I got a set of gear off a KF-IV sitting around I'll never need. What's it worth?

well crap, I forgot to get pics when I was home.  I will get some when I get back in.  I need to work a different schedule.  2 weeks on 4 weeks off would be good for everything but the pocket book!

How close are you getting on your plane?  gotta be close to paint by now huh?  She will be a work of art when you get it in the air.

Keep the questions coming Greg and John, it is well past time for you bird to be in the air!

    HI Greg,

Tell your old man (Hi John, thought you'd be flying by now with all that help!) to get a camera, us Yanks don't visualize all that good. A pic is worth 1000 words and the ability to post 'em here is one of the reasons this forum rocks! Besides, he told me 2 years ago he was going to email me some pics of your project, never thought an old military man would welch out on his word...

Now, may I assume you are referring to the steel spacer that is slipped over the axle?

[edit] holy crap that 1st attachment was huge, I've resized to just plain 'ol Fat

how far out of alignment are you talking here?  The caliper is floating so it does not have to be in 100% perfect alignment, but you dont want it 1/4 " out either.  Another way to get it is to run down to the hardware store and grab some 3/4" machine washers.  Put them between the gear leg and the spacer.

    Wheel/Axle installation
In the process of installing the wheels on our Mark IV Avid Plus. Manual says to align backing plate with the Brake disc. While at factory assist @ airdale crew cut spacers for installation. Upon installation of the wheels it became apparent that the alignment is not 100% flush.

My question is about this alignment. How important is it that this be exact? If it is then it appears that we will have to re-cut the (inboard) spacer (larger) to a more precise alignment.

    Sincerely,
    Greg

My tail ribs behind the tank have some of the varnish coming off and the glue on the ribs is dried and crumble because of the gas on them. This couldn't have happened in just a week could it? I think it has been leaking into the back of my wing for a long time.

Yes, it looks like about 6" of the top seam that is bad right in front of the rear spar.

so is the seam open just in  front of the spar?  hard to tell from this angle.  At any rate, it is just fiberglass and is easily repaired.  Just get the good epoxy that is made for gas tanks.  A little spendy, but worth it, especially if you ever have to put booze in the tank..

you can put in inspection rings real easy to take a look at the ribs, and re-gluing the fabric is easy.  You can go down and dirty and use a needle to inject the glue under the coving and push the fabric into it, or you can wipe the areas of the cap strip down to bare fabric, thin the glue and work it into the fabric real easy.  I rib stitched mine, akflyerbob used screws in his.  Leaving the stringers off, but leaving the mounts on and covering over them would make me suspect of any other workmanship on the plane... Stripping and getting a good look at what you have may be a good idea.

If you have the time and materials on hand, there is no reason why you cant strip, do quick repairs if needed and recover up to top coat in 1.5 weeks, quicker if you are not working by yourself.

I think the wing fabric would be okay.  There is some pulling away on the rib bottoms that I think can be re-glued.  The reason for the recover would be to inspect the ribs for possible water damage and other internal unknowns.  The plane was stored outside since '99.

The fuselage needs recovering to make it look right.  For some unknown reason the builder did not put the wood side stringers on it...  ?  The mounts for the stringers poke through (reinforced) holes in the fuselage side fabric.  Just some oddities like this.

It is covered in PolyFiber, so I think the fabric itself is okay (the finish is fugly).  I just have questions (long term) about what's underneath.

Working on shopping for hardware now.  Need the updated rudder peddles, too.

you would be very suprised, even shocked at some of the rag tag planes flying around here.  There are a shit load of planes here that the paint is peeling bad, faded, looks like shit, but the fabric is actually fine.  Hell I put a shit load of hours on a PA12 that was more duck tape than fabric.  The AI finaly made us put fabric patches on it instead of duct tape... The have no sense of humour sometimes.  As far as recovering, is the covering really bad or the paint.  What was it originally painted with?  I LOVE stits poly fiber for the extreme ease of field repairs.  Worste care, if the paint is toast and cant be rejuvinated, you can wash it down with acetone and a rag back to clean fabric in no time, then shoot it again and not have to go for a full recover.  Fuel lines and hardware are only a days work that can be done in the yard.  Forget the garage and geter done!

    Impatient...
Okay.  I'm going a little nuts now.

I have a rather ugly KF-IV in my garage with only one wing on it.  The other wing and h-stab are still off for the original transport home in a u-haul.  At the moment I can do nothing but sit in it and make airplane noises.

I need to finish my workshop before I can start the "restoration" on it.  I'm about going nuts with impatients.  The shop will take another week yet...

New fuel lines, hardware for the wings and tail, some fabric repairs and lots of other small stuff needs to be done before I can fly it.

Frankly, it needs to be recovered.  I'm hoping I can put this off for a little while so that I can fly it some and get used to it, first.  I'm waiting on the fabric expert from my EAA chapter to look at it.  I've gotten conflicting opinions from several people, so I want an expert to see it before I fly it or tear off fabric.

    Sorry, needed to vent...

Got my wing home today. Opened it up and this is what I found. It looks like the top trailing edge of the tank wasn't formed right. You can see how it is concaved. The fiberglass along this part is all soft. Leaking pretty bad all along it.

No, never ran a drop of booze gas through it. Going over to the airport tommorrow and take the wing off and bring it home. Should know what went wrong by tommorrow night. I'll take pictures and let you guys know. Talked to my friend in MPLS and he has repaired a few leaking Avid tanks. I think I will try to repair mine instead of going with the plastic insert tanks. I don't want to add another 15lbs if I don't have to.

    Bad fitting? Leaking sight gauge?

I've been lucky with my tanks. I did replace the leaking mil-spec o-rings in the quick drains with some from the auto parts store. They've held for 3 years now

All I run is auto fuel, probably 10% ethanol,.... The tanks seem to hold tight.  (knock on fiberglass)

We have a guy with a Glasair nearby and he went through the leaking tank crap. no fun.

    Gas tank leaking
Damn.  Went to the airport last night to go flying. Saw what looked like moisture on my wing behind my tank. No dew it was bubbled paint. The two rib bays behind the tank were full of gas. Major leak in tank. Go back over Sunday and take the wing off and bring home to repair.
