Ears are a better judge of mag drop on a 582 than a tach. The tiny tach's are so cheap and light, try one per ignition so an in flight ignition failure can be picked up when/if it happens

A properly setup injection system will use an average of 70:1 (I have seen 100:1 but wouldn't reccomend it)this may help with yout tank size choice.

Some of the push pull rods under the seat have a small bend for clearance,is this what you are referring to?Any other bending done would take a massive effort with the stick,if that is the case a thorough inspection of all fittings etc would be a good idea.

Yea flutter is REAL bad and can come from unlikely sources.I had a randome flutter in turbulence when I got negative or zero g, after much searching i replaced the turtledeck bushes as there was a very small movement, problem sorted!' Take the time to check and recheck,if it doesn't feel right there may be a real problem lurking.

  6. Dusty added a post in a topic 582 Burn Rates

This might help (excuse the metrics imperial mix) my 582 KF3 on x country uses 15 litres per hour off the Hobbs, which includes warmup etc, if I stay below 3000ft which gives an egt of1000-1100 f.Most of my x country legs are typically around 2 hours due to only having 40 litres of fuel,I fly at 5300-5400rpm in the tiny tach with an airspeed of 60 kts,if I go to 70 kts (5700) fuel burn goes to 18 litres ph,50 kts fuel is only 13 litres ph,with my Hacman type mixture control and leaned to 1150f I get around 1-2 litres per hour less fuel burn but can maintain15litre ph even up to 8000 ft to get over most of our mountain passes. My needle jet combination is non standard and has taken a lot of trial and error to get right!(I even run 35 idle jets)
as an interesting side note my 582 runs smoother than my 912 KF4 and per nautical mile travelled uses slightly less fuel but at a slower speed also I typically carry twice the fuel in the 4

Match works on my kit foxes, make sure you do a weight a balance before flying, also backing into the hanger space is easier with the full swivel, landing slightly tail first isnt necessarily a bad thing!

Mine have been repaired with wooden doublers due to a flapperon contacting the ground when one of our airforce pilots was "demonstrating" it.

  9. Dusty added a post in a topic Flying the Tail

I am a fan of getting the tail out of the dirt as quick as possible, not sure if it makes a real big difference to the takeoff distance but visibility is better.i have found applying flaps before rolling gets the tail up quickest.

Now would be a good time to reinforce the rib tails.

Thanks for that,I don't know how I missed those sites.i will see if I can source the donuts locally but would need shore numbers or just experiment,my springs need replacing as they are settling,( or myselfe and JFA need to go on a Jenny Craig diet) thanks, any other information appreciated.

AOSS system ? I can't find any reference to it on the interweb. I too would like a rubber donut suspension but can find very little information. Rubber seems more practical for weight ? And would give a progressive rate of absorption so no chance of a metal dead stop.Getting the correct rubber would be important.I have he HIGHWING cabane setup which has done very well so far.
    any suggestions appreciated ,Thanks

  13. Dusty added a post in a topic NGK Iridium plugs

If the plugs are the ones with the very fine electrode just be careful when checking the gaps as I snapped one off with a very gentle push of a feeler guage.I got a bit nervous and replaced them at 50hr intervals which didn't make them economic in comparison to the regular BR8es which do a reliable 50 hrs.
Changing he idle jets to 35's make a huge difference to the idle smoothness

Citroen (2cv)?and DAF both made an opposed twin. The DAF has been tried without success here and even a locally produced DAF based engine failed to deliver.it would be an interesting project for someone ,go on ED you know you want to.

  16. Dusty added a post in a topic Coolant Hose Touching Exhaust

I won't be near the hanger for a couple of days do can't supply photos.the copper is bent with a spring inside to prevent crushing.the ends are crox flared  and hose clamped to stop the hose coming off, make sure they Don't touch the exhaust or they will chafe.

Hard to say without seeing a photo, but any of my hoses that go near the exhaust transition to copper tubes with croxed ends.   The copper won't mind the heat and will give a little more clearance.

  18. Dusty added a post in a topic Need some gear measurements

I have a Highwing  gear and std  kitfox gear,I have also found with a rearward c of g the tail takes too long to get up. Moving the gear rearward would be an improvement,I wouldn't worry too much about sticking your prop in the dirt (try sitting in your plane and getting a helper to lift the tail till the prop contacts the ground!)
When your mods are done I would be real keen to hear how much improvement this makes.
    cheers

Any more information on the dual weight option, the STI appears to have them.My 4 1200 has only one outboard each side,is the dual weights a necessary mod?
We recently have had an avid break a flapperon in flight (by the turtledeck hinge and possibly unrelated to oscillations) but it does make one wonder!

  23. Dusty added a post in a topic Rotax 582 top end rebuild

Aftermarket Pistons have been good for me(SPI)? Make sure they are two ring and have the hole in the side of the piston as I had a set of these sent out and they required  rejetting and the top bearing clearance was starting to loosen after 150 hrs.Use genuine rotax cageless bearings and pins as most aftermarket sets appear to be caged.
If your cylinders can be honed and still be within the maximum allowable size that's fine(some of our operators hone new engines out to near maximum size, these operators have never had a cold seizure.
The SPI ? pistons I now have are coated on the sides and have a ceramic coating on top which would have to be a bonus. My 582 definatly makes more power with these Pistons,I wouldn't hesitate to use these again.

A low pressure sandblast will get it looking like new again if the charring hasn't gone too deep.
