    HI Leni,
Thanks. I do have a primer. I hit the starter then give her a couple of shots of primer while cranking. Yesterday about 5 shots of prime, and then i quit priming to prevent flooding. Once the engine finally fired i had to prime 2 more shots to keep running initially. The time before last, i kept priming and of course flooded it!

When you crack the throttle, what rpm does that translate to?

What plugs are you using? I run the solid cap BR8ES. Was thinking of trying the BR8EV with the precious metal tips recommended by CPS. But if ya'll are using normal plugs that doesn't make sense for me to have to use those special plugs.

My plane is a MK IV w/ stol wings. Have you rolled an Avid w/ stol wings? I've looped mine, but am waiting for some testical enlargement to roll her. Roll rate seems a little slow! Thanks for your help, Bryce

That is a photo! :drool3: Man she looks great against that back drop!!! I am really liking the tail staying on top of the snow! Mine would be dragging the fuse right there.

What is the weight on your tail wheel? My fat lil piggy has around 60 pounds on the tail wheel.

    hahaha, 50 degrees..no preheat needed!

OK, that was just cause you said I would laugh.
#1 do you have primer or mixture enricheners?
#2 Blue smoke is OIL. The oil from the cylinder walls will creep down and soak your plugs on the inverted engine. It is normal for the lil puff of blue smoke for a minute or two as it burns out of the cylinders and exhaust.

Here is my procedure for starting in temps down to -25 without preheat!

Crack throttle open just a tad, hit the starter and pump the primer a few times till she fires. You want to get enough gas in there to wash the oil off the plugs but not flood it. I have found that priming without cranking leads to easy flooding. I cant ever remember having to crank it more than 10 seconds to get it to fire off unless I have flooded it when I was first learning the inverted starting and got a lil carried away with the primer.

I have only had an issue one time where it would not start, and that was due to a bad battery connection.

Now I am cheating and have a clutch so I dont have to get that prop swinging when it is cold, but if you have a good battery, it should not matter as we have all flown out and had to start side by side at -25 and the other guys started up almost as easy as mine.

If you dont have the primer, I would say spend the 20 or 30 bucks and install one. If using the mixture enricheners, make sure the throttle is at a dead idle or they will not work properly to really get the mixture rich.

What model bird you have? looks like a MK IV. Dont be afraid to post up pics over here!

    Avid 582 Cold Start
    Ok Guys,
I'm at my wit's end. Why does it take so damn long to start my 582 in my Avid when its below 50 degrees? I love my 582-runs great, smooth, simple to operate, until it get's cold! Well at least cold for this Southerner. Go ahead and laugh, we think 20-30 degrees is gonna kill us! The engine will start just fine above 50, usually 2-3 blades and she's going. The plane is in my garage, with a 100 watt bulb in the cowl with some blankets over it. Today it took probably a minute of cranking, 10-15 seconds at a time, to get her started. Had to jump it off my truck and when she finally started, there was a good bit of blue smoke till she cleared up. Today's temp was 40 degrees, last night was in the 20's. Once i get her started and warm, she will start just fine. Leni, What do you Alaskans do with your inverted 582's after your 3 weeks of summer? I think this engine might never start up there ! Thanks for your help, Bryce

Does not sound like Jack is going to show up without a fight.. You may have to go over and give him the ole what for. I have loaded mine way way down and she handled it just fine. I LOVE the room you have in yours. I am thinking the fat avid and the longer catalina wings would be the ticket! Still kicking around the idea of putting wingtip extensions on mine. I just wish I would have taken some of the twist out when I rebuilt mine.

Getting closer to the flyin day and lodge is on full alert. I need to get a good idea on how many plan on showing up so they can be ready for us. Sounds like they will make a run to town to get some special goodies for us if they know how many is planning on being there!

I will drop the parts off to the local powder coater's before I head out for our normal snowmachine trip for new years, then I will "get it on" around the 3rd and hope for new snow on the 6th!

Alright! I am looking forward to a great flyin to kick off the new year. Man I just can' t believe the constant wind we are having though; it can be calm at the house but when I get to Wolf lake it is rocking and rolling. I sure hope we get a break for the flyin. It would be great if we could talk Jack into coming out with us.

I am loving the space in the A+; I packed 2 duffle bags of survival gear, a tent, two sleeping bags, sleeping pad, wing and tail covers, aluminum shovel, snowshoes, etc all in the rear area of my baggage compartment and still have the larger front area open. The good thing about the Avid was I could never really overload it with gear. I will have to watch that with the A+.

I am working on a cowling cover out of the aluminum bubble insulation covered with parachute fabric and a preheater similar to what you describe, so I hope to have them ready to go by then. I just bought a new jacket and over pants that are not as warm as I had hoped. Sure wish I knew of the Arctic Armor before I bought them.

I have about 4 hrs on my tail ski now. It is working great. Tried it in knee deep snow today with no trouble. Wore my Artic Armor while flying, that to worked great. The outside temps were about 12 degree's. I think that to is going to be a good investment. I ordered the suit from Reed's in Walker Mn. They seem to sell alot of the suits and can size you up over the phone.

Mark-- Where did you get that suit? My Carhart coat (much less add in the bibs, too) is so bulky... I can't hardly move once in the plane!

Damn Mark, that sounds like one of my hunts. Seems that every hunt turns to an adventure

I will have to check out that suit. I really like the buoyant part! My Klim snow gear and fleece is good to very low temps, but it wont float me and I have lots of open water to cross when I head up to the lodge.

    Thanks for the tip!

Have 10 days off starting tomorrow. Hope to do as much flying as I can. Snow conditions here are super again this year. If the weather holds I should be able to put a few hours on my new ski. Sure seems to work good so far, and the installation was super simple. Also hope to get a little late season bow hunting in. If you guys are interested I ordered a new camo suit this week,it is bibs, coat and gloves. Wanted it for hunting ,fishing and winter flying. It is called Artic Armor. It has 3 layers of Insultex,it is windproof, waterproof, and buoyant. I tried it tonight bow hunting and it seemed to work good. I will get to use it more next week. One other thing is that it is light weight and not real bulky, and you are not suppose to need anything but fleece underneath it. I am hoping it will work for flying to. Right now I use Carhart bibs and coat. That suit gets real bulky while flying. The Artic Armor suit also comes in other colors. Another good selling point is it is buoyant. Learned my lesson this fall while duck hunting a local river in my kayak loaded full of duck hunting gear. Tried floating under a dead fall across the river with a gun on my lap, backpack between my legs and decoys behind my seat with hip boots on under a rain suit. Every thing I did that morning was wrong. Well any way I rolled it and went under, scared the shit out of me. Lost my back pack full of gear, dropped my gun in the river, did geat that back after diving for it 3 times, wrecked my phone ect. So this new cold weather suit could be worth it for anybody living in a cold weather area that likes to fly, fish, hunt, snowmobile, ect.
    Merry Christmas,
    Mark

    Randy,

I called the lodge and have them on high alert for the 7th to the 9th, or when ever I feel like leaving They have room for 20 peeps so it wont be an issue.

For the pre-heater, I bought an MSR multi fuel stove, a 50 cal. ammo box and some scat tube. Drill a bunch of 1/2" holes all around the bottom of the ammo can an inch or so from the bottom and put a couple outlets for the scat tube to fit on in the top lid. Put the stove inside it with the fuel bottle on the outside. Light it, shut the lid and put the scat hose on the outlets n shovem up in the cowling. Make sure you have enough holes around the bottom to get a good draft coming out the tubes and she will put out some serious heat!

I had done something like this in the past with a coleman multi fuel stove and dryer vent, but this one will all pack into the ammo can real neat. I got the idea from here

    http://forums.outdoo...ngine-Preheater

THe bonus with the ammo can like this and the two outlets is.... yep, stick both in the cowling to get that engine warmed up, then move one into the cockpit to get it thawed out while still keeping the engine nice and warm with the other one. You would be surprized how much heat these lil guys will put out!

I will keep it updated here on the flyin, and give you a shout when I get into town and see how many guys we can drag out there. You need to tell Jack he needs to come along to make sure you do not get his covers put on the plane wrong I am sure we can get someone to give him a ride out there if he wants to come out and play, hell, I will swing by your place and pick him up if I need to, I dont mind flying out of the way a little bit!

Hmm, Gonna have to think about this one. The Durabat, while a great concept, was a flying brick! That gutter material is HEAVY.

You may consider doing what I did with alot of my older stuff. Donate it to the local RC club, or talk to them and see if there are any kids in the area that are trying to get into the hobby, but dont have the recources. I have put a smile on many kids faces over the years by giving them RC stuff ready to go that I knew I would never use any more. Since I have gone to pretty much all Gas or Electric, I am giving away 2 cases of fuel to a couple local kids who love the hobby, but the parents done have the ability to get them as much fuel as they would like to burn.

I have also donated tons of stuff to the local club for things such as door prizes for taking the time to show up for the monthly club meetings, and prizes for club fun fly events to get more participation. It does not do anything for the ole pocket book, but it does help further the hobby. I know for damn sure that I would not have had the bug so bad to get into GA if I had not been such a model airplane freak (thanks Dad!). For the most part, RC Models kept me out of trouble with the law because I was too busy and spent every dime I had on airplanes instead of parties!

On the other hand, if I had not been so far into the modeling, I could have bought a very nice 180 by now
