I thought the biplane was doing a"stolen plane" routine

There is one sure fire way to get a perfect landing every time.
Unfortunatly nobody has discovered it yet!
Seriously,a stabilised approach is a good starting point,if things don't feel right go round.

  3. Dusty added a post in a topic Another engine out from an oil injection failure

Many years ago I had a lubrication related failure in an air cooled non rotax engine.the shop that did the rebuild told me never use an oil specifically designed for liquid cooled engines in an air cooled engine.
Oil technology has probably moved on,but just a word of caution.
The 503 is generally a bullet proof engine(they don't make enough power to hurt themselves

  4. Dusty added a post in a topic Sonex Tail dragger

On paper they appear great,I will be giving a sonex a real hard look when I am looking for a faster plane for those big flyaways
my only concern is leg room(I have still to try one for size)there is a seat mod for more room. There is a 912 adapter mod which would be a great improvement over the aerovee
Sonex,  there appears to be two camps love em or hate em.
There is an active forum last time I looked, they should be able to get you an intro to a local enthusiest.

Another way of streamlining is to add a cargo pod. There is no noticeable speed drop with the pod on or off. The aircraft does feel smoother in flight with it on. There must be a lot of turbulance

  6. Dusty added a post in a topic Trimming out the plane?

This has been an interesting discussion!
My Kf3 has the same heavy left wing if the flaps are fully retracted, add a little flap and the problem goes away.Maybe it's just a quirk of the early mixer geometry.I hadn't considered p factor.Anyone with a 912 Avid or Fox have the opposite wing heavy?

  7. Dusty added a post in a topic Sandblasting

Powdercoating is one of the hardest coatings to remove.Unless you have access to a commercial blaster (200+cfm)you will have a real battle. The grit I use is sold here as speedblast  garnet or D+ grade but the cost for the amount you us as a "blast to waste" will really make you hurt.Do you have assess to 30/60 grade crushed glass? This will be slower but the next best thing.Someone on this forum once suggested gasket stripper!Epoxy paint usually fries powdercoating so as an experiment soak a rag in epoxy thinner, wrap it around some powder coating possibly followed by some clingwrap to keep the solvent In,
    have fun,keep smiling.

  8. Dusty added a post in a topic Air in Brake lines

A failed calliper seal would generally show as a weep. As for air entering,I would say possible but unlikely. The calliper "o"rings we use are nothing special and can be located at a hydraulic seal supplier.Automotive brakes usually use a square profile seal which is to retract the piston fractionally when the pressure is released, there is no advantage in this design for our use.The most common area for air to enter the system is the ring that seals the spear of the brake master cylinders. This seal rarely leaks, but will readily let air in on a sudden release of foot pressure on the pedals,A lot of dirt enters here off footware and surprisingly the passenger side on a dual setup is usually the culprit.I hope this long winded explanation is of some help.
    cheers

  10. Dusty added a post in a topic Kitfox Highwing gear on an Avid???

I have the Highwing gear on a kitfox and the only improvement I could see other than a better Spring setup ,would be to have the wheels about 4 inches further back.If you can make it fit ,it will be great improvement on the original gear.

  11. Dusty added a post in a topic New Hangar Floor

The standard kitfox type radiator seems to provid more than enough cooling for a 582.They are still a little draggy but simple and not subjected to the vibrations on a motor mount setup.

Your pilot definatly gave you your money's worth on that trip. The lake that appears at 1:05 in the second video I believe to be lake Alabaster, there is a great gravel bar on the western end

I had a similar situation were the pinion screw came undone. It came to my attention when doing an oil change as there was a lot of metal on the plug. The shim(shims?) had failed due to the hammering at idle,it had been loose for so long the screw had a flat spot worn in the threads from rattling around. We cleaned it up and had a few extra eyes look it over.there was no gear or bearing damage visible. An oil change was done at 10 and 20 hrs with no metal visable on the plug. These boxes are tough!      The only giveaway the problem in hind site was a rough idle below 2000rpm and the start was a little slower.

+1 on the Chinese knockoff pump.Mine didn't make 100hrs and fed bits of rubber into my filter. The facet's are generally very reliable.

  16. Dusty added a post in a topic Ronin's KFIII Build Thread

The KF 4 (small rudder)seems more stable in rough air, whereas the 3 needs constant rudder correction to counter the eileron inputs. If I was to rebuild my 3 I would consider the conversion. The big tail 1200 fox is a major leap forward in stability also.
As a side note the performance of the 4 v's the 3 with a 582 is the same in all areas.

  17. Dusty added a post in a topic Rotax 582 mag error

Can you hear the variation between left right (or front back), tacho error is normal .
I tell 582 newbies the best place to look when doing a mag drop test is out the window!
if there is a noticeable difference, plugs is the first item to look at as it gets more involved and expensive from there.

  19. Dusty added a post in a topic Rotax 670 - 2 hrs TT

Its a late 670 with the ignition pickup at top.The cranks are even different to the early ones. I'm not sure how easy it is to convert the later ones to dual ignition. The early 670's have provision for dual pickups. The later engines arn't as easy to mount a gearbox to (welding required).I can't get enough detail from these photos to be sure on this one.

Yup,just remove the cam.Carry a screwdriver to unlock the assembly to back your plane into the hanger.
    Or install a Matco.

The left wing definatly appears high, does the turtledeck even fit?Dont be tempted to fly without a good fit with the top and Bottom in the support bearing.

    Decal removal
One of my Skystar fox labels was looking a bit tatty so I removed it.The glue stayed behind and isn't in a hurry to be removed!  Any ideas?        I believe the paint may be aerothane on polyfibre?petroleum has removed 90% .

The standard idle jet is way too rich. The 912 jet (35) is way better, but if you are premixing the #45 would be safer.
egt above 950 at idle is good!
