Mine does the same thing..it's a trade off... Flight hands off in the pitch and have a slight left roll. If I pull on a little flap then I have to hold slight back pressure but it does not roll. It's a trade off I guess. I did put two turns in on my Rod end and it seemed to help some. That was the only thing I got done on my plane this weekend. The rest of the time I spent flying!! It was way too nice to work on it.

Thanks for the info. I have the Matco on my work bench but I want to weigh the two before I swap them so I can redo my W&B. I think the Matco might actually be lighter even though it's bigger. I flew about 6 approaches to that spot and drug it once before I landed it. Took me a little while to get up the balls to do it. It had a pretty decent uphill slope and the approach had a peak you had to clear and then dive down so to maximize the length. Not totally committed but def a little pucker factor. I was pretty proud of myself considering I have 30 hours in an Avid and 42 hours tail dragger time. I am def going to need to upgrade to disk brakes though if I really want to get into some short stuff. I can get off a lot shorter than I can stop right now.

Joey- pretty neat! Are those the coastal mountains NW of you or the big ones to the east?

I love the pics you guys post, it is truly breathtaking scenery. I certainly see the appeal and I'm sure flying in that unlimited natural beauty changes the inner person for the better, not to mention continually tests your piloting skills.

definitely need a report on that tail wheel. I am thinking the 8" needs to go on my plane this summer if I go back to wheels! Off airport is where it is at with these birds! once you really get comfortable with it, you will be amazed at the places you can take these little planes! One thing I would keep a close eye on is the weld on the gear where the bungies wrap around. The cross leg that ties into the gear is where I have seen all the failures. Two on my plane and one on my brothers. The pic shows the failure on my brothers gear that was the exact same on mine twice (that is how I ended up with the plane after it went on its back!)

Few pics from yesterday... Once again I left the good digital in the truck so these are pics from the video cam. I need to get a good camera and just leave it in the plane! The pic of my plane on the ground was on a ridge above lost lake. Little shorter than I thought, but the good news is you can fall off the end of a short strip in the mountains and gain flying speed on the way down

Looking good, Joey. You'll soon be an off-airport addict.

Be sure to give a PIRep on that new tailwheel, ASAP!

  9. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic 16-Hour E-LSA Class

Hello again everyone. I can't argue with the semantics of 84KF. He is correct on that. BUT, here is the story on the classes:

16 Hour Class: If you own an airplane that is certificated as an E-LSA and you successfully complete the 16 hour class, the certificate that you receive allows you to apply to the FAA to be named as a legal inspector for that aircraft. This allows you to do the condition inspections and sign it off in the aircraft log. No A&P needed.

The class completion certificate is permanent and will allow you to apply for this inspection right on any E-LSA that you own, now or in the future. If/when you sell the aircraft your inspection right on that aircraft no longer applies.

Anyone can do maintenance on an aircraft certificated as E-LSA. Anyone. Only an A&P or the owner of the aircraft who holds this inspection authorization from the FAA, via the 16 hour class, may do the condition inspection and sign it off as in safe flying condition.

120 Hour Class: If you successfully complete the 120 hour class you can then apply to become, in effect, an A&P with IA privileges for all S-LSA and E-LSA certificated aircraft. It will allow you to work, for hire, on these aircraft. Maintenance and inspection operations.

Not amateur built experimental or certified aircraft that qualify as LSA, only S-LSA and E-LSA certificated aircraft.

You can read and interpret these laws as you want, but this is how the FAA (and the EAA) are applying them.

    Hi Leni,

I just saw your post. Glad to see you got out and enjoyed the perfect weather, short as it was. Sounds like you pushed to the edge of the next storm front today.

I never have gone over the top to PWS in the Avid. It would be nice to fly it with a partner; those passes and snowfields can close up fast and tight. Have you ever taken your plane to Valdeze to see the short field competition?

I'll keep watching so let me know when you are planning to head this way again.

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for the pictures. I thought the lake sounded familiar; is it about 35 miles northeast of Talkeetna between the Sheep River and Iron Creek? I have been up there before and passed about 25 miles from it yesterday. Those mountains are beautiful and great flying when the wind is not a factor. (I wish it was always like yesterday) They can create some scary turbulence when it is windy though. I approach them cautiously.

Alaska is just a great place to fly; probably the best place in the word in my limited opinion. It is incredibly beautiful and almost unrestricted flying. You can land just about anywhere you want and think you can make it. It is pretty cool and ominus when you shut down the engine to hear nothing but nature's silence; the wind, river, etc.; but nothing human except you. An amazing feeling to know that you are depending on your plane to get you back out, wherever you are.

If you get back up this way, be sure to let me know so we can try to hook up. Nothing better than shooting the bull with another Avid addict, and maybe get a chance to do some flying.

I attached some more pics of flying last summer, just for fun.

Hey Randy, I did not make it up to the lodge. Lance called and he had to go back to willow for a week Made a couple trips to lost lake and today headed up to Nelli juan. I was going to drop over into Kings bay in PWS and see if I could find a trail to take snowmachines in there, but the fog cut us off and made us turn around.. Was a nice day to fly thought the mountains though!

First real X country trip report!
I took advantage of the good weather today and flew my first Cross Country. I flew 80 Statue Miles to a Fly in Restraunt for breakfast. On the way back I played the whole way. Ended up logging 3.0 hours. I averaged 80mph on the ground speed running 5800 rpms. Looks like I'm burning right around 5gph at that power setting. I got just a small taste of what this bird is capable of today. I can't wait to keep expanding the envelope. Only 9 more hours till I'm out of Phase I. I have not flown 40 hours in the past three years I can't believe I've flown off my time in 4 months. Here's the pics!!

On the ramp at Nancy's Restraunt in Willows, CA

    Headed back

    Playing with the camera

My first real off airport experience. This was a ridgetop out in the Boonies. Plenty of length and width. I was stopped within 200 ft but it was uphill.

Here's a shot of it on the lift. I finally remembered to take a shot.

Gteat pictures, gotta love those ski planes. I was in Alaska two years ago in March. Did some ski flying with Don Lee in his Pacer. Flew in the Talkeetna range. Landed on Rainbow Lake where Don has a trappers cabin. It was awesome flying those 2 days. The same weather you had, clear and no wind. I got a small taste of what you guys get every day up there. Flying up that drainage makes a flatlanders ass pucker real tight. Sure would like to go back up and hang with you guys for a couple of days. Mark

What an awsome day to fly today! You just can't beat winter flying; severe clear and light winds. Plenty of snow and a good set of skis means you don't have to wait to find a relief spot. I flew north up the Talkeetna Mts, west across the Big Su River and up the Tokasitna River, South along the Peters Hills to the mouth of the Kahiltna glacier, south to Mt Yenlo and on to Fish Lakes Creek. I looked for you Leni but didn't see any Avids. I am not sure which of the lakes the lodge is on so I will have to get some directions from you or be sure you are there next time you head out that way. What frequency do you monitor/talk on out there? 122.9 or something different like 123.45?
Hoping for more days like this; I will be trying to stuff a cople of fives on the wings to extend my range. Attached a few pics of the flight. That Mt. McKinley is one big rock!

N84KF is in the home garage for the winter. Total time is about 95 hrs or so, running strong, and (was) making better landings too. ( )

Gettin' ready to go to Key West Fl. soon, then off to Fortaleza, Brazil to soak up some sun. When I get back, it will be time to return to a airport hanger for the "season".

    Love all the new "Emotions".....

    Joey,

The new TW looks nice. I look forward to hearing how you like it.

My Avid has a little tendency to fly with the left wing low when the flap lever is fully down but it goes away if I pull the flaps slightly on. It doesn't sound like it is a pronounced as yours. I have never botthered to try to tweak the wing any to take it out because it was easy to correct with the slight movement of the flap lever. I will be moving my wings to the Fat Avid this summer and will have to rig them then so your findings will be very useful. Thanks for posting them.

Leni asks....."Is yours registered as an LSA...?"

reply is... "....the 1050 model IV (yellow one) is registered E-LSA..."

Could someone show me where on an aircraft registration or application is the designation for E-LSA....,
It may be certificated as a E-LSA, but it is not "registrated" as such. (Note the word "certificated"...not "certified"

I know...., I'm nitpicking, but proper nomenclature is critical...........

Leni....don't make me put my foot.....

DAmn ...it feels good to bitch about something again.

BTW...., for LSA airplane class..., doesn't one need the 120 hr course in (basic) maintenance training before one takes the 16 hr LSA airplane "Inspection" course???

    Read here: http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&sid=04e99640259d7ba6cd59e176e166f988&rgn=div8&view=text&node=14:2.0.1.1.4.5.1.5&idno=14

Hopefully be a busy weekend for 279AF. Going to rerig my Flaperons back to where I had them. I talked to Dean Wilson today and he confirmed shortening the rod to lift a heavy left wing.Hopefully this fixes my roll issue. If not then back to the drawing board. Then I'm going to do the gap seals and finally install my new Matco 7" TW. Hopefully it will release just a tad earlier and I won't have to mess with steering arms. The arms on the Matco look a lot easier to mod than the Maule. And there's always the alternate arms that release at like 23 degrees instead of 41.

    Ewwwww Ahhhhh
