10,000 you were running way rich and leaving lots of power on the table. I have the Arctic Sparrow in flight, and one turn on them is about equal to changing one clip position on the mid range needle. Even at 5000' and say 5800 RPM I can crank it in 2 or 3 turns to keep the EGTs the same and keep the fuel burn under control. you just have to remember to crank them back out on the way down or look for a place to land real quick when the whirly gig quits turning. I dont think I have had mine over 6000 yet and that was only to clear a mountain cause I wanted to go direct and not through the pass. Me thinks I will take her up and see what I max out at when I get home this time.

    Cool vid and pics too

That's too KOOL, Joey!! Gettin' high on Avid!

I was doing a bit of formation work yesterday, I was part of a high speed flight of three (1-Champ, 1-Chief, 1-Kitfox) to a local grass (snow) airport - 68C, look them up - for their weekly Friday lunch-feed.

(Funny how a lot of the local flying here revolves around food...)

Joey's met me, he knows I'd never pass up a good meal...

Though a six-pack of blonds is a good topic, especially with photos, back to the one intended...

I put another 2 hours on today to match the 2 yesterday and 2.5 on Thursday ski flying. Went to a local chili feed today then hopscotched my way home, from one little private strip to another. About an even dozen landings.

Lots of fun. Too much fun to remember to take photos or video...

10,000 and climbing and some formation flying
This morning I filled my tanks full put on my winter clothes and took off headed for 10,000ft. I took off at 120ft MSL with an OAT of 10C. I set my power at 6000rpm and 60mph and I leveled off at 10,000ft 26 minutes later. I was still climbing at 300-400fpm and was not even wide open. I was impressed. I did some left and right turns and it felt solid. It didn't feel like it was hanging at the prop at all. My EGT's were at about 1000 degrees and I taped off half my radiator before taking off to keep my water temp up.

After a long descent at power to keep the temps up I landed and met up with a guy from another forum in his Rans S-7S. We did some formation flying. This is the first time I've done this and had a blast. We played for about an hour and then he headed home. Here's some pics. It's hard to tell but look at the littlest hand on my altimeter. My GPS was reading 10.2K.

    The Lake was socked in

This was landing out in front of my hangar when I got back. Not sure I would like being at the mercy of the wind.

My buddy in his very nicely equipped S-7

He had a killer camera. I can't wait to see the pics he got of me.

Congrats on the Avid Jezz and welcome to the addicts club. Sounds like your next accessory needs to be a set of skis .

There is probably some effect on cruise speed but I did this over a matter of years so I didn't really notice; and what I was looking for was the ground performance. My cruise is about 82 mph with the 26" tires. I think that if your cruise is already slow, they have less effect than if you had your plane and prop set up for higher cruise speeds like 100 mph; it would probably affect it a lot more at that speed.

I think I screwed up the convention. The tire sizes I used were 21" tall, 12" wide and 8" diameter rim. I mounted these on 8" diameter x8" wide rims. The 8" wide rims are plenty wide for the 12" wide tires.

The ATV tires that I cut the tread off of were 25" tall x 12" wide x 9" diameter rim. I looked around quite a bit and could never find a 25"x12"x8" tire (until now). That is why I built another set of rims with 9" diameter.

    Joey,
I saw your msg kind of flash on the screen an then it went away. I think you asked which rams I'm using. Mine are MC-4A's if I remember correctly. I have brake pedals on both sides and will have a remote resevior.

I never know if I should congratulate or commiserate when I hear of someone splitting up after such a long time - but if it gives you more time with the Avid then it can only be a good thing methinks! I've spent the last 90 minutes in front of the computer Googling for gift ideas - results I have found the perfect Garmin GPS 196 on ebay and only a day left on bidding ... Ah what the hell, I will buy the 196 as a valentine for the Avid and the Mrs can have a few tea candles scattered around the place for when she comes home tonight (will already be past midnight).

Garmin - $350 (or maybe more if the bidding goes up)
    Tea candles - $5

Yep - I think it says it all! Maybe I can make up the other $345 by having a shower and a shave for when she comes home? Nah, on second thoughts I want to try to upload those pictures. OK, off now to buy the tea candles then!

p.s. How is the snowfall up there in Alaska this season. Here we have had more than in a decade. I went to the airfield today to look at the building I am stealing (part of the old fire brigade garages, so plenty of room for the Avid), the snow depth has already raised about another foot and the clearance machine drivers only work weekdays so airfield closed so I had some fun putting the car sideways on the runway with a couple of students hitching along. Always good fun to show them that its not only the teenagers that can have fun. Temps are way down here too, normally we get a week or two solid below -15C (day and night) with most of the rest of the season about -5C, but this year it was over 2 months below -20C. Global warming perhaps?

Guys, many thanks for the positive words and support!

I have a few pics from when I went to view her, I will post them here when I get back, but that is likely to take me all evening (I am a bit slow on the computer uptake these days), so priorities first ... tomorrow is Feb 14th, time to go out and make a last minute ditch effort look like a years worth of romantic planning.

And Leni, many thanks for the offer of info, it will be gratefully received!

p.s. maybe another thread I should have started yesterday would have read "romantic ideas SOS"

  17. flattie45 added a post in a topic Anybody use the Bully Hawk Soft Start Module?

I just fired up my Searey (912ULS) with the Soft Start Module installed. It definitely makes a difference, but not as much as I thought it would. I'm not sure how it's going to help on shut-down, which is more violent than start-up. But I am glad I bought it. It is supposed to be easier on the gearbox, motor mounts, etc. There must be something to the way the motor mounts are set up on a Searey, it just moves around so much. I don't know of any engine leaving a Searey in flight, so it must be alright (right?).
Mechanically, my Searey is ready to go. I am now waiting on paperwork to fly. Once it's in the air I'll be sure to post some pictures.

When is the tail ski going to be done? I could use one right now. You will learn with wheelskis the the brakes will freeze up. If you are taxing from snow to pavement you will have to get out and brake your wheels loose. If you are landing on pavement after taxing with wheel skis in the snow, be prepaired for a little wheel screech. Wheel skis do build up lots of snow and ice, but I guess there are always trade offs. It is still nice to taxi from your hanger to the snow.

What was the difference in performance between the different sizes? Did you notice any decrease in cruise speeds?

There must be no standard for size labeling of ATV tires.

Mine are labeled as 20x7x8 and they are on 8" diameter (OEM Kitfox) rims.

I would have taken a 25x8x12 as going on a 12" diameter rim.

Jokes aside - These are 12 x 60. The production units will be 14 x 60. We will take your advise for a 72 length option seriously, thanks.

Our next priority is a tail ski which gives a wheel-through type of option or capability...

We also have some ideas on the shape of the plastic to help matters.

    More to come, for sure.

(the button is working properly now. Dunno - might be my antique laptop I'm using...)

Oh, by the way, the 25X8X12 tires work fine on an 8"X 8" wide rim. That is what they are on in the pictures. Offset is 3" outside and 5" inside.

That is great that they are making a 25" X 8" tire now and for $80, what a deal! I have been around this block and spent a lot of money getting to the end (I think...hmm, those 31" Bushwheels are mighty tempting though). I started out with the 8.00 turf tires, then got a set of the KF hubs and built a set of the 8" Douglas ATV rims with tabs welded in for the brake disc and put on a set of the 21X8 slicks. (wow, a great improvement). Then was looking at my 4-wheeler while out hunting one day and thought, why not do the same with 9" wheels, so I cut all the tread off of a set of 25X9 ATV tires and built another set of rims. (Still better!) Then I had the oppourtunity to buy a set of 26 Experimental Bushwheels (lighter construction) for a good price and they are even better yet . My advice; save some money and go for the biggest ones you can afford from the start . I attached some pics of the 21's on my Avid plus, 25's on the Avid with the caribou rack on the wing, and a few of the 26's I run on the Avid now.

For brakes I am installed the matco master cylinders with the remote reservoir and their triple puck brakes with a spacer on the solid side of the caliper so I could run my stock 1/4 " thick discs. They work great with the stock Avid pedals.
