I'm hoping to start covering my first wing in the morning and I'm still confused on gluing the cap strips. I've read you should apply glue to the cap strips and allow to dry before applying the fabric but I've also read (and seen pics) of just gluing to the front spar trailing edge root rib tip and around gas tank fill neck but not on all of the cap strips until after the fabric is on then glue through the weave, so which is it? I want to get started soon but want to make sure I do it right.

    Robert

The avid manual says to glue to the ribs first starting on the under side. I put on 3 coats of poly tac, then layed the fabric over the wing and started gluing from the trailing edge forwards on the rib cap strips. I used a few spring clamps to hold the fabric in place on the trailing edge and leading edge spar tube. It only takes a couple minutes for the glue to dry and hold it in place. I used "thickster" nitrile gloves and rubbed the glue into the fabric good. On the tank, I just let the poly brush soak in and that will "glue" it to the tank. It is too large of an area to effectively use the poly tac unless you thin it WAY down, and even then, it wont lay on as smooth as when you just use the poly brush on the tank.

No transponder is needed for coming into Merrill. It's not required for Lake Hood or the Lake Hood Airstrip either. The Alaska Supplement should have all the details you need. Merrill does have a control tower so you'd have to talk to them. There are quite a few experimental aircraft based at Merrill so I don't think that should be an issue.

There are no limitations just because you are "experimental" - however you should say that word with your number when you call in - I use experimental Kitfox N1234. It helps controllers, I guess, and I think is required?

Merrill had not required a TSP when I flew there, but that was 10 years ago. I flew with a controller who worked there. I went to Av school on Merrill, but place is too busy for me, and no good place for an emergency landing when taking off toward downtown - prefer Birchwood.

I have a rotax 582 with the bing 64 carbs. Wondering if it is normal for egts to run a little hotter at 3500 to 4500 and then cooler at the higher rpm range. I also have the manual in flight adjustable carbs.

    Thanks

yes it is normal. My EGTs on take off run right around 1000. At cruise I run them up to 1100 or 1150. I think you should be setting the mixture right around 4000 RPM. turn it out till she starts blubbering, then turn them in one turn at a time till it cleans up. Keep an eye on the EGTs as they should be reading within about 25 degrees of each other. How many RPM are your turning at wide open throttle tied down on the ground?

Do you see a need to have one in Alaska for an AVID.

    Thanks

Mine had one in it when I got it, but I took it out. I avoid Atown like it is the plauge just becasue I hote Atown  I go into birchwood and wassilla etc, but have not taken the Avid into Merril yet. It all depends on where you want to fly as to whether you would need one or not. I can do a little research and see if you really need one for Merril.

Merril is not issue even without transponder unless they changed the airspace. I think for ANC you need to call ahead and get permission. Atleast, that is how it used to be.

Just curious what the limitations are for an AVID flyer. Can this type of plane land at Merrill field if I have a Mode C transponder?

Is there certain airspace it is limited to by law once I have a certificate of airworthiness because it is experimental?

    Thanks

Hmm, surprised you can still hear him when he's way out on the couch like that. Maybe you should get him one of those new-fangled anti-snore mouth pieces. BTW, those cheesy little infomercial things don't work near as well as those ones with a big red rubber ball and black leather head straps. Don't worry, he'll do anythng for you. He loves you!

Ed, how much are you asking for your electric unit, Ray Allen? and what all do you have for it ie switch etc. I'm still trying to decide how I want to run mine. Still have a little time to decide though, I'm planning to start fabric on the wings tomorrow.

    Robert

    Robert,

Check the Kitfox catalog and let me know if $100 is too much to ask. I will have to check mine to make sure it works before selling. Sold the RAC stick grip with switches. Would have to look at unit to see brand - but sure it came from Kitfox. I can supply photo for mounting if you dont have that info - think too, it may be in a couple of my Avid/Fox manuals. can copy.

Well first Christine, let me say welcome, congratulations and thank you for your willingness to join in with such unabashed enthusiasm! You have hooked a near legend, this #1Snakeoil Salesman, and I'm sure you will have ample opportunity in the coming months to reinforce or rebuke some of the rumors surrounding one of AK's more notorious reputations. For example, Leni always referred to himself as a "2-stroke" kinda guy. Not sure why he would want to broadcast that all over the Internet, but I figure you might be able to set the record straight.

    Thanks, talk again soon! :beerchug:

 While he may fly a 2-stroke air plane and he may ride a two stroke snow machine, I can assure you that he is not a "2-stroke" kinda guy. LOL

  16. Russ.

Ok, I let this stew for a bit but I just gotta say... Russ is so damn cheap he refused to pay for an extra 2' of V- nose up front. He talked the trailer mfg into that "mini" nose so the plane would fit with the spinner on and his 2-blade prop set vertically. I told him it was a BIG mistake!!

What's he gonna do when he wants to swap out to a 3-blade? :hammerhead:

Truth be known the dealer made a mistake and built it with full v-nose. Only gave me 20' long I.D. He rebuilt to 23' I.D square nose with a corner closet space. The other truth is I get away from the Fat Bastard for 6 months.frech11.gif

Thanks for the corner closet idea Doug. See you in Apriltumbleweed.gif

    okay baby

By the way boys I'm not going to be a party pooper, it is more like I will join in with the fun. No matter how odd the subject, reply, or what ever else you guys can come up with I will be happy to join right in with you.

    Sincerely Christine :BC:

Avid Mk-IV manual says 8-7/8" min. axle length necessary for use of wheel penetration skis or wheel pants with 6.00 x 6 standard tires and 8.00 x 6 tundra tires. Leave long and cut to proper length after final ski design. I bought some 3/4" 4130 steel rod, cold finished MIL-S-6758A-normalized to make new axles and cut 3/4"-16 threads for retaining nuts. Cut a center pilot hole on ends of axle while in the lathe. You will need to drill min. 1" deep and tap 7/16" x 20. Will also need to modify axle nut for a spring retaining clip, as the end axle bolt prohibits the use of a retaining cotter key in the end of the axle.

    How about these? LINK

I also have the Grove gear. I chose to add a second set of axles to the inside of the gear legs to mount my skis on.

I made up similar, but I have switch from Grove to tradditonal gear legs.
