Got rid of the boot for a lace up brace I can wear inside my regular boots... I would have been in big trouble if I would have had to pack a runway... have I ever said how much I love my floats

So, you were able to fly with the "boot" on your ankle or did you take it off?

Bet that would have hurt like a mother snowshoeing a runway...

Yesterday I took a little 60 mile flight through the mountains to go meet up with some friends who were up snow machining. The area they were riding got dumped on with about 3-4' of fresh fluffy powder Tuesday night. I landed out on a small lake and am very glad I had the floats on cause I would still be there trying to dig out and pack down a runway. As it was, it was touchy coming out even after I made a few loops around the lake and layed down a good set of tracks to try and take off from. Deep powder and 4,500' elevation dont make for stellar performance!

I have had several different helmet cams and they all get the prop arc, boomerang, squiggly shit going. My normal good video cam does fine shooting through the prop, but something in these helmet cam sensors really dont like the prop arcs. I have found that at certain RPM it will be fine, but above or below that you just get a shit picture.

I went flying yesterday and left my good still cam at home so I took pics with my cell phone.. I will post one of each below and you can tell me which camera took which pic....

I was going to ask, Leni, which one you had...

I have this one. Also has no monitor to see what you have recorded. And, gives that weird "boomerang" effect when shooting through the prop.

I'm really thinking of updating to this one.

    Joey,

That is the cam that I have...the one that got my crash video I like it for the vid quality etc, but it does not have an onboard screen, so you mount it and hope for the best when you do get to download to the computer or TV.

Where did you fly today ?
I will tell you, last weekend was the best ski flying I have ever done around here. 6 hrs. of pure enjoyment. Rebuilt my heater fitting, with clear skies and mild temps, 25 degree's, it was a joy to fly in my Avid. There is enough snow around now that you can land just about any place you want. Because of the heavy wet snow that we got during Christmas it has not had a chance to blow. Did mostly local cruising. Looking for deer, turkeys, coyotes ect. Did fly the Mn. river valley for a while. Check out the video on Utube. "Avid Flyer Ski Plane on a river run".
Landed in a field to take on more fuel.

    Hi Doug,

Ron at Ram seems to be a good guy. I got my dual ignition distributor setup, alternator and serpentine drive pullies and dual radiators from him. He was good about switching out the ignition system when I was having trouble with it. I was on the phone with him quite a bit and he was always patient and helpful.

I like the Sube motor and sure hope it is not too heavy to keep the plane from performing well. I am looking for an honest 100hp with real torque. I thought about the VW, and Honda but the Sube's seem to be the most common alternative for the Avid type airframe. The Rotax 912S is no doubt the lightest 100hp 4-stroke but I just can't stummac the price. The Jabaru seemed to work best with shorter props so didn't seem to be the best fit for STOL. the Corvair might be good but I was already commited to building the Sube when I started hearing more about the William Winn engines. The reason I originally bought the Fat Avid frame was so I could put a Sube on without adding lead to the tail. I was looking at sending my Avid to Airdale to get it stretched but Steve talked me into the Fat Avid as a better alternative. He was absolutely right; the room in the Fat Avid is amazing compared to my Mk IV.

The new gear is actually 5 1/2" taller than the Airdale WIB gear. I have the Airdale gear on my Avid and used it to develop the jig for this gear. The width of the gear is the same as the Airdale gear and the position of the wheels but I increased the height and widened the top to connect to the airframe at 3 points. I also increased the tubing diameter by one size since all of the tubes are longer by quite a bit. The reason it may not look as tall is because the tailwheel is sitting on a 5 Gal can in the pictures and I only have the 21" tires on it. I places the bottom of the door frame about waist high in the front (I am 6'-1").

I got the seats from the aviation departiment in Walmart. You guessed it, they are boat seats, I took them off of the frame and tossed it, then built a set of rails for the bottoms with cutouts that hook over the seat frame tubes and screwed these to the bottom of the seat bases so you can move them forward and back by hooking them in different cutouts. I drilled the Airdale seat back frames and screwed the seat back cushions to them so they adjust with the pins as intended. Other than a lot of time messing around to get it to work right if cost me less than $40 each and they are pretty darn comfortable. It left about 4 or 5" between the seats and I plan to mount my intercom there.
They are easily removable so I can lay out full length from the cargo area to the seats and sleep in the plane. I intend to build a light frame to bridge the truss tube behind the seats so I have a flat area to lay a pad.

I have enjoyed looking at your pictures and posts. It is great to be able to see how you have solved problems and answered questions. With Jack and I located close together it has been a great help to be able to bounce ideas off of each other and to help out with the work where it has taked an extra set of hands. I think I am mostly on the receiving end though. I sure appreciate all of Jacks help and the help and advice of everyone on this forum. Thanks.

    1. B-17

    2. B-24

    3. B-26 (Twin Engine)
Duncan would offer a hint on #3: There is only one flying example left and it used to come to OSH every year and they mostly flew in the Pacific.

    4. Duncan would require a guess before he gives a hint for #4.

Looking for 4-engine WWII bombers. (We both failed #4, too.)

The photo is a Stinson, correct. The round tank behind the cabin is hooked to the engine but not part of the fuel or oil system. It is about 12" in diameter and maybe 12" tall. It's lightweight like a coffee can.

During the whole conversation with Duncan, I couldn't help remembering the conversations with the WASP ladies. A truly amazing man.

    Hey Joey-

Sounds like quite a guy, this Duncan fellow. It is such a shame his generation is almost all lost. I love hearing the old flying tales and amazing personal stories from older aviators, particularly the WWII stuff, that's why we always get together with the WASPS each year. And I will agree Larry is pretty darn good with his own aviation and history knowledge. Sitting together on the flight line at OSH last year with with all sorts of Warbirds taxing/flying by, I gotta admit, he seemed to know just about all of them. Sounds like you guys had a fun weekend, hope to see you at OSH.

P.S. - on your quiz, I figure everyone knows the B-17 so I'll say it. How about B-24 and B-26? I think there was a British bomber but ?? I have no idea about the round tank but my guess is it was a fuel tank to extend range of a civilian model pressed into military service. From the radial and wing I'd say that may be an early Stinson? How'd I do Larry?

Here's another video camera option, it was posted on the wings (Just A/C) forum.

    Motocam 360

This system allows up to four cameras to record to a remote control/memory unit at once. Pretty cool (if a little expensive) idea.

Joey, the pleasure was all mine to meet you, your lovely bride and your adorable little daughter.

Early on I would have said that seeing the AF Base or your Avid was the highlight, but after meeting and talking to Duncan for a little while, he is tough to beat. What a fascinating guy. How cool was that!

The other tank with the radial engine that I couldn't remember was the M18 Hellcat. (Continental 975-340 hp)

I'll be waiting for you when you want to hit OSH. Just give a shout.

I had the honor of spending all afternoon with AV8ER3400 aka Larry today. He's in Cali visiting family and took time out to come up and see me and my Avid. It was great to get to meet you. We toured the base as well as the local airport. We have a guy on our field in his 90's that has had a lifetime of Aviation. He flew during the war and has lots and lots of cool stuff in his 5 hangars of airplanes. He gave us what he called "Tests" giving us some really cool tidbits on history. Hey Larry.... One more test..... Thanks for dinner and for taking the time to drive up. I think the wife bought the Oshkosh proposal

Who can name four 4 engine bombers that flew in Europe during WWII?

    1.
    2.
    3.
    4.

    Test question #2
Who knows what the round tank behind the back seat in one of these is for?

Did you guys know that Northrop Grumman made canoes or that Continental Radial engines were used in Tanks??

I learned all kinds of stuff hanging out with Duncan Miller today. He is a walking piece of history.

Here's a clip from an AOPA article about him

Out in the center of the California farmland between Sacramento and San Francisco sits Vacaville (that's Spanish for cow town). And at Vacaville's Nut Tree Airport (VCB), there's a man who loves aviation so much he has five hangars full of aircraft ranging from a J-3 Cub to a BT-13 Valiant to a Cessna 182 and C-47 being restored for a museum. Eighty-three-year-old Duncan Miller started flying during World War II, and he still loves to fly. Sport Pilot is going to keep him flying.

About nine years ago, Miller needed a pacemaker. And that meant he also needed a special issuance medical certificate. That special issuance is only good for six months, and it takes the FAA four months to process each renewal. But the FAA will only allow Miller to apply for a renewal three months in advance. So for the past nine years, one month out of every six he's been unable to fly while he waits for the FAA to process his paperwork. "I'd run home every day to check my mailbox," Miller said.

But Sport Pilot will allow Miller to fly his beloved J-3 Cub. Under the rules, if his special issuance medical certificate lapses, he can still fly exercising the privileges of a Sport Pilot certificate with a driver's license, providing that he self-certifies that he is medically fit to fly.

And for Duncan Miller, every afternoon around 5 o'clock there's nothing more that he loves to do than fly his J-3 low and slow around the Vacaville farmland — except for Sunday after church when he opens his hangars for everyone, especially children, to come and see his aircraft.

In photo: 83-year-old Duncan Miller learned to fly during World War II. Today Sport Pilot will allow him to fly his beloved J-3 Cub even though he sports a pacemaker.

Yeah I tried that trick but it didn't work, that's when I started gargling with Jim Beam. You're gonna laugh but in my agony I went online and looked up toothache remedies. There are definitely some doozies but, since tooth pain will bring the biggest, baddest mofo straight to his knees sobbing for a hammer to knock his tooth out, I tried a few. A paste of finely ground cloves and veggie oil packed around the tooth gave relief but damn near made me toss my bourbon. Peanut butter packed between cheek and gum/tooth worked too, something about the oils I guess. Even better was accupressure or reflexology or whatever it's called... just pinch and hold the web between thumb and index finger, thumb on top and positioned just at and toward the base of the index finger joint. Blocks the bad pain energy up one of the main body meridians it said, whatever, it really worked for me and repeatedly too. Best has been my 4x4x4 regime with periodic warm salt water/baking soda/hydrogen peroxide swishing/gargle and accupressure as needed in between. Gotta say I'm not feeling much pain at the moment and after a snort or two of laughing gas for conscious sedation at the 8:00am dental appt tomorrow I hope all I end up with is a bad hangover. They can keep the tooth.

Randy- that's a great looking project! I can't tell you how many times I've been around and around on engine choice but I believe the Sube is a good choice for this airframe. Actually, I was pretty hot on one of Ron's FI engines for a long while myself, doesn't hurt that RAM is only a 5hr drive from me. Did you build your new gear from scratch or beef your old gear? Doesn't look quite as tall as the Airdale W.I.B. gear, maybe it's just the pic angle. Curious where you found the seats too, I tried a pair from a boat outlet but needed more room between the seat cushions for my console and center throttle quadrant. After hearing what you and Jack had to do to fit your existing wings, very glad I didn't have to deal with that. So far, have to say, I'm pretty happy how complete and easy my full kit is going together. How fast is something altogether different tho...

old trick... crush one of the ibuprofen and put the powder on the tooth and gum.. Then back it with your shots.. maybe a few more per hour are in order to adequately dull the pain

Well, believe me when I say I'm commiserating with your pain today. Cracked a molar Sat. night somehow and been on a steady course of (4) ibuprofen + (4) shots every (4) hours since. Figures that banks aren't the only businesses closed for MLK day... grrr

Vid brought back some old memories as my last sled had only two throttle settings also... closed and wide open. Tended to be an issue when bar hopping on narrow, winding wooded trails in the Adirondacks. Sold it before I killed myself thankfully but I sure do miss that adrenaline rush!
