  1. horsepower added a post in a topic Gas caps

I used JB weld on my vent tubes, they are vented caps and have a little pin hole on top,I drilled through that hole but not clear thru the whole cap.Thats what Skyraider told me to do. You are still using the vent in the cap with just an extension of the vent hole.I have seen others with the tube clear thru the cap and they told me not to do that. When you turn my caps upside down you don't see the tube on the inside.Randy

Herman,I heard Skyraider has the Frontier for sale that is pictured on website,it has a 0-290 Lycoming in it and it has the big luggage compartment. It does have the undercamber wing like the Highlander but should cruise in the 105 range.I saw it when I was at the factory and is real nice, not my favorite color but not too bad.May be worth calling on.Randy

I own a business and am sick of paying in all the quarterly taxes and all the other crap you have to pay so we can supply another welfare card to someone who has figured out the system. Not saying all are doing it but when its this easy to do many more are going to join the crowd.Really cant figure out WTF happened and how more than half of our Country doesnt care anymore.Just hope our States can keep the right people in there to fight for the locals. I may be F****D .Randy

  10. horsepower added a post in a topic fuel line through the firewall

I was going to run all the FAA approved billion dollar fuel lines but a buddy mechanic of mine said unless your going to run avgas or non ethanal premium all the time to not use the FAA hose.He said if you are running the plain ole premium it can contain up to 10 percent of the crap and thats enough to dry out the rubber that is in the hose.I just run the blue silicone hose from CPS and plan on changing it every other year.Never thought of the garden hose, then you could just have a hose bib for a shutoff on each tank.Randy

Not sure it would be an issue, they seem to change shape alittle when full of fuel, check with the tank manufacturer and see what he says.Randy

I think Leni uses that set up,he just got married so he may be a little preoccupied.Im sure when he returns he'll fill you in on how it operates. Some guys use the HAC set up but I think they are different, not sure they still build the Arctic Sparrow,if they do I would also be interested in one.Randy

  15. horsepower added a post in a topic 582 guys how long are your muffler standoffs?

I use the clamps also Joey and they work good, put antiseize where the two flanges meet and dont overtighten the clamps and they work great. They are a little spendy though. Randy

  16. horsepower added a post in a topic tail up

This is why I like this forum Brian, there is no scolding, you might get a ribbing or two but its all in fun.My tail wheel instructor taught me in a Piper Vagabond which is a short little wheel based plane. He also has a Skyraider which is a lot like an Avid or early Kitfox so he told me what to expect when I soloed my Skyraider.I wouldnt taxi at anything above 15 with my plane unless I had plans for a takeoff.I did do some long crowhops which is hard for me to do because it doesnt give you time to set your landing up.The best way I could recomeened is pick a dead calm day early in the morning and fly the airplane in the pattern until it feels right for the landing.I had to go around three times before I could get my speed of 60 established for my final approach. When I did finally get it set up it just felt right and then everything came together.Sounds like you will do fine, most people would probably have groundlooped on a highspeed taxi in one of these little guys.It would be nice if you could find someone in your area to help with your first flight, needs to be someone experienced in these type of airplanes.I have lots of drag racing experience and thought it would help me with tailwheel stuff but I was way off on that theory. Its a technic that has to be devolped and that just comes from practice.Good Luck Randy

  17. horsepower added a post in a topic Wire feed welding

You can use a wire feed, that is what the factory uses.Tig would be the best but would take forever to weld a fuse together.I had some scrap chrome moly tubing that I practiced on and did ok when I needed to weld something on my plane.Just short on and off burst with the trigger gave me the best results.I used a little Lincoln 110 with Stargon gas and .025 wire.Practice makes perfect.Randy

  19. horsepower added a post in a topic overheating... again

Leni,Sorry to hear about your ordeal but glad your ok.You probably already thought of this but a radiator cap failure can also have the same symptoms as a head gasket.Maybe blowing off pressure before its designed for.Probably a head gasket but you might take a new cap with you when you go back in to get it. Good Luck Randy

  20. horsepower added a post in a topic Sky Raider 1

Bandit,You will like flying the Skyraider, they are a lot like the early Kitfoxes and Avids but a little more sporty in the air.Sitting in the middle of the airplane makes it more fitting for me.Ihave a Super Skyraider with a 582 and they are real performers. My Brother-In-Law has a Skyraider 1 with a 503 dual carb and its also a kick to fly.You may be able to trade your 582 for a low time 503,maybe contact Rotax Rick.Let me know if you have any build questions, Id be glad to help.Randy

  22. horsepower added a post in a topic MANUVERING SPEEDS

The manuvering speed changes with different condtions such as weight and turbulence, dont really know how to determine manuvering speed on a light weight homebuilt but if your wings fall off I guess it was overstressed.I was taught that a fully loaded airplane had a reduced manuvering speed when in turbulent air as opposed to a lighter loaded plane.I may be wrong, wouldnt be the first time.Randy

I believe he,s a cropduster over in the Palouse area near Colfax and Tekoa. Its only about a 20 minute flight from here, alot of AG planes flying around so I usually stay away from there during spray season. Its a neat video with some cool music.Randy
