500 and a thousand would be a god send sometimes... the flight up to the cabin I was down to less than 100 and 200' the trees were about 50' off my wing tips and it was hard to see them at times..... dumb people sometimes do dumb things... especially when there is a soon to be Ex involved and you are getting the hell away from her

I got a quote from avemco. They wanted 1600 on wheels or skis, 5200 on floats.. for liability only. This was with 1600 hrs tail wheel and 400 hrs in type.

SWEEEEEEETT! Been inthe 40s and raining here, I only got in a couple quick flights so far this week... Yesterday and to riding the mountains on the snomachines... would have been epic snow, but it was mixed rain and snow all day with EXTREMELY flat light conditions. at times, on flat and level ground it felt like you were moving even with the sled shut off... not good for being in the mountains!

Great pictures. The rock outcroppings are really amazing! I wonder how they were formed?

I got my insurance through EAA. I forget the actual carrier at the moment, but it was $700 for the year on my Kitfox as a low time tail wheel pilot for liability only. They required 5 hours of dual in type to carry me, but did insure those 5 hours when I listed my instructor as a 2nd pilot. (He has 1600+ hours in type.)

Come renewal time next August, I am going to investigate putting on some hull insurance. I should have plenty of PIC time to make this more reasonable. They wanted over $1200 for the hull insurance with 10 hours of PIC time.

Here are some pictures from 2005. My little brother and I packed up my Cessna 140 and headed for Kotzebue. We departed Merrill Field, stopped in Skwentna for fuel and food and made our way through Rainy Pass. Beautiful weather. We refueled in McGrath (85 degrees on the ground!) and continued west. We camped in Unalakleet and the next day made the two hour flight to Nome, where we stayed the night with a friend. About an hour north of Nome is the Serpentine Hot Springs. It was a pretty low ceiling when we reached the springs, I was about ready to turn back when we spotted the airstrip. There was already two people there, one in a C-185 and the other with a Lake amphib. The airstrip is about 1000 feet long and dirt, not what I think of as prime Lake territory, but Ed said it did alright. We stayed for two days, hiking around and enjoying the springs. It is a pretty cool landscape with large rock outcroppings and small herds of caribou wandering around.
After Serpentine we made our way to Kotzebue. We stayed overnight with a pilot my dad used to fly for in the 60's. He gave us coordinates to a landing spot at the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes, about 100 miles east of Kotzebue. We took off, stopping in Kiana for fuel ($7/gal). We landed at the dunes and spent almost the entire night running around and exploring. The dunes cover about 25 square miles. The sand is a little course but pretty amazing considering it is above the Arctic Circle. The next day we departed for Galena but ran into some low clouds. We made our way back to Kotzebue, arrived SVFR, refueled and took off for Galena, stopping in Huslia to throw 5 gallons in the tanks. We landed in Galena, made camp and headed for the bar. Quite depressing. We we amped up about this little adventure we were on, and everybody else is staring into their beers, with one guy playing some Johnny Cash songs on his guitar very poorly. We headed back for camp in a cloud of mosquitoes. We departed fairly early, headed east along the Yukon towards Tanana. We were bucking a strong headwind so we turned south towards McGrath. Forty minutes later we ran into a wall of smoke and headed back to Galena to refuel. Once back in the air, we fought the headwind to Tanana, threw 5 gallons in the tanks and made our way to Fairbanks. We had a late lunch with another brother, refueled and headed south along the highway. We stopped at the Summit airstrip to refuel and stretch our legs and made the last leg towards home. We landed back at Merrill Field about 11:30. The last day, from Galena to Anchorage, was nine hours. I don't know how many of you have been in a 140, but nine hours is long, long, long time. But it was fun. For the whole trip we covered about 2100 miles in 20+ hours. We saw a goodly portion of Alaska (there is still lots more!), and it is always fun to fly someplace new. Anyway, enjoy the pictures.
    -Nate

Mine moves a ton too Randy. Helps to smooth it out at lower rpms. Wide open it should not move much unless you have a unbalanced prop.

    Engine Mounts
I have a question on engine mount movement,I have a upright 582 mounted on a plate with 4 rubber mounts. It sure seems like there is a lot of movement when I grab a hold of gearbox and move up and down.Is this normal or are the mounts shot? They are used but look to be in good shape.I have never owned a 2 stroke so maybe they are fine.I never measured but I bet I can move the prop hub 1/2 inch or so.Seems like it would be flopping around like a rag doll when you powered up, Im aways off from starting it but guess I will find out. Thanks Randy

    Awesome Video
This video is about a WWII Ace, who after 60 years was reunited with his P-51 Mustang named February. It has some amazing flying video and the commentary is very well done. It's 28 minutes long but worth every minute. I was very moved by this video. Watch it full screen.

    Scud running
I know a 500 foot ceiling and a mile of vis is awesome flying weather for you AK guys but for us California guys who are used to our 300+ days a year of perfect VFR weather it's kind of sporty. I ran around today in some pretty low vis and ceilings. At least I had the pattern all to myself for the first time in a while. Man I love how fast these airplanes slow down!! A guy was doing his run up today and made a comment on the CTAf after I called out departing RWY 25 and on short final for RWY 25 about 30 seconds apart..... 23.2 hrs and counting...getting closer to that magical 40 hour mark.

headed up to go snowmachining today but got turned around by rain and glare ice, with the mounains hiding in some big black clouds... now it's time to relax with a few and salvage the rest of the day.

    Merry Christmas to all

Yes the fuse was painted in Aerothane and there is not much you can do with it. I had my latex matched to the Randolph Insignia white..it's a perfect match. Someday I'll recover the fuse but it looks great for now. In fact I got some compliments on it today at another airport I flew to.

So your A&P friend did dope on the wings and h-tail, but you did the latex on the fuselage? Man, that's a shame.

It's Randolph Butyrate. MEK will wipe it off like water unfortunately.

Be damn careful and test in a small place first.. may be able to hit it with a scotch bright pad to take the overspray off too.... I would go down to the street corner, find a couple rattle can artists, buyem a case of paint and turn them loose on his plane...

If the paint is over latex, it will be easy to clean it up, almost nothing will remove dried latex, wipe it off with some MEK or better yet get your Hanger mate to do it for you for being so stupid and inconsiderate.

Slow flight video and some random pics
Went flying today after my trip to trashcanistan. We had some decent wind so I screwed around doing some slow flight and took a short video. I probably could have gotten the ground speed a bit lower but didn't feel like stalling with the camera in my hand.

    Slow flight video

    Here's a couple random pics

    105mph groundspeed going downwind

Kind of a cool sunset shot

Running 1050 wide open on my guage. Thinking of dropping the main jet one.
