Thanks Jim, I have been  keeping up with items throughout the year so was glad it wasn't a worse pounding than it was. After looking at what he changed in the firewall area I am guessing you cannot attach cable/ hoses etc directly to motor mounts. The places I had secured with cable ties directly were resecured in the same area however he wrapped a cable tie around the mount and secured the cable etc to the cable tie on the motor mount with a second cable tie. I gues that is a way to circumvent the letter if not the intent of the law. I will be better armed next year

    condition inspection
Ok guys I just got my Avid back from the first condition inspection its been through since I bought it last sept. All of the items I was worried about were a non issue and outside of a rad flush and cleaning up some very minor engine compartment items nothing else was in bad shape. YEAH ! Now for the reason of my post. I went to a rather big outfit at the Denton municipal airport in Texas. I should have asked price but didn't after looking on this site and team kitfox I expected somewhere in the realm of 300-400 for the inspection and work would be on top of that. Well my bill was a flat rate $995 for the inspection (evidently a $300 discount) and $600 for the work done. I expected somewhere around $100 shop time actual was 109 but inspection was a flat fee. The actual A&P said he usually bills 1300 on LSA. My question does anyone know a shope within an hour of DFW metroplex area that might be closer $ to what I expected? Lesson learned I will ask $ next year just thought prices I saw here was pretty common. I am guessing look for small shops at airports but the internet is less forthcoming than I had hoped. It is almost as if A&P shops rely on word of mouth.

I agree it made me much more comfortable in landing as the wings quit the alternating dipping as my landing speed decreased. It is rock steady all the way down and dropped my stall about 3 mph. What I liked the best is the steadiness of the wings now as the speed decreased.

Just out of curiosity what about it do you not like? Are you flying it close to stall a lot? These guys have MUCH more experience than I and they have helped me out on my journey with my own flyer. One option may or may not fit your bill and would be a lot easier. Vortex generators. I didn't like the wing walking my flyer did when I came in to land. If I didn't come in pretty hot 60 or higher the wings would take turns dropping as I came in to land. It just didn't feel very secure especially the closer and slower I got to the ground. I put VGs on the wing and under the H stabilizer from Land shorter.com (only plugging them because they were the cheapest I found at the time to experiment with) While they didn't turn my flyer into a short field f-16, it did drop my stall about 3mph but it REALLY solidified the wing in the air coming to land. It is SO much more comfortable to land now. I wouldn't go back now. Take it for what it is worth. I am a low time pilot about 200hrs so this may not be of benefit to you, but I am very glad I put the VGs on for no other reason other than what it did to my landing ability. I fly out of a 1000' grass strip with power lines on the north end. I have to slip hard to get down and stopped and vgs gave me more confidence in doing that.

Ok does this mean I screwed up? Is the a+p going to contact the faa during the inspection? Just was concerned since my condition insp was coming up next month
    I appreciate the help

    vortex generators and FAA
Guys need some help. Trying to be legal for my upcoming conditional and my ops limits state that for a major change I must notify the cognizant FAA office and get a written response from them prior to flight. In contacting the local fsdo and trying to find out who I must get a written response from all I have gotten so far is "its experimental do what you want just be careful" and "I don't know try such and such" well such and such is never at his phone and doesn't return calls. I finally got a guy today that in his 3 yrs hes never heard of this but at least he says he says he is going to find out. He was talking about having some one having to do all kinds of math to figure out the affect it will have on the plane and he has no idea who to have that done. The DAR I was pointed to said any faa inspector could help me out. Every thing I have seen on line and reading from the sites it doesn't sound like it should be such a big deal. Never having had an airplane go through a condition inspection before, am I overly worried? There is no mention of vgs in any of the books but I assume that an a+p would see that and go hmmm. Thanks for any help I know I have pestered you guys over the months but appreciate any help.

  7. tx_swordguy added a post in a topic flaperon rib tail reinforcement ?

while we are on this subject I bought some bonderite 1201 (used to be alodine 1201) to put on the aluminum to help with the epoxy adhesion to the rib along with the rivets. It says you can just paint right on top of it as if it were a regular primer (thinking that is for enamel or paint designed for composites/metal airframes. I am reading that poly tone has issues on aluminum. Has anyone put polytone over the bonderite coating? Should I put an additional primer on prior to painting the polytone?  I have used self etching primer on aluminum followed by enamel in the past and worked fine. Problem is the polytone is not enamel and I want this to match the rest of the plane. How did everyone else paint their aluminum rib reinforcements?

thanks. I think I may have figured it out with the nas623 screw. Dang these specs are confusing when they just don't give dimensions . Went ahead and made a second order with the ones you suggested just to be safe. Thanks again AK

    flaperon rib tail reinforcement ?
    Guys,
I am in the process of trying to reinforce the rib tail/ flaperon hanger. I am using .032 aluminum with a 1/4" 90 degree  angle bent on the bottom side. The repair will have the angle on the bottom of the rib tail instead of on the top like the kitfox is done. I am doing it that way because my avid (don't know about others) has a scalloped top side and a straight bottom to the rib tail. Anyway, my question is in doing this mod I have increased the width of the end of the rib by .064" and I currently have 5mm screws with an unthreaded grip length of about .346" and would like to find a 5mm screw with an unthreaded grip length of .400-.450" and cannot find any thing like that at any online suppliers (cant even find my original screws anywhere). Here is my question. My 3 options are 1. use original screws WITHOUT washers. 2. Use standard all thread type screws.. 3 drill a bigger hole and use 8mm screws with the proper grip that I can find. If I do not use washers I will have the steel flaperon hanger on the outside of the aluminum plates so the screw head and nut will be against the steel hanger. ( not fond of the lack of washers but....) If I use the standard all thread screws I can use the washers but I am not fond of the idea of the thread chewing up any material between the screw head and the nut. Option 3 drilling a bigger hole concerns me (maybe overly so) because in trying to reinforce the ribs I would be taking material away. Maybe I am overly cautious since this plane has been flying as is for over 20 yrs.

    avid lord shock mount
I am looking for a supplier for the avid engine shock mounts (lord mount) for a rotax 582. I have an avid flyer later model b and the engine shock mounts are starting to show some cracks/ deterioration in the rubber. I ordered the lord mounts aircraft spruce sells (2") but they do not fit. Not only are the mounting holes slightly different but the rubber shock was way to big for the hole in the engine mount on the plane. Any ideas?
    Thanks Mark

1avidflyer= I was flying an avid flyer c model with a rotax 582. I did not build it I am the third owner and airframe has over 1200hrs. There may be a kink in the fuel line somewhere that I am not seeing so I cannot count that out. What I do know is that I have not had any trouble with fuel flow if both the electric pump and the mechanical pump are working. We all must do what we feel comfy with. Me I feel comfortable with electric AND mechanical fuel pumps installed and operating.

after having an engine out (rotax 582) thinking my electric pump should only be used as a back up as needed (take off/ landing), I am of the opinion two or more pumps on all the time. If you have too much pressure than get a pressure regulator. My engine out= about 5 gallons in wing tank electric pump off, mechanical pump on(with gravity). It started sputtering and running so badly as to get the "oh shit pucker" going. I looked over and fuel pressure was almost non existent. I turned on electric pump and it roared back to life within seconds and ran without a hiccup back to the airport. (2nd or 3rd flight of a new to me airplane). Lesson learned was always have the electric pump on because even with the mechanical pumping it would not draw enough through to run the engine. It ran on mech/gravity only for about 45 min until I burned enough fuel that the weight of the fuel was not enough to push it through the electric pump (at least that is my take on it) 1/4" fuel line takes more pressure than you might realize to move fuel up to the carbs especially if you are using alot  throttle. It never totally gave out but it was DEFINITELY not making power and I was not holding altitude. One thing you might not realize is all the attitude changes you have while flying can play into how much fuel your carbs get (another story). In a car the entire fuel system is level. If you bank one way for a while you may lose fuel to your header for a little while and it may take longer than you want for gravity to catch up. My opinion is a mechanical is cheap insurance. If you do lose the mechanical, run the electric ALL the time not as here and there when you think you need it.

not sure if I remember the speed numbers for lsa but think it is max of about 120-130 and cannot stall above 50-55 mph if I am remembering right.
edit; max level speed of 138mph
    max stall speed of 51mph.

Ok guys gonna hijack but along the same thought. I already fly an avid and have the SP tailwheel. I am interested in the Wittman tailwind which is obviously a faster airplane. I was told by a friend that is a CFI but not instructing that I could get a speed rating add on. My experience with my local FSDO leaves a lot to be desired as far as regs knowledge. I guess they are mostly concerned with the commercial guys. Many tailwinds are under/at the 1320 MTOW only have the two seats, VFR, etc the only difference being the speed. If I was to get said speed rating add on could I fly a tailwind fitting all other LSA  parameters? Or would I be forced into a Private pilot scenario and have to go that route? This isn't an immediate purchase but a long term goal eventually. I just have no desire to fly high, at night, or IFR and sport pilot privileges fit my flying desires to a T. Just thinking making a 7 hr drive into a 3 hr flight to see family would be nice.

  15. tx_swordguy added a post in a topic Paint or cover my strut fairings?

I think Joey was asking if the fabric will hold the fairings to the strut stronger than the glue alone. At least that was my take on the question. I think the answer would be yes it will but in actuality may not be needed. If the glue is solid the only thing I can see happening is a hard landing or some sort of jolt flexing the strut enough to "pop" the glue. Whether that is  a realistic issue or not I don't know. Simple paint would be the best weather proofing I would think. If the gear legs held up I would sure think just painting the struts would too.

no expert but it sounds like a loose bolt somewhere rattling in a hole. Once the engine hits a certain vibration frequency it stops and then starts up again when the rpms go down the sound comes back. To me it does not sound engine /prop related. Again that is my impression from an internet video so the sound may be completely different in person.

dont know for sure but liability is probably a good thing to have and is cheap enough. My liability on an 18,000 avid was going to be in the neighborhood of 350 a yr. full coverage is costing me 7 times that. If you have an engine out and crash into someones property, being an airplane owner people will automatically think you are wealthy and they will see $$$$$$$$. Cant see how any state could require full coverage. Only the bank can require that,,,,,, or in my case the wife

Like I said. I have always done it that way. That is what got me (creature of habit) only difference was the mr funnel. Not to say I have always been doing it right, just that I have been lucky for 40 yrs and the only difference was the mr funnel. I know the why/ how it happened and being a fire fighter I knew that explosion was not a problem due to too much gas fumes in the can. As I said I saw the foaming swirling gas and at the time it flashed I was already starting to think " you know I bet that is building up some (ignition) static". Brain was just a second or two late. Hopefully someone can learn from my experience. Telling people at the fire station, I have not found one person that has had, knows, or even heard of  anyone that has had static ignite gas like that. It CAN happen so be a little more careful than I was.

While we are on the subject. I will let you know about my experience recently with the "mr Funnel" filter/funnel product. I use non ethanol mogas and the heavy square moto cross type gas cans. It was the second time for me to use the mr funnel. I was filling my gas can in the bed of my truck with the mr funnel sitting on top of the can filtering the gas. I had to hold the nozzle out away from the funnel about 4" to keep from splashing gas all over the place. I was standing in the truck and was thinking how much swirling gas was going on in the funnel about the time it flashed and ignited. I had a fireball of about 3' diameter flash. I released the trigger and put the nozzle down on my tailgate and had to put out a couple of very small dribble fires while the fire in the funnel remained burning. I looked around and the entire parking lot was concrete and open so I threw the funnel out into the parking lot before it could melt and dump the gas all over the place. luckily the funnel prevented the gas can from igniting also. I let the gas burn off and then put out the burning plastic funnel. I will say this. I am a 27 year fire fighter and have NEVER seen static ignite gas before. It made a believer out of me. I do believe the gap between the nozzle and can  plus the swirling fuel is what caused the static. I have since changed my fueling practices ( I no longer use the mr funnel, I place the cans on the ground and I make sure the nozzle is in direct contact with the plastic container hoping that any static is bonded between the can and the nozzle, I also have a fire extinguisher within reach while filling my plane) Plastic is not a very good conductor so it is not easily bonded. I have been filling plastic gas cans the same way for almost 40 yrs with NEVER a problem until using the mr funnel. Not saying it is a bad product, just saying the way I used it was obviously not correct. Maybe I was just lucky for 40 years, it just seems coincidental the second time I use it this happens. We all do some dumb stuff sometimes luckily I didn't burn my truck or me and maybe someone else can gain something from this. We all get complacent but as I learned static is real and will bite.

Thanks Bryce I was concerned about that and watched the temp during the test flight. It reached 170 on climb for just a min or so towards the end of the climb to 1000'agl cruise was 150-155 with outside temp about 82. I was thinking I might need to increase the fairing underneath an inch or two in order to increase the suction through the radiator. The exhaust muffler does take up a large portion of the cowling space. I have the all inclusive engine analysis system. It is set to alarm at 190 but I may drop that to 180 to catch my attention earlier.

yes he added more ribs(about every 11" I believe) and the .083 spars, struts were also increased as well as carry through tubes I believe. I know this doesn't make an automatically well built plane, but the builder was an A&P and did seem to make a nice plane. Because  it has so many hours and still is in good shape makes me feel very good about this plane and happy I bought it.  It is also kept very light comes in at around 580 and has bungy gear. I plan on putting a pneumatic matco wheel on as it has the hard maul on it now without the cam plate.

Ok maybe changing model is not the correct term. It is still listed through FAA as a b model. What I intended to mean was that he beefed the plane up in order to meet the 1150 lb gross as well as change the radiator system and cowling out to be more in line with the later models. He put heavy hauler wings and structural components in to meet the additional gross. Forgive my brain fart in what I was trying to convey. To my knowledge you cannot on paper change what the original plane is listed as and I have since edited my original post.

New owner and newbie trailering hints
I recently bought an avid flyer in really good shape. Started as a late B model that was upgraded structurally to meet  C model heavy hauler standards. 1150 lb gross with rotax 582. It is in fantastic shape and has been flown a lot over the years with 1200 hours and its on its 3rd engine. I trailered it back from Wisconsin to Texas on an open boat trailer that worked very well with just a couple of complaints. Not knowing how it would move /vibrate that long distance I had a couple of rub areas so I wanted to pass along some tips for new owners like me that might not know what to look for in packaging the plane. This plane spent most all its life with the wings extended so the 2 owners prior to me ( I am the third) never ran into issues. With the wings folded and the rudder and elevators secured there was still some movement that I was unaware of happening despite all my research. even with a small piece of foam rubber the owner put between the flaperon and tail I got a couple of rub places that I did not notice pulling until I had gone a couple of hours. I ended up with a 1" rub on the front of the vertical stab that need a patch. My suggestion would be to get a long piece of 2" foam rubber maybe  18"x4' on each side of the tail so the tail is sandwiched between each flaperon and the foam takes any vibration. I got some additional foam at walmart and it really solidified the wings movement the rest of the trip (everything moved more as one piece rather than each piece moving individually. Also the builder fabricated air foils on everything which is great except when folded the air foil on the strut close to the bottom pivot is up against the plane and rubbed a bit. When it was folded it looked and felt really solid, but there is a lot of little movement going on that over the course of 1000 miles did just a little bit of damage. Nothing that can't be fixed and now I know better. I think I will cut off the bottom part of the strut air foil so I can trailer it. I thought about extending the wing tie down rod so the wing will actually stick out another 6" each side to miss the side of the plane. That is the easiest fix. Just don't know yet. I have 1000' field I plan on using but will have to trailer it 10 miles to the airport so I can get familiar with it prior to trying my field for the first time. I can do that trip at 30-40 mph so not really worried about it. If I extend the rods there will be gap in the flaperons/tail of about 6-10" that will need to taken into account with some sort of packaging. Anyway thought I would share. Thanks to Joey for answering questions about the earlier avids . I thought I was pretty well prepped for the ride home and had my truck loaded with tools, tarps, 2 spare tires and everything else I could think of I might need.  I didn't realize I needed to foam EVERY possible rub place since it "felt" so solid when it was folded. Hope this might help others.

Ok guys thanks for the education. I have decided to pass on that particular plane. I do have another avid within a 4 hr drive to look at that was recently recovered in Oratex with a 670 rotax. I feel comfortable with the 2 stroke in both working on it and what to look out for. I do have a question about what to look for legal wise since both of these items are obviously not original to a 94 era airplane. My understanding is that both the engine swap and the covering is supposed to at least be signed off by an a&p/ inspector . He claims it is current in the annual, but what should I look for in the books especially if this work was carried out AFTER the annual was done? THanks in advance I am learning so much researching the purchase on this and other sites.
