You need to take a trip out here.

We have a father/son CFI team of seaplane qualified instructors that can make this happen. Steve (the dad) is a LS-Seaplane Instructor and Brian (the son) is a "regular" CFI with every possible add on rating you can get. I'm sure that Paul S. (you know who I mean) could be able to whistle up a plane to use.

    Joey-- ( I got your text. Sorry I didn't reply, yet. )

The Kitfoxes use a 8" aluminum ATV wheel with tabs welded on the back that mount the brake disc. The caliper reaches from the ID to the OD (backwards from most applications). I'm headed over to the airport today and will send you a pic of the setup. I have my gear all reassembled with the new prototype "ski axles" installed.

Brett still supplies the 6" setup for Avids, but we were talking about looking for a more reasonably priced option of going with an 8" wheel. At the time we still had one of my Kitfox wheels on the bench for ski fitting. So we were using that as a idea starter...

Saw that..too bad they are over $300 a wheel!! Do you have any pics or specs on your wheels? I know a few machinist that could prob do something like this for me. I'm curious what brand of wheels you used and what you used for a rotor and caliper.

Matco sells 8" wheels and brakes. I had mine custom made from ATV wheels.

    Leni and Snowmachine Gang
OK, at this point I don't have a lot of info, but
from hearsay and folks that have talked to someone on
the trip, things didn't go well. The ride started yesterday
probable @ daylight. Weather predicted 3-5 feet for Seward.
Some injuries that needed medavacked but it was whiteout
in the snow storm, "o" visability. All trapped on the mt.
Seems some went off a cliff in the storm???
Leni is not one of the boys hurt, I talked to Leni's
brother and Leni had been home to get parts for Mark's
machine and went back up the mountain. A couple others
Have ridden out also today to get stuff and gone back.
    More when I hear

    "Nice Hover"
We had wind blowing 90 degrees to the runway yesterday. It was blowing about 12 at the runwa and quite a bit stronger at pattern altitude. I was out practicing my X wind landings. On one approach a 182 was in the run up area. He called me to say he would wait for me to land. I was like go ahead I'm just hang out here on base. I pulled on some flap turned base and did some slow flight. My ground speed 10 mph. I just sat there on base the whole time he did his run up and checklist. He came back over the CTAF and said " Nice hover what is that thing?" I was giggling like a school girl. My last landing Iflew down the side of the runway till I was almost abeam with the taxi way I usually exit on. I turned hard left and touched down right on the edge of the runway... I prob could have gotten it stopped in the width the runway. What a fun day. I was having an absolute blast. Did 8 landings in a 1.0 and got in some great X wind practice. 6 hours left till I'm done with my Phase I!!

I'm currently running the 8.00X6 Carlisle Tires. I found a site with these 21X12-8 NK N800 SLICK TREAD 2 PLY Made by Nankang for like 33" a piece. Sounds like a lot of guys are running them. Is going to a 8" wheel a pain for finding brake parts?

The need for two SP-CFIs qualified with the added endorsement compounds the problem. At the moment there's just not enough SP-CFIs and finding even one is an issue. First you need to find a SP-CFI qualified light-sport aircraft owner willing to train you in their personal aircraft (one guy does not a typical flight school make), or willing to train you in your own homebuilt or S-LSA. That's a problem because most CFIs won't step foot in an experimental aircraft, and most flight schools hire Comml/CFIs because a student's dual instruction toward the Sport Pilot rating can be applied toward higher ratings only if the instruction was given by a CFI (instruction given by a CFI-SP counts toward the sport pilot rating only). Then you gotta find another SP-CFI with the endorsement desired to do the proficiency check... in the other SP-CFIs personal plane!? I must tip my hats to the SP-CFI aviation enthusiasts taking all the trouble to make it happen. They are not doing it as an enterprise, rather as personal satisfaction for the promotion of light-sport aviation. I sure hope more follow their lead.

One more note about LS seaplane flying - I spoke with my LS CFI today and he added that there needs to be a second CFI to basically act as an examiner. Not an FAA person, just a second CFI to sign off that the training was satisfactory This will allow legal LS seaplane operations.

    Doug, Larry,
Thanks for the input. Your answers were as I thought it would be. Get the training and the endorsement.
I think more questions like this should be discussed with people having the PP license wanting to just fly as a SP. That's my case, but I might get a 3rd class physical one more time just to make flying in a Citabria simpler.
    Thanks again,
    Jack

Larry- regulations for SP instructors are just as stringent as for PP instructors it would appear. Unfortunately, there are only a tiny fraction of SP flight instructors compared to CFIs. For ex., I have had -zero- luck trying to find an SP flight instructor who has received HIS Airplane, Single-engine sea endorsement from an authorized instructor and is therefore able to provide me with a SP SES proficiency check.

    Jack -
As I understand it, the holder of a Sport Pilot Certificate will need an endorsement for BOTH > or < 87 knots CAS. You will get one on your initial proficiency test depending upon the aircraft you train in, however, you will need to get another endorsement if you want to operate as PIC of the other. The 'SLOW CAS' endorsement exception appears to be if you have previously logged flight time as pilot in command of an aircraft with a VH less than or equal to 87 knots CAS prior to March 3, 2010.

The holder of a Sport Pilot Certificate will still need an endorsement for each Category (Airplane) and Class (Single-engine land or Single-engine sea, etc).

According to my local LSA CFI, a float "rating" is only a sign off from a qualified instructor (he is qualified, but I don't know what qualifies him) when operating as a Sport Pilot.

So-- That being said, I take it (and he agrees) that as a PP with only a SEL (& SEL-I), if I am operating my LS eligible aircraft within the limitations of a Sport Pilot rating, all I would need to fly it with floats is a sign off from him.

To fly it as a PP I would need to get the seaplane rating, with all of it's associated red tape.

My take is that if you are only operating off land, you would just have really inefficient landing gear. No sign-offs or anything required.

@Doug - I've considered updating the lights in my wingtips for LEDs eventually. Funds are tight now, being newly self employed... The lights I have now draw quite a bit. There is a low and high beam so with everything lit they are very bright but quickly overpower the wimpy 912 alternator and my small battery. Doing the wig-wag at that time, too, is mandatory, IMO.

@Leni - You must have super neck muscles to have all this shi--stuff on you head when you go sledding. Camera, light, pointy spike like the red baron...

  17. C5Engineer added a post in a topic About at wits end rigging flaperons

When I went to pull the bolt the to adjust the rod end there was a ton of pressure on it and I had to whack it out with a punch. I went one turn and had to have buddy wiggle the wing tip to get the bolt back in. It didn't really do much so I went one more turn. This time it was able to wiggle the bolt out with my fingers and there was a noticeable difference. I went one more turn and it was better yet so I went one more turn for a total of 4 turns and the bolt slid right in easily. It now just barely rolls right instead of left so next time I fly I'm going to back it back out a half of a turn. What a difference it made! It is easier to make a coordinated turns to the right now too. I did some stalls both power on and off and it didn't want to drop a wing at all.

Now though when I pull on a few degrees of flap it wants to roll right which makes sense now why when it was rolling left it would stop when I pulled on a little flap. I'm guessing that my flaps must not be coming on perfectly symmetrical. It's not a huge issue but I often pull on a little bit of flap to get rid of some reflex and decrease the stick forces when I'm canyon flying or landing in gusty winds. Anyways with 5 degrees of reflex and 5800 rpm it will fly hands off which is what I was looking for. Like I said at 5 degrees the stick pressure is a little heavy but just a small crack of flaps gives me a slight nose down trim and gets rid of the forces.

I'm not sure I understand the question(s) but this might help.... (61.303) http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&sid=b681abce8672d01ae48644d7f52417e7&rgn=div8&view=text&node=14:2.0.1.1.2.10.1.2&idno=14

Leni's the float guru, but according to below, "Single engine - sea" is a Airplane "CLASS" and....."ratings are placed on a pilot certificate (other than student pilot) when an applicant satisfactorily accomplishes the training and certification requirements for the rating sought"

    http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&sid=78ab110d844bef951447ed07db369ecc&rgn=div8&view=text&node=14:2.0.1.1.2.1.1.5&idno=14

I have a Private, SEL cert., and expired medical. My KF5 meets the definition of LSA, so I can fly under the Sport Pilot rules..... eg.up to 10,000 msl (or 2000 agl above 10,000 msl), no night flight. The Private Pilot cert, (and Recreational Pilot cert) all top a Sport Pilot cert. so no additional endorsements are necessary.
I can say... "been there.., done that..."

But I cannot just go fly a LSA on floats since I don't hold the "rating" "Single engine -sea."

Update: Could I fly a LSA on floats......??,if I only takeoff and land on terra firma???
    Leni??

This is the light I use. Works great and is damn bright when looking at it from the air and ground.. when you cant see anything else on my plane, you can see that landing light a long ways away! The amp draw is what convinced me to spend the $ on it. I also got one for a helmet light on my sled. Best damn helmet light I have used! Really lights up the trees for good night riding

Hey Russ - how are the umbrella drinks and bikini watching this year? Get that TW endorsement done yet?

Larry - if I'm not mistaken the Avid manual says any scratch that catches a fingernail AND is within 18" of the spar root attach bolt/pin holes or lift strut rivet is prohibited because of potential stress riser. Was OK to polish out very minor shallow scratches along the entire spar, but I can't recall the max depth at which that is no longer recommended. At any rate, even at the tip location shown, it goes against my grain. It looks like they've removed close to 50% of the spar integrity and there's a crap load of rivet and nutplate holes in the remainder. I dunno?

I do like the LED landing/taxi lights and I'll probably go the easy way with one in the lower cowl. But I like that wig wag recognition too. If you want to keep your landing and recognition lights separate you could do a pair of 15 lamp LED strobes with a wig wag controller for about $60 here > http://www.mpglighting.com
