So whereabouts is fish lake? My parents place is on One Stone Lake. They're out there now, probably be out there for another two or three weeks. I'm hoping for no more snow, or lots of it. There's about 4" accumulated on the lake, but not enough in town for skis yet. I get home on the 24th and hope to make it out there, be it on wheels or skis.

    Lodi Open house pictures
I flew about 30 miles to another field today that was having an Open House. It was a small event but quite a few neat planes flew in. Things got exciting when a Super King Air used for hauling skydivers landed super hot and his nose gear collapsed. They messed up the airplane even worse after these pics were taken when they lifted the nose with a fork lift and left main collapsed too, dropping the airplane on it's left wing. That thing was pretty much junk after that. They were trying so hard to get it cleaned up before the crowd arrived. Normally that airfield is a ghost town but I bet there were 50 people taking pictures after the incident. No covering that one up.

Think these guys are keeping Quad City Ultralights (Challenger) in business

    My bird

I could stare at a Cub all day long...never get's old watching one

RV's with more money into their paint jobs than I have into my entire plane

The Rutan designs are always cool. The velocity sounded HEALTHY when it did a 200mph fly-by

And now the dumbass stunt of the day. There was this airplane and a Twin Otter flying skydivers ALL DAY. They are notorious at this airfield for landing opposite direction and on a little tiny intersecting runway and never talking on the CTAF. They were making the round trip to 13,000ft and back in less than 15 minutes all day long today. Anyways it's only a matter of time before something like this happens. A guy that I was standing with works on King Airs and his theory was he got into the reverse very heavily after landing long and fast and one engine probably did not go in with the other causing a big swerve. He said the nose on those will unlock if you put a big side load on them. It could have just collapsed too... those airplanes get beat to death going up and down all day everyday.

Yup that's going to be expensive. Wish I would have gotten pics after they left main collapsed and they dropped it clean onto the left wing but I had already walked back down towards my plane.

17.1 hours and counting on my bird...ENJOY

Hello all, just thought that I'd introduce myself. My name is Nate Anderson. I live in Anchorage and work at the Milne Point oilfield, next door to Leni's field. I've lurked here awhile, am a member at the avid yahoo site and occasionally take a peek at the matronics site. I currently fly a Cessna 140, which I am trying to sell . I am also a very lucky bastard, having won a Searey amphib in a raffle. That was back in March and I have yet to fly it. Waiting on some paperwork issues as well as some mechanical issues. Hopefully it'll be airborne by the time breakup rolls around. As far as the Avid connection goes I have in my possession N4921S (S/N 55). I bought it as a wreck about ten years ago, which is the same condition it is in today. Hopefully I'll be tearing into it soon but I've got a few other things to take care of first. I've got alot of questions but will
probably save those until the plane is back in my garage. About two years ago I contacted Leni via email about the Avid, thinking that I was getting close to working on it, but stalled out. Oh well, someday.
Most of my flying is out to my parents cabin, located on the Iditarod trail about 20 miles from Skwentna, although I've taken a few good trips checking out the state. When I get around to it I'll post some photos. I don't know how much I'll post at this point in time but I like this forum and thought I'd speak up a bit. Just looking around here makes me want to start working on it today.
    Anyway, glad to be here.

    Hi Nate,
    Welcome aboard!

While I can understand where C5Engineer is coming from, I think it is one of the better mags/organizations. Yeah, it has got alot of corporate aviation stuff and some of their editors columns are on subjects far removed from most of GA, but they still run articles on small GA aircraft on a regular basis. I've only had about three calls from them over 10 years, and I do get mailings probably about three or four times a year. But overall I don't mind paying their subscription fee. A previous post mentioned the new person in charge of AOPA. Only time will tell but the previous chief, Phil Boyer, seems to have left some pretty big shoes to fill. Just my two cents.
The publication I do miss is CustomPlanes. I still have some old issues lying around and look through them on a regular basis.

Ironic-- I'm on an ice pack and doing 3x a week visits to the chiropractor for my lower back too...

As a side note to the video, that landing was without the fuel cap on the left tank...

OUCH.. I know the feeling. When my lower back goes out, it pinches nerves off and my core temp goes down to 91-92 and I sleep until they put my back in... kinda like a bear in hibernation. I used to sleep for days at a time on a heat pad till they figured it out. Some of the tests they did trying to figure it out were worse than the back pain!

<speedy recovery brew. get back on your feet and back in the air. We need more pics, vids and GOOD stories.

Yesterday I was getting ready to go and fly. I bent over to grab the fuel hose off the reel and sort of caught my toe at the same time on a crack in the concrete. My lower back COMPLETELY let go. I piled her up right there on the concrete. Took my breath away it hurt so damn bad. It took everything I had to get my fuel cap back on and the ladder put away. I hobbled over to the FBO and flopped on the couch until someone else showed up. Luckily it was a buddy of mine. I enlisted him to taxi my airplane back to my hangar for me and put it away. He had to help me in the truck. Lots of ice, ibuprofen, and two trips to my chiropractor later and I'm getting around at least today. Man I was pissed...it was perfect flying weather all day yesterday!! I'm not even 30 yet...all those years of Motocross are catching up to me I guess.

Sumbiatch I am glad I am not the only one that does dumb shit! The first time I ever saw what a loose or missing fuel cap would do, I was flying wing man for a buddy that was pulling some hunters off the side of a mountain. He wanted to keep it light so we were only putting 5 gallons in his J5. The second take off, he came off the ground, and I saw a streamer coming out of the top of his wing. I called him and he did a 180 and sat right back down on the runway. He could not have been in the air for more than a minute or two. I landed and we walked the runway and found his cap. In those couple minutes, he had lost all but about a cup full of gas!

The front and back of the cove just touch the spars while the bottom of the tank sits on the old f/g tank.
Just going to foam the corners. I plan on sheeting both rib bays with al. from leading edge to trailing edge, if the nutserts work like I hope they do.
I think RR uses only the support tubes, no ply box.
I was told that if you are starting with a new wing with no tanks you need the ply box if you do not use diagonals in the Avid.

I might not add the quick drains either. Have one in the header tank too. I would like to use my fuel outlet fitting though, it has a finger strainer on it. I might also use a bulkhead fitting coming out the inboard side of the inboard tank then down to the header tank like RR does it.
To install the bulkhead fitting you drill a 3/8 hole in the center of a penny, and on the side of your tank. Put fuel lube on the penny and the fitting, fish a length of wire through the bulkhead fitting hole up to the filler neck. Slide the penny on the wire then the fitting, pull the penny and fitting through the tank and work it into the hole, a little more fuel lube, then another penny and the nut, then tighten.

Sorry, gonna have to settle for a kick in jewels!

Although, I freely admit to living in a glass house... wife picked off a nice 8-point last week so I'm driving this loaner while the body shop does it's thing. For some reason, fumbling with two sets of car keys while tossing crap in the back seat and leaving the office was distracting enough for me to forget my cell phone sitting on the top of the car. Doesn't take much to lose focus sometimes, glad it was an easy lesson learned for you but my phone is fookd.

Ok, this might be a little hard on the eyes but here goes...

    - Not sure of the exact measurment, but the tanks do fit between front and rear spar inside of the old tanks.

Does the entire RR poly tank, including the cove ears, fit inside your Avid oem f/g tank BETWEEN the spars? Or does the tank sit between while the top ears of the tank cove sit ON the spars? If they set on, is it a snug fit between spars?

    - I think the RR covers with fabric.

That was my guess too, looked like nose ribs could be glued into the indentations which would make it easy to run fabric all the way to the root. I prefer the look of nose ribs along the entire wing rather than transitioning to a flat-top inner surface over the tank as in the oem f/g tanks or the wingtanks.com poly tanks with a top ply or alum skin. What are you going to do on yours?

    - Stace said silicone them in, then use houshold spray foam. I am going to just spray foam the 4 corners.

Would solid foam all around except for fitting access provide a much stronger wing? Sure would be a beyeotch to get out if you ever had to, but doesn't seem like a big weight penalty to do it. Are you going to use a hard ply cover over the tank or what's your plan there?

    - Look at the bottom of the tank. You glue three supports from rib to rib then set the tank on these. I am going to set mine on the bottom of the old tank.

Ok, that's kinda the opposite of the wingtanks.com poly install. I'm not sold on drilling into the spars for support brackets, but that does seem stronger than attaching braces either to the underside of the capstrips or even the rib web itself. I wonder if RR uses a sheet of ply plus the support tubes for a new wing install, like wingtanks.com recommends?

-No stringer at the top of tank. None on the fiberglass one either.

That stringer channel is something I noticed on one of the wingtanks.com versions (three different versions to date I believe). Don't know if the current version includes that but I like it because it allows the use of nose ribs all the way to the root, should one decide to dispense with a hard top skin over the tanks and under the fabric. More work for sure but nicer aesthetically, IMHO, though I don't know if the top skin is a strucural requirement, a good idea or simply not necessary when removing the diagonal drag tubes in the wing to fit these poly tanks. If RR doesnt use one...

    - Tanks won't fit 12" oc ribs.

Obviously not between two side-by-side 12" o.c. ribs. And if you retrofit the poly tanks into a HH wings with 12" o.c. spacing and old oem f/g wing tanks, doesn't matter because the center tank baffle is the same. However, on a new wing build w/ 12" o.c. spacing, one can use new long ribs for #1 root and #4 rib @ 12" o.c., but omit and replace #2 and #3 ribs with a new single rib @ 18" o.c. from root, between two new poly tanks. The best news is, that layout replaces the first three flaperon hinge rib tails used with the oem f/g tank with full long ribs at the hinge positions. So, much stronger hinges IMO.

    - Tank sump and fuel outlet are on the bottom outside of the wing with a fiberglass tank.

Yes but when comparing the two poly tank options, I think I prefer the other tank because the fittings allow for in-wing routing of fuel lines. I don't care so much for a quick drain on each wing, so long as I have a header tank with one.

    - All tanks have filler necks.

Wingtanks.com offers a neckless tank with sealed filler if you want when using two in series. I do like the idea of two filler necks for fast fills on tanks plumbed in series but prefer looks of a single cap, not to mention that little voice in the back of my head saying something about potential leaks at the inboard cap seal. Either way, I see the RR poly tank filler neck is centered while the wingtanks.com one is offset to the side. That might come into play for me in a new wing w/ 12" o.c. ribs ie., offset keeps the filler from falling right on a rib line... I think that might look goofy.

    - Brass threaded bulkhead fittings from tank to tank.

Threaded, huh? I like that better than push fittings but can you even get inside the tank to hold a nut?

Anyhow, thanks and three beers or cheers for taking time to answer all these questions. I'm sure a lot of folks are interested in these tanks and, at least for now, you be the only Avid guy we know that gots 'em.
