finally got the hang of it.Thanks Randy

I was kind of wondering about that,I had plenty and I ended up raising my engine a 1/4 inch so it made it a little closer than I wanted.I'll watch it close when I static run it and trim more off if need be.Thanks, that is why this forum is so valuable. Randy

    Maybe Spring
Getting a little closer on the old Skyraider build, have to paint a couple more things and do some rigging and probably a million other things but shes getting closer.Hoping for a DAR inspection by mid April, and maybe in the air shortly after. Randy

  9. horsepower added a post in a topic request performance information

Was curios if your plane performs about like these specs or did they inflate the performance like everyone else does now days? I wish the prices were the same,I would buy everyone they could make, they even included the engine. Its cool looking at some of the old prices,we sell 25 horse outboards for more than what the 70 horse used to be.Wish our wages went up like prices do.Cool old brochures Leni. Not for sure but I think it was just an early version of the Avid Magnum,I believe you could put an 0-320 in them.Should be able to call Airdale and get the history behind it even though it was owned by someone else.Randy

  13. horsepower added a post in a topic Where'd everyone go?

Wish I was flying, instead Im pulling my header tank back out and fixing a fuel leak.My brand new stainless header tank leaked gas from one of the welds and went into my fuse so I was not a happy camper.Pressure tested it with soapy water before I put it in but must have missed one.Got the gas cleaned up and everything seems ok.I tig welded both ends and pressure tested again.Three times to be exact and its ok now.Called the factory just to let them know and they said they were sorry so now everything is just peachy.Oh well one step foward and two steps back. Hope everyone else is flying. Randy

  14. horsepower added a post in a topic Mag Check

I found problem, broken trigger wire at bullit connector. It was still connected by the outer sheathing but was broken clear off on the inside.I put a new connector on and put shrink tubing over the whole connector so it should be fine.Gets spark now on both mags,Im still going to change the plug gap to .016 and start from there.Seems like they would have a special tight gap plug so the plug strap wouldnt be at such an angle. You really have to bend her down to get the gap you need. Thanks Randy

  15. horsepower added a post in a topic Snowmobiles

I kind of got out of the loop on the snowmobiles but I know alot of the Snowcatters around here like the direct injection 2 strokes. Its the best of both worlds. They say they are more reliable than the 4 strokes and just as efficent. No smoke, easy start up and haul ass to boot.I sell Nissan outboard motors and their big motors are direct injected 2 strokes and have been bullit proof.Even though they burn oil its just as cheap as a 4 stroke as you have to change crankcase oil on a steady basis so the cost is almost a wash. The fuel is injected straight into the cylinder head like a four stroke, only the oil is injcted in the crankcase so you have a very clean burn. But on the other hand there is a lot of good 4 stroke machines out there also. The Alaska boys would probably know exactlly what would work best for your application. I set them at .020,thats what the guy had written on the heads. That sure seems tight most outboards I work on are .040 I have company this weekend but after they are gone I'll do some testing on the triggers and CD boxes. Thanks Randy

I did use resistor style spark plugs and also have the 5000ohm caps, can you use these together or is this maybe where I screwed up. Thats the first thing that Im going to check tomorrow.

    Mag Check
I started my 582 for the first time today on my Skyraider build. It fired right up and seemed to run good, only idled it. It will run when the switch is on "both"or "left" but when I pass through the "right" pole it kills the engine. So if I do a mag check it dies out on the right.Do you have to have it at a higher RPM, I was only about 1500.Didnt have the prop on so I didnt want to rev any higher.Checked the switch with a ohm meter and its all good.Didnt really want to check anything else until I talked to someone who knows these ignition systems. This is my first Rotax 2 stroke so dont want to screw something up.They must have two triggers for a dual ignition but dont know that.Any help would be appreciated.I may be ducking before anyone is swinging. Thats Randy

  20. horsepower added a post in a topic Start up without prop

Thats kinda what I was thinking, I just want to run it and check for leaks ,etc.I mentioned that I was going to start my engine without a prop to one of our local pilots and he just about ripped my head off.I,ll keep the revs low and no abrupt throttle changes. Thanks Bob

    Start up without prop
I was always told to never start an engine without a prop which I can understand but if you start a 582 with a C gearbox and keep the idle down below 2500 wouldnt that be the same as having a clutch in your gearbox? It would help me out so I could run my engine in the shop and just check some things out.I would like to get a clutch setup if anybody has one for sale. Thanks Randy

  22. horsepower added a post in a topic Hand lever brakes

I was kind of wondering the same thing,it seems natural to me.Ive driven dragsters with hand brakes and I like them but was wondering what you would do if you needed differential braking or to use them for sharp turning.I would also consider a hand brake if they would work well on a tail dragger.

I'd be there except my planes not done,my business is slow and my tail wheel expertise has yet to be established. One or two more lessons and I'll be getting close to my tail wheel endorsement. As far as mountain flying goes well Ive yet to master a 4000 ft paved strip but someday I,ll be visiting you Alaska boys. When I do I,ll be there with bells on.
