Joey, You can always cover them later and that way you will know if you picked up any extra speed or climb. Randy

Joey, California has lots of beautiful country, most people think of it as nothing but skyscrapers and housing developments.Which it does have plenty of them also.I know the area your pics are at real well as I was born in Ashland, Oregon just over the border.Lots of hunting and fishing in that area, pics bring back good old memories.Randy

  6. horsepower added a post in a topic Buying my new Avid

Here in the U.S after the D.A.R. inspects your airplane and everything passes then he will give you an area near your airport that you can fly. This is usually a 40 hour time frame and during that time you are not allowed to take a passenger.I guess they figure it will take 40 hours to get the bugs worked out of it.I guess its a good thing but 40 hours does seem excessive.Good Luck with your new toy. Gearbox Clutch
Any of you guys run a clutch on your C gearbox? Sounds like a good thing other than trying to prop start but dont know a thing about them.I dont really have an extra 500.00 to throw away but if it is something that a guy should get then now would be the time to do it as I dont have my engine permanently mounted yet. Thanks Randy

I am currently covering my Skyraider using the Stewart Systems. It is a pleasure using it as Im covering my plane at my shop where I work and I dont have much ventalation. There are no harsh chemicals and practically no smell.I have both wings finished and starting on the fuselage.Call Stewarts and get the 6 DVD and you wont have any problems. It is applied like no other so its important that you follow their method as descibed. They are very helpful if you need assistance. Thanks for that article, sometimes its the simple things that make the most sense.I like how he wraps it together with the couple long strands to hold everything in place.I have tons of wiring left so I'll give it a whirl. Randy

  13. horsepower added a post in a topic Need help finding a part

Spruces website kinda of sucks to find light sport stuff in, but its in their 2009 catalog on page 307. The part number is 10-01557. Its 5/16 studs on both ends but its only 3/4 inch long so maybe that is not the one you need.If you type in the part number in their search box it will come up.

Joey are you sure the stud is not a 5/16 and takes a 1/2 inch wrench or is it a 1/2 inch diameter stud?If you go to the Lord website they have just about every mount you can imagine.Aircraft Spruce may have it or Wicks, good luck.

  17. horsepower added a post in a topic VW engine in an Avid/Fox

I think I would consider contacting Preceptor Aircraft, they use the VW in most of their aircraft. The advertised performance isnt to shabby.Im building a Super Skyraider and really considered the VW but went with the 582 instead. The Preceptor Super Pup has an empty weight of 450 and a gross of 1050.You have probably already researched it but just incase you havent it may be worth your while.Randy

  18. horsepower added a post in a topic VW engine in an Avid/Fox

I agree Joey,I did a lot of research before choosing the 582 and it gets right down to power/weight ratio. The VW I believe is a good engine but they are more suited to a faster less dragier type of plane like a Sonex. The size of the prop has its limitations because of the direct drive and the RPMs it turns.I was told a good running 503 will out perform a VW and 912s are totally ridicoulas now.If I were rich I would have a 912 but one has to settle for something practicle or we may as well all be flying certified aircraft.Im hoping my 582 will be safe and I spent extra for some decent gauges to keep it in its operating ranges. If it does quit me I guess I,ll say damn I wished I would have bought a 912. Wiring
Not sure why Im even asking this as Im half way finished, but Im wiring my airplane now and I have been soldering and shrink tubing all the connections.Someone told me that I should be using electrical connectors and use a good pair of crimpers.I have always soldered all the electrical connections on my dragster and have never had any problems, I cant imagine my airplane shaking more than my car.I guess old school isnt always the best. Are any of you guys wiring gurus? Engine Mounts
I have a question on engine mount movement,I have a upright 582 mounted on a plate with 4 rubber mounts. It sure seems like there is a lot of movement when I grab a hold of gearbox and move up and down.Is this normal or are the mounts shot? They are used but look to be in good shape.I have never owned a 2 stroke so maybe they are fine.I never measured but I bet I can move the prop hub 1/2 inch or so.Seems like it would be flopping around like a rag doll when you powered up, Im aways off from starting it but guess I will find out. Thanks Randy

10/4 on that, the prop is a 68 inch Powerfin with the F blades. They just relocated to Texas from Spokane, Wa.believe they are back in business now.

Yes I have had some time to work on it.Most of our business is boats, we do automotive and race car stuff in winter but nobody has any money this year so looks like I wont have any excuses for not working on it.The rod running back from the throttle is for the rear throttle control, its actually one of my aluminum arrows was just going to use it to dummy up but works pretty good.May as well use them on my plane as I cant seem to hit an elk with them.
