  3. horsepower added a post in a topic HKS 700E performance

Ive talked to guys that have the HKS 700 in Skyraiders and they like um.They dont climbout like a 582 but cruise is about the same, burns half the fuel.In powered parachutes I heard they dont perform near as good.Contact Greensky Adventures, they replaced a 582 with a HKS in a older Kitfox and were happy with the final results.Took awhile to get it propped right but after that it did good.Randy

  6. horsepower added a post in a topic Someone near DC to help transition?

David,I had some of the same problems your talking about. The ground handling will probably be better when your solo because it will take off much shorter, but dont do it until your truly ready.I did the crow hops on a grass strip and almost crashed my plane, you just dont have the time to get them set up properly for a landing. My Skyraider was a handful at first and I thought something was wrong,I have to give it a ton of left rudder on takeoff just to keep it climbing out straight and pretty much lead with rudder going into a turn.I do a 3 point landing and Im on the pedals instantly with just a little toggle back and forth.Ive got to the stage of landing without embarrasing myself.Dont give up,just stay on top of it.I did my tailwheel training in a Piper Vagabond and my instructor told me that if my feet wasnt moving when I landed that I was in the first stage of a groundloop.I was all scared and nervous after that but its starting to all come together.I agree with AV8er hold off on the little crow hops,at least in my experience with them.Good Luck Randy

  7. horsepower added a post in a topic That hits the Spot

Joey ( C5 Engineer) has one and uses it alot. When he comes up to Idaho he post it on the internet so you can watch his progress.I think Im going to get one after watching him use his.He flies a lot of hostile territory as does the Alaska guys and if you went down your probably going to get picked up a lot faster with a SPOT than a ELT 450.Randy

  8. horsepower added a post in a topic Spar tube / carry through not centered

I believe my Skyraider is like that,Its in storage right now but I will look next time Im out at my shop.I think it is so you dont have to notch as much out of spar for the wing fold.Dont go by what I say though because the factory had already done mine.Randy

Nice,I must have been good to because Santa brought me one also.I got the HD170 Stealth, which is the model before yours.I havent hooked it up yet as my plane is in storage for the winter but look foward to using it.It came with the external mic, extra battery, and the patch cord for the intercom.Probably have to have my kids or grand kids hook it up for me.Keep the Vids coming. 10. horsepower added a post in a topic Correct grit to sand spars for rib bonding

Not sure what grit It was but I used a fine emery cloth,I layed out where all the ribs were to be attached and then cut a piece of emery long enough to wrap clear around spar and worked it back and forth a few times.Probably 10 to 20 seconds on each location and thats about all it took to scuff them up and clean the oxidation off.

I used 220 on my Skyraider, careful on the sides of cap strips or you will end up with a hell of a splinter in your hand. Randy

  12. horsepower added a post in a topic Flt rigging

My Skyraider has pretty much the same wing as a Kitfox 3 only with flaps instead of flaperons. It has a 582 so it torques to the right.I have about 7 hours on it now and Im just starting to get used to the P factor and everything else that goes with these light airplanes.I noticed on my plane that if I lead with rudder and then feed in aileron it is much more of a coordinated turn.If you bank into a turn with aileron first and then try to center the ball you end up into a steep bank. You definately feel it in your butt when its not right,I dont watch the ball near as much and that seems to help also.Im not a high time pilot so someone else can chime in on this one.Good Luck. 14. horsepower added a post in a topic To the lurkers

I know I was fortunate as hell to come across this forum when I first bought my Skyraider kit. There is a ton of knowlege and first hand experience out there and it sure is nice to share that with new builders.Heres a pic of my plane at a grass strip up in N. Idaho,Theres always a bit of crosswind so its a little intimidating for tailwheel greenhorns such as myself but Im hanging in there.Randy

    582 Cruise RPMs
Was wondering what most of you cruise at for RPMs with your 582. Ive got 6.5 hours on my Skyraider now and if the weather holds true for the weekend I want to venture out of the pattern aways. The wind has been blowing so much around here lately that I dont want to get to far from the airport. At full throttle on climb its a tad over 6500 so would 5800 be a comfortable cruise rpm?Thinking about putting a little more pitch in my prop, the climb is unreal, these things are little hotrods, just have to get used to them. 16. horsepower added a post in a topic First flight

Hi Herman,Glad to see you got it back in the air, does it outperform the Jab? My 582 starts getting rough alittle below 2100,make sure and dont let it rattle and shack on a steady diet because its hard on the gearbox.I had to sync my carbs to get mine to idle right, wish I had a clutch but maybe next year.I have my idle screws backed out one turn and my needle is in the 3rd position from the top.Ive been running 162 main jets through the fall but just put in 165,s but havent tried it with them.Daytime temps are in mid twenties now so had to fatten her up.My EGTs have been running around 1120 give or take, our field elevation is 2120,what is yours? 170 mains seem like alot to have that high of exhaust temps, maybe you are at sea level dont know but 1150 is good according to all the Rotax guys.Im flying mine this weekend if all goes right so I'll let you know what it does with 165,s.Randy

  17. horsepower added a post in a topic How to wait......

It took me about 4 months to get my Skyraider but they shipped me what they had finished and then sent me the rest in several shipments.I picked the wings and fuse up in Caldwell Idaho and they shipped the rest.I heard that Ridgerunner has a good reputation so I dont think you will get burned,I would however demand shipment on what they do have finished just in case.I have the 3 blade Powerfin and it works well, my brother in law has one on his 503 and it works good also, his is a 2 blade.Good luck on your kit I think you will be fine, its just scary when you get excuses and you already forked out the money. Go Pro or Contour
If Santa was to bring me a video camera this year which one would be the better choice? I know some of you use Go Pro but as fast as technoligy changes I thought there may be a better choice.I see they are under 300 bucks but dont have a clue what to look for. Thanks Randy

    Skyraider Performance
I have around 7 hours now on my Skyraider,Just curious if you guys have to put a ton of left rudder on takeoff.I know that the 582 is all the power you would want with it.I have mostly just flown around the pattern, at 5800 RPM,s I indicate about 82 MPH.The yaw is real sensitive but I think most of it is me.I have only done 3 point landings and will do so for awhile.Starting to have fun now,at first it was real nerve racking,my landings are not embarrasing all the time now and once in awhile I'll half assed grease one. Will send pics when I can let go of the stick long enough to click one off. 22. horsepower added a post in a topic Blue Angels and Bearcats

Pretty cool stuff,my old CFI used to fly Bearcats, some of the stories were mind boggling. He said there was nothing like the sound of a 14 ft. prop when you put it in a dive.He later flew jets and still liked the old Bearcat. Thanks for the neat video. Randy

I remember seeing a Grand Rapids EIS 2000 awhile back on Barnstormers.Dont know if its still there but a good place to start.Thats what I have in my Skyraider, its got a lot of info.I didnt get the fuel flow sensor but got pretty much everything else.I even got the outside air temp, that way you will know how bad your going to freeze your ass off if you have to set her down.Heres a pic of mine when I was building.Randy
