Here's a couple more articles, this time from Kitplanes magazine. One is a buyers guide to used KF's and the other is a great article on Dean Wilson. I know some people here have contact with Mr. Wilson. From all that I have read, he is quite an individual. I bought Avid #55 as a wreck and in the logbook it has the initial flight as being performed by Dean. I think that's pretty cool.

    Thank you Akflyer,

The engine will be 2000 Suzuki 1.3, 16 vlv. with a SPG gearbox 1:2.34.

I already spoke with Airdale. It looks like there is no exact location of the thrust line on Avid MK4. Some old forum threads indicate, it can vary up and down depending on the engine and cawling (except ~2 deg fix in horizontal plane to compensate for the P factor).

I assume, along the fuselage the thrust line is paralel with the tailplane, or is perpendicular to the firewall, but without drawings i have no proof of either assumption.

Any measurements will be of great help to me. Also, any input fro Kitfox MK4 will be very valuable.

    Thanks,
    Dan

Pretty cool article! It's too bad Dean was not a business man or he would have all the fame. Dean was the designer and Denney was the business man.

    Insane talent
Wow not really sure what to say about this guy. Check out the attention to detail. This guy needs to build himself a Sonex or an RV.

This website shows his work but I think this pic sums it up pretty well.

This guy has too much time on his hands

Greg Millers award winning custom Supercub is up for sale on Barnstormers. It has won Valdez and few other comps recently. If your not familiar Greg is also the pilot of Bushwhacker which is a HIGHLY modified experimental Maule. He started a video series titled Big Rocks Long Props. Here's a link..check out their sample videos. I own all their full length DVD's...great to watch after some beers when the weather is crap. I can only hope to reach anywhere close to that level of competency and proficiency in my Avid someday.

use the hysol. You should be able to google it and order just some small tubes if you only have a few tails to put on. You can get the hysol in small tubes with mixers on the end so you just squeeze and mix.

OK , I am not sure where I should actually post this, but I need to replace a few tails on my wings before I cover them. I see that the manual calls for structural adhesive, Kitfox uses Hysol 9460 but they are the only place I can really find it, What other structural adhesive would you advise or should I just order the Hysol

Looking good mister! I think it would be fine in deep powder, but one track, or branch, or anything under the snow and yer fully FUBAR. The issue with normal floats is the deep Vee in the bottoms. They are a bitch in deep snow, and wont take the abuse of hitting trees or rocks under the snow, can they be used, yes, has it been done, hell yeah, I know lots of guys that take off the water and land on glaciers etc.. is it really safe... nope. That is why I like my 15' X 23" flat bottom inflatables!

    Nate's Pics
Anyway, here is a few pictures of flying around. The first is the Searey. Definitely very different than any aircraft I have been in. I have not flown it yet but have done some taxing around. It is weird to be able to reach out the side and touch the ground. It should be alot of fun once it's ready to go.
The other pictures are from summer 2008. My brother and I went up to the headwaters of the Skwentna river to scout out a spot for a packraft trip. We weren't able to make the trip but it was fun to scout it out. Hopefully we'll make it next summer.
I'll post some more pictures when I get back to my laptop. Anyway, enjoy!

No, I don't think so. The "boat hull" is thin, @ 1/8 inch. I don't think
it would take much abuse. I even wonder abour rough water.

Could an Avid Amphibian (Catalina) be operated off it's belly in deep snow?

I saw a video of Kenmore planes on straight floats (not just your Full Lotus inflate-o-floats, Leni) being operated off snow, once.

Would this stress the hull too much? Could a sacrificial wear surface be added to the bottom?

Just thinking outside the box, a little...

  23. flattie45 added a post in a topic Fish Creek Lakes trip

I put my 140 on skis and picked up my dad from One Stone Lake on the 3rd. During the snowstorm they had 4 1/2 feet (!) of snow in a 24 hour period. Needless to say, they were housebound for a couple days. The day after they tried to get moving but the snowmachine would only make it 2 or 3 feet before burying itself. A couple friends were able to make it over the next day and help put in a strip on the lake. By the time I made it out the snow had settled to about three feet.
    Nice pics Leni.

I spent a few days up past skwentna at Fish Creek Lakes.. Damn nice lodge at Fish Creek Lodge Winter rates are rooms or cabins 75 night per person including meals. As the days are kinda short right now, long flights mean over night trips for me. Anyone up for invading a lodge for a day or two? I was up last week and there was 29" of new snow with more on the way, so make sure you have your skis on.

  25. akflyer added a post in a topic Joannes High EGT's

Did you check the connections on the EGT probes? You should have a set of wires coming off the back of the gauge, then the thermocouples plug into that wire. Make sure those connections are good. I had one set drive me nuts, and even though the plugs looked good, I was getting high and erratic EGT readings... turned out the extension wire was hosed up. I learned this after changing probes and gauges twice.
