    flapperon foam repair.
I'm rebuilding a KF III that has sat for about 8 yrs. The trailing edge of the flapperons had separated (builder didn't rivet them) and the foam ribs came ungluded. I reglued (hysol) the ribs and TE but I can still feel an area where the skin is not attached to the rib. My thought is to drill a small hole and inject hysol into the area with a sytenge and then pop rivet the hole. Is there a better way to do this ? Also is there foam forward of the torque tube in the flapperon or just the rear ribs ? All and all I don't feel to warm and fuzzy about the flapperons, they feel pretty floppy but I've never had any experience with any not attached to the wing before. any thoughts ?

    thanks,

new ends seals on the crank, and you should be able to inspect the bearings for any signs of rust. The carbs are stupid easy to rebuild, really nothing more than pulling the jets and cleaning them, blowing out a couple passages and slapping them back together. Fuel pump is easy to rebuild also. Just pay attention how you pull it apart, and put the new diaphragms back in the same way. There are lots of good articles on the CPS website and many others that will walk you through this.

while we're on the subject, I have a similar issue. I have a 582 greyhead that has sat for about eight yrs. It has a total of 27hrs. since new. It was completely rebuilt with a new crank and broken in before it sat. It wasn't stored well, basicly just sat on the airplane (KF III) Obviously the all the seals will need to be replaced but what does everyone think about the crank ? How hard is it to rebuild the carbs ? (bing 54s) thanks,

A friend of mine built a flap, on a piano hinge that covers 3/4 of his radiator, hooked to a push-pull cable to the cockpit. He uses this to help regulate engine temp on his 912 powered Kitfox. Something like this may help you. I put duct tape across 2/3 of my radiator in the winter to help increase temperatures, then regulate by running the cabin heater.

    Radiator Shuters
Glad were back up and running now I can ask you guys more questions.I have a radiator that mounts underneath the fuselage on my Skyraider build.A guy told me that I should put shutters on it for winter flying and to prevent cold seizures. What do you guys think?I have only had experiences with Lycomings and Continentals and shock cooling is rare with them if you use a little common sense.I have read if you keep the RPM,s up on final and keep the water circulating you should be ok. My motor is the grayhead so it is more prone to seizures than the new blue head.
    Thanks Randy

Thanks guys! The Mustang was a Thunder Mustang replica. This was not really a Fly-in. In California if you have a plane that is over 35 years old and "display" it 10 times a year you get a huge tax break. They do these display days a lot so they can sign the roster and get their tax break. I think it's nicer just hanging out with pilots than dealing with the public.

Looks like a great fly-in; thanks for sharing the pics. Love those simple airplanes. I think I am more impressed by builders that can keep their airplanes simple than the super high tech glass everything cockpits. Was the Mustang a reproduction kit built one?

It is a lot of fun getting together with other pilots and hangar flying. Like Leni said, we need to have more of those events up here. Looks like we just need to make that happen! Saying that just as I am about ready to take my avid apart and start moving parts over to the Avid +. Jack is going to help me transfer the wings next Sat so I will be without a plane for a while. Will have to make a last flight in the Avid this week.

Nice pics! I really wish we had more flyins around here! There are a couple every year around the state, but nothing like you guys have down south with one going on damn near every weekend.

Put a few hours on my brothers short wing death trap getting my Zodiak and decoys etc from the duck cabin. Was snowing like a sumbiatch at 2500' as I was crossing the inlet yesterday afternoon.. WTF, this is spose to be summer time

    Lincoln CA Airport Day
Flew up to Lincoln this morning to meet the Cub guys. Great bunch of dudes who like flying low and slow. A couple of other interesting things showed up too. I love the old J-3's.. very cool airplanes. Really took me back shooting the shots of them in the grass.

I'm surprised you have been able to fly with the stock spring at all. The stock one I had bent on me the first time I loaded my plane on the trailer to bring it home. I bought a single "universal" spring from Aircrft Spruce and liked the softness of it but it eventially broke on me. I replaced it with the Airdale double spring which works well but is very stiff. I don't think it will ever break though. Id does put a lot of load on the tail structure. I had to repair and rebuild my lower longeron tubes at the spring attach channel a couple of years ago. While I was in there I reinforced the tail structure a little.

    Tailwheel Spring
I've got the stock single spring on my plane. It's only a matter of time before I break it off I'm thinking. I know lots of have upgraded to a double spring set up. I could use some weight on my tail too. I tried calling Airdale but have not hear back yet. Anyone know where I can get a better set up?

Yup Randy the static system is just a few clear tubes coming off the back of the instruments. The filters keep junk out. There are three total.. once for the rate of climb, one for the altimeter, and one for the airspeed. My airspeed is very accurate at cruise speeds. Pretty amazing considering how basic it is.

Looks good Joey,I have mechanical brakes on my Skyraider for now but my goal is to upgrade to hydraulics.I want to first see if I like the way my plane flies before I dump another million dollars into it.Nice sanitary looking job.Is the two fuel filters for the static ports for your instruments?Randy

Leni it's all tubing that Matco sells. From the reservoir to the master cylinders is 1/4" OD and from the Master Cylinders to the Calipers is 1/8" OD line. I think it looks bigger in the pictures than it really is.

My radiator man said if I can come up with workable tanks he can put any size core I want in them, a buddy is going to give me a couple of radiators off a YZ 250 lets see if they are a closer match. by the way that was an ercoupe and a 172 both rent for $75 anhour wet going up tomorrow until our asses get too sore.

I bought my radiator from Kitfox, It was 240.00 plus freight. It looks just like the one from Rotax but almost half the cost. Its 20 1/2 X 5 1/4 X 2.It was built for the 582 or the 912. Randy

You could take it to a radiator shop and have it cut down pretty cheap. I had one built right down the road from my house and I think it was around 125 to 150 bucks, been a few years so I cant remember for sure. Took the guy a day from when I brother dropped off his bent up one (landing gear folded on landing and the radiator was no longer usable) to me picking it up at the shop and having it bolted on.

Mine had right around 121 hrs on it when I got it and it had been sitting under a tarp for a few years out in the elements. when I got it home, it fired right up, but since I was doing a complete rebuild on the plane, I figured what the hell.. new crank and seals just so I knew what I had to start out with in the "new" plane. seals are cheap, bent planes are not. I have pulled the exhaust a few times in the last 150+ hrs and it all looks clean with no carbon build up visible so I have not bothered to pull it down for a de-carbon.

On my brothers engine at about 250 hrs he decided to run some Mercury "power tune" through it. For about 5 minuted there was some really nasty black come out the exhaust, but then it cleaned right up. About 10 hrs later he has to tear it down for other reasons and it was clean as a whistle with NO traces or carbon around the rings or tops of the pistons.

Ya, I was kind of thinking that myself, the core is actually abit smaller but this is the biggest heater core I have ever seen. I looked at a Metro and a Yugo in the junkyard and there radiators were smaller, It looks like its time to lay out some cash. Trying to get my flight lessons and airplane to finish up about the same time looks like flight is going to win and try not to spend too much renting the Ercoupe. The FBO where I am getting my lessons has both a !&@ and an ercoupe both rent for $75 an hour wet. Instruction $25 an hour and I have already finished ground school.
