  1. Dusty added a post in a topic Recommended bungee for a fat plane?

My gear is slightly toed in but hasn't been a problem but she is a bit squirrelly,I intend to put a grove setup on in the next few weeks but i don't want to make it too easy for the instructors or students

Roll your plane forward and back as this will give an indication of alignment. My 3 has good bungees and sits with the gear up snug to the belly, but push it backwards into the hanger the legs pull away at different rates and looks like yours.

My last w/b check saw a CG at 14.5 ,it is due a reweigh and I would like to be further back 16"?before I filled the tail wheel with antifreeze my landings were a bit randome

I have the stolspeed vg's under the tail of my KF4.Fitted as per the instructions (4" forward and30mm spacing)from memory. The airplane is now a joy to land,I can even get the tail wheel on first if needed.Over the fence is now 5-8 kts slower and I feel  more confident knowing the nose isn't going to drop when I run out of elevator.
they are well worth the effort.

The best dryer I have found is a air to air intecooler (any radiator that can handle the flow and pressure )between the compressor and the pot. The air has to get cool enough to drop he moisture before it gets to the pot, also put the pot in the airflow of the cooling outlet of your compressor if possible, keeping it warm will minimise internal condensation.Any pot that has a full pressure drop on shutdown is prone to moisture buildup, unfortunately the alternatives are hard to justify in a non commercial situation. When you do a media recovery add around 25-30% new material, this will give a more predictable flow and blast profile.
apologies for the late reply but I trust this information may make any future blasting  a little easier
    cheers

  6. Dusty added a post in a topic Double brakes

FYI the brake pedals on a kitfox 4-1050 are "back to front"to those used on a 4-1200.The geometry was changed which required a reversal of pedals.

  7. Dusty added a post in a topic Lockable Tailwheel?

The Matco appears to be are reliable design that when set up right are just about foolproof (and will unlock in a ground loop as I had an instructor demonstrate to me recently)
the happy feet comment is sound advice

    Tail spring mounting
Having just replaced my broken 2 leaf spring with a 3 leaf, how tight should the mounting bolt/clamp be.I assume there needs to be some allowance for flexing. There is a thin reinforced rubber pad between the Spring and rear clamp.(Fox 4 1200)
    cheers

Did the simmonini? Use a c box or a copy. There may be a few of these lying around.

  10. Dusty added a post in a topic motor mount?

Someone may want to check my math but my 582 powered 25 year old fox has over 1300hrs on the clock. 45 knts would be a realistic average speed over the aircrafts life. that's around 58000 nautical miles, nearly 3 times around the world without an oil injection failure(or any other failure other than loosing one ignition)these engines if cared for are very reliable.
I'm sure over that time someone would have forgotten to add oil to the mix

When you are rebuilding your cylinders  try to locate some boots to keep the sand etc falling off your shoes out of the workings, they will last longer.

A good example of what NOT to do,however it takes a lot of and practice and discipline to get it right. Get some height and practice practice practice till ithe correct recovery is second nature.I had a similar event a few years back and had a satisfactory outcome.A kitfox will recover very quickly from a seemingly impossible situation.
thanks for posting as there is a good lesson here,I feel for the pilot (and his bank account) but it could have been worse if the personnel and vehicle were a little further forward.

  13. Dusty added a post in a topic Modified thermostat housing

I fitted one to mine and have a quick warm up and steady as a rock temps,I would strongly reccomend  fitting one ,drill a small  bleed hole to keep some flow and prevent "gulping"during warmup.
also is it possible to fit a standard housing with a 90 degree radiator hose as that one looks very suspect

My way of getting off quick is similar but I use about 1/3 flap to help get the tail up as I have a short prop and acceleration is poor until the tail is well up.Getting rid of flap while still in ground effect is a wise move(an engine failure with full flap isn't fun)

Those glass filters is what I have always used as they can be visually checked,I mount them on standoffs to minimise vibration and have never had a leak or any problems.

Definatly change the bungees. Also the safety cables may be a bit short and should be further inboard (this has been covered in this or the other channel?)

  17. Dusty added a post in a topic Blocking off the Oil Injector 582

One of my planes has 1200 hours of trouble free flying with oil injection,it is good to pull up to th the pumps on a x country and not worry about mixing.all the failures here can be traced back to the operator, broken cables,no oil,air in the system etc, arn't injection failures. The stripped gear rumour is usually from disconnected oilers that will eventually seize,I would recommend leaving it on.

  18. Dusty added a post in a topic Second set of eyes Rotax 582

A few things,I don't see a filter on the oil injection it may be near the tank which isn't shown. If you have the line off make sure the system has no air in it,and run premix until you are sure the pump is delivering the right amount of oil.
I am unfamiliar with inverted mount setup but the steam vent on the head would need to be in another location?

I may be wrong but believe the grey top with the non ceramic seal needs the lower pressure.

  21. Dusty added a post in a topic Kitfox 3 Bushplane Project.

I believe most facet type pumps like to "push" rather than pull, so low mounting is preferable.paper element filters aren't recommended here as any water in them soaks and can freeze causing issues.

  22. Dusty added a post in a topic Just picked up this Model 1 kitfox

That would have to be one of the best colour schemes around, just install a 582 and go have some fun! A 912 is around 50lbs heavier which may be a problem for an early Fox.The adverse yaw is something you will quickly get used to.

  23. Dusty added a post in a topic What pitch to use on a 582 3 blade 68" Kiev 2.58 gearbox

Just a FYI, as the subject has been well covered before.Dont be tempted to fly a 2stroke If the prop is under pitched, make sure your revs are actually what the tacho says. A fine pitch and a cool day can send your EGT's into meltdown territory,If you ever experience this,a little choke will drop the temps enough to get you safely back on finals.A little much pitch will just mean the engine isn't producing the maximum power, possibly the safer option?
