Sounds good...thanks for the info. After reading about several people having fuel starvation after a chunk of crap got stuck in the 90 degree elbow coming out of the tank it got me concerned. I have a filter between the header and the shut off valve and a gascolator between the shutoff valve and carbs so I should be alright.

I am still going to fill the tanks though and have a 4 ft chunk of line hooked to the bottom that is blocked off and not part of my plumbing and then let them drain back out through that line into a jug with the Mr Funnel like Leni said and see what comes out. Once they are empty again I'll pull the fittings and check for debris as well.

I'll be there all week.  I'll be setting up camp with my chapter (75) down across the street from the barn on Sunday.

Are you going to the Avid Lunch at the seaplane base on Wednesday?

After I cut access holes in my tank, I saw all kinds of shit inside of it. Called my friend in MPLS that has worked on Avids for years including tank repairs. He said not to worry about it to much, it is quite common.

I checked into this today and you would not be able to thread them strainers in. The fittings in my tank a 1/4" thread screwed right into the bottom of the tank. I did order a Mr. Funnel. I needed one a while back and this is a good excuse to get one. Amazon had the best prices I could find. I got the F8.

Spent three hours working on her today. Got my patch done and most of the rest of it prepped for paint. Still need to do some sanding but getting close to being ready to spray. Hopefully it comes out as well as the spots I fixed up on my elevator. Getting closer!

I buy mine from the local snowmachine shop.  Get a better deal on it that most places I have seen online.  Marinas should have some good fuel line to.

I believe both Lockwood and Leading Edge Air Foils (LEAF) carry that blue fuel line.  It is sold under the Bing brand name and is advertised as alcohol resistant/proof fuel line.  I only buy things from CPS that I can't get through any other supplier.  I have had issues with the owner of CPS.

California Power Systems. They are like Aircraft Spruce but specialize in ultralights. Their site is a little tougher to navigate but they are cheaper on a lot of stuff than spruce.

Mine sat for 8 yrs and I just filled them up, let them sit for a couple hours then drained them back into 5 gallon tanks with a Mr. Funnel in them.  Did not get any crap out of them.

I have VG's on mine.  They did help quite a bit when it comes to yanking and banking at low speeds and they did lower the stall about 6-7 MPH, however, you have to get the nose up to a rediculously high AOA to really see the speed difference.  On langing, I can come in with the power and touch the tail wheel with the mains 3' off the ground.  Dont do ya much good there, but they do indeed make a big difference on high banking accelerated stalls.

    Fuel strainers
The A&P that did my wings took my fuel fittings out of the tanks while we had the wing uncovered and cleaned them up real well. I did not see how the fittings screw into the tank and my book and plane are out at the hangar. Would these fit a STOL tank?

    http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/fingstrainers.php

After seeing several people have issues with pieces of the tank clogging fittings and having some older tanks I want to make sure this doesn't happen to me.

Also any good procedures for flushing the tanks? Mine have been empty for about 8 mos now and I'd like to give them a good flush before I fill them again. I really should have done it while they were sitting on sawhorses uncovered but that got overlooked on the to do list. I drained about 4 gallons out of each side when I took it apart with no noticeable sediment but I'd feel better about it knowing they were flushed out.

Gotcha! I figured it had to with the throw but didn't think about it effecting how it unlocked. I should of had some tabs welded on there before I painted it. Does a nut and bolt hold the extension okay? It seems it would want to pivot around the bolt under heavy loads.

Just get you the blue line from CPS. That stuff is bullet proof and you can see what is going on.

I got mine from AC Spruce, but you should be able to get them at the local airport FBO.  By extending the arm on the ruddder, you get more throw to the tail wheel.  I find that I cant unlock my tail wheel unless I really stand on the brake and hit lots of power.  I loike to be able to unlock it with full rudder so I can get it to swivel on the beach alot easier.

Damn Steve, I would say that you and my AI buddy are cut from the same cloth.  He said damn nearly the same thing you did in regaurds to the inspections after he did a little research when he came over to do my Condition Inspection.  It had been a long time since he had done one for an experimental so he brushed up and called his inspector from the ANC FSDO.

    Fuel Lines
I need to replace all of the "soft" fuel lines in my plane.  I have no idea what the current lines are or where they cam from.

It there a problem with using rubber "automotive" fuel line?  It should be ethanol safe even if the tanks are not...  What about the site tubes and vent line?

What about filters on the lines from the wings to the header tank?  I've heard argument for and against.  What say you all?

Would reusing the fire sleeve be acceptable?

    Back on topic here....(cough cough..,)

Here is a favorite of mine..... from the List, naturally.

..I hold a repairman certificate and am laid up with a broken leg. My neighbor who owns a J3 comes over and using my check list inspects my airplane. I am satisfied with his inspection and sign the log book beginning with the standard text, "I certify that this aircraft has been inspected according to...". Some one tell me where I have violated the FARs.
    ..."

The FAA does not allow a "repairman" to "supervise" any required inspection..., and it is spelled out quite clear in the FAR's.

    § 65.104   Repairman certificate—experimental aircraft builder—Eligibility, privileges and limitations.

    (B) The holder of a repairman certificate (experimental aircraft builder) may perform condition inspections on the aircraft constructed by the holder in accordance with the operating limitations of that aircraft.

Perform the inspection...YES.   Supervise the performance of the inspection by others....NO.

Compare this to the rules for A&P's......

§ 65.81   General privileges and limitations.
    (a) A certificated mechanic may perform or supervise the maintenance, preventive maintenance or alteration of an aircraft or appliance, or a part thereof, for which he is rated ......    Perform OR supervise...

Continue to .... § 65.85   Airframe rating; additional privileges.
    (a) ........ In addition, he may perform the 100-hour inspection required by part 91 of this chapter on an airframe, or any related part or appliance, and approve and return it to service.

Perform only..... I say again....Perform only.

The FAA does not allow "delegation of authority" when it comes to required inspections for aircraft, be it type certificated or Experimental amateur built.

I'll be blunt here... If you really want to fuck yourself, let someone else do the inspection only you were authorized to do, and then sign the maintenance logs as if you personally did the inspection.

As harmless and trivial as all this sound, it would.., has.., and will be... considered a violation of the FAR's and shit will fly if the Feds got involved with the paperwork in the future, say due to an accident or incident.

    You would get burned under....

§ 65.20  Applications, certificates, logbooks, reports, and records: Falsification, reproduction, or alteration.
    (a) No person may make or cause to be made—

    (1) Any fraudulent or intentionally false statement on any application for a certificate or rating under this part;

    (2) Any fraudulent or intentionally false entry in any logbook, record, or report that is required to be kept, made, or used, to show compliance with any requirement for any certificate or rating under this part;

The Condition Report is require under the FAA issued aircraft operating limitations.

    The FAR god has spoken.......
