A glimpse into Dean Wilsons workshop
I had the distinct pleasure of spending an hour in Dean Wilsons workshop today. I'm home visiting in Idaho and he is an old family friend. His current project Curtis Pusher project from the early 1900's. They are at around 5000 hours and counting on this. Every piece was handmade from an incomplete set of plans. The workmanship is amazing. The pics speak for themselves....

Okay, it's settled then. You'll be flying that out to OSH this summer then, RIGHT??

We're all staying at the ultralight area. There's plenty of room for you.

Larry- nope, I extended the tongue and cobbled that together quick from an old double jetski trailer just to get the plane home. Eventually, I plan to make it into a float plane transport. It has the widest possible wheel track and two sets of adjustable bunks. After some modification, the Aerocets will just fit between the fenders with a float on new custom bunks.
Looks like I will need to design a nice dual purpose transport now.

Looking good, Doug! Did the trailer come with it?

Thanks for the help Russ! Lol, buying sure is quicker than building isn't it? Glad to hear your personal bi-annual inspection went ok too, hard to believe some rich folk voluntarily pay more for their trendy 'high colonic' therapy retreats than we did for our planes.

Well I would have to say the trip home went smooth. I think you were wise in your decision to by this bird. It looked and ran great when you picked it up. Hope you have many happy hours of flying in it. BTW everything came out OK with me today, (colonoscopy)
N844RS is ready for the AWC inspection , weight & bal., engine break-in, all went smooth. Russ. N844RS MK IV HH.

Leni- not yet. Fellow had it on his private strip which was just under 1000' L x 30' W, on a steep slope with tall obstacles and sun in eyes on approach. Oh, and did I mention, I'm new to this taildragger stuff?
Me thinks a big ass farm field sounds good for the first go around.

I'm going to build the Avid+ as a land plane and put the KF on my amphib floats. The W&B reads 428 lbs on bungee gear so it should get off the water pretty quick with the Bluehead and C-box (both ~60 hr TT). Plane itself has 500.1 hobb hrs and was built in FL by an A&P, been living up north since 2001.

That looks a lot better than your old setup Joey! I have the 'old' Airdale double on the Avid+ where I suspect it is just fine for a heavier airframe, but I wonder just how much stiffness differs between the two. Just curious, did Brett offer any actual comparison figures by chance?

Duh..too busy looking at the pretty pictures to read what you said about the installation. The more gradual spring bend should prove to be more durable over time.

Looks real good Joey. I notice that the new spring has attachment provisions for 2 bolts to be used to attach to the ac frame. Was your plane already setukp for that or did you have to do some drilling and other finingilling to make it work? How wide is the top spring before it was ground down to fit?

    MZ 202
Was wondering if anyone uses the MZ 202 motor instead of the 582. I dont know much about them other than what I have read. They only have 60 HP but have more displacement. I already have my 582 for my Skyraider build but they have kind of caught my interest.Air cooled vs water cooled dont know if thats good or bad, factory is in B.C.Canada so dont know how parts would be to get.No oil injection so they may carbon up more.I should probably stick with what works but was curious. Thanks Randy

when I pulled the covering off mine I found about 5 pounds of shit in the tail including about 5 sets of keys, a shoe, some wheel chocks, about 15 bucks in change and shitloads of nuts, bolts, cotter keys etc..

    Double TW spring updgrade
I had the little crappy single spring on my airplane since I got it. It bent during an off airport landing the other day and I've been told it's not if but when it was going to snap off. I picked up the this double TW spring from Airdale for $120. I had to drill an extra hole in the channel for the second bolt and I had to open up a small hole in the fabric to put the bolt in. You have to grind the head of the bolt down some to fit between the longerons. Also I had to re-rig my chains because it's longer than the stock spring. The geometry of my TW is much better now. This is a new type of spring that Brett just started selling. It has much more flex than the previous versions of the airdale double spring.
    BEFORE

    AFTER

And this is what happens when you open a place on an airplane that has been sealed since it was built. I found all this crap in the very bottom of the tail where the tubing comes together. Basically everything that had been dropped anywhere inside the plane made it's way here. Some of it probably came from when the horizontal stab was off several times in the past because that makes a straight shot down into the tail. That's a gascolater screen, a hinge pin, a castle nut, and other random crap. There was also a Penny stuck in there that I couldn't get out. Guess it'll be my good luck penny.

    New Toy!!
64 1/2 Mustang!! It was a gift for my wife. It's pretty clean but still needs a lot of work. It's just like anything else they are never done. It's got a few go fast goodies on it but the engine bay needs some attention before I show it off.

    Proud new owner

    Nice interior

    It's got some nice paint

    She is a doll huh!

We're flying in the Can of 172 Spam I got all learnt up in.

That picture was taken somewhere over Pybus Bay on the way to Kake last Sunday.

So far she's loving going with Daddy...although I haven't taken her on any low level tree-top busters like ol' uncle Leni used to do!

  22. napierm added a post in a topic flapperon foam repair.

On my KF III I repaired the inboard flapperon ribs using JB weld and microballoons. It had set up for years and a fuel leak had melted the inboard ribs. Cleaning the area 1st was the real chore. I applied some JB weld to "wet" the area and then mixed up some with microballoons to the consistancy of firm dough to replace the ribs. It has held up well. I suppose Hysol would have worked as well.

Also, there is also an old KF service letter about adding some small stainless steel pop rivets to help secure the skins to the actuator tube.

    FWIW,

    Morning Skip,

Sounds like a pretty good plan on the small hole and injecting glue. The flaperons on my avid do have foam forward of the Tq. tube. The flaperons are really floperons when they are not bolted to the wings. I was certain mine were broken and that I needed new ones till I pulled a set off a buddies and his were just as floppy, yet the plane was flying fine. I finaly just convinces myself that it was going to be OK and put them on my lane as is. Once bolted on they are solid.

My brother did the same thing on his KF II as your buddy did. On my Avid, I just run a strip or two of aluminum tape onthe radiator in the winter to keep the temps up at 160. I have not had any issues yet (knock knock) but I am rarely at a high enough altitude that shock cooling could become an issue. if I need to come down fast, I keep power on and pull the nose up not down. This keeps her making heat, wont let it lean out and I can fall out of the sky without rapid cooling.
