Thanks for the post - However, you did not show how far it extends the LE. Are those ribs and spars same size, like Avid?
Can this be bought? This looks like it only wraps around the LE spar - not extending it forward?
If it don't fit, then I still have to make mine. Going back to read Harry's letter: He said 2, I am going 3 inches Forward.
Nice looking plane Doug. Makes mine look "Cheap?...Chinzy?....Clumbzy?....Ah HA!....Ekonomikal !!!! One out of 4 aint bad!!!

Ed- Aerotrek uses a fiberglass leading edge cuff that is larger than the Kitfox/Avid PVC leading edge extrusion.

Riblett Letter - Extending Leading Edge - VGs
I have read with great interest, the comments that builders and flyers have made about the increased weight of the EA-81 and the forward CGs, adding weight to tail to correct, etc.
The post about Harry Riblett's findings and his recommendations to extend the leading edge, and the letter from the other man who put VGs under the leading edge, now have me considering making a fiberglass extension to match the specs Harry gave. I have worked with glass lots over the past 50 years. I would probably use one lamination of carbon-fiber cloth bertween glass layers.
First, I have to finish my fuselage, and my wings are ready to cover, so if this experiment happens, it will need to be the next step. I will post photos and results if anyone interested.
Note: I already have the plastic LE from kitfox installed, so will continue to use that profile on LE extensions. Could fill them with instant foam unless someone knows why this would not be good.
All comments are welcome. I am only planning to make one set, unless there is a LOT of incentive.

Thanks - Trying again - Had MSN for homepage with this new puter - Went back to Yahoo like the old puter had, so that may have been the problem - Almost certain it had nothing to do with your site - Just untrained new puter and dum ole user!
I will let you know if I still have problems.
    Thanks for patience.
NOTE: just tried it , and it works as good as before.

    Good luck, Doug.

I think you may have a pandoras box type nightmare trying to reregister a deregistered, certificated airplane now as an experimental. I'll be interested to see how this plays out.

Seriously, good luck. I hope you can get it done.

    Re-registering SLSA to ELSA...
I had a WTB ad on Barnstormers for an Aeropro CV Aerotrek engine mount and cowl. I had figured it was likely one of the best options to fit on my Avid+ project. Well, I got a call from someone who actually had the parts, and the rest of a damaged low-time plane as well. Long story short, the damage looked quite repairable and price so right I agreed to buy the whole darn 'pile of parts' (no airworthiness certificate and de-registered for liability reasons). I'm convinced that repair will be cost effective and after my A&P returns from Sun 'n Fun next week we will see what he says. If I decide to go the repair route, I will obviously need to register the aircraft and I believe my only real option is ELSA. Typically, new aircraft must undergo the 40-hr flight test, however, since this was a previously registered, manufacturer-built SLSA with prior airworthiness certificate, I wonder how much, if any, of the 40-hr requirement can be eliminated (which I understand is at the discretion of the DAR).

For example, an SLSA receives the initial production flight-test airworthiness permit and then is flight tested by the manufacturer. Following successful completion, the aircraft is then eligible for a permanent SLSA airworthiness certificate, usually issued in the name of the importing dealer. The buyer then registers the new aircraft in his/her name at purchase. Of course, as an SLSA, the owner can not perform maintenance, inspections or repair without the proper certifications and/or manufacturer's written letter of authorization. If an owner of an S-LSA aircraft wants to change it to an E-LSA (in accordance with 14 CFR 21.191(i)(3)), primarily to do their own maintenance and make modifications without the need for a manufacturer LOA, the following steps must be completed:

    - Complete a new 8130-6 (Application for Airworthiness Certificate.
    - Create a Program letter.
    - Provide current air airworthiness certificate for the airplane and current flight restrictions (these get turned in and you receive a complete new set for ELSA).
    - Provide aircraft/Engine log books showing the aircraft is current and all AD's complied with.
    - I have read where some who went ELSA ended up with a 5 hour Phase I flight restriction of 100 miles, while others had no Phase I or restrictions.

Again, assuming the aircraft is repaired to manufacturer specs and nothing else changed prior to registration, because the aircraft has been fully tested and held a prior airworthiness certificate, it seems like a whole bunch of bureaucratic overkill to require and repeat the same 40-hr test as a one-off experimental. Anyone have experience, thoughts, recommendations, etc. to help make this case when I speak to the DAR?

Secondly, let's assume I want to fly my ELSA as a sport pilot and I register it as a land airplane with gross weight of 1320 lbs. Then, after the restrictions have been flown off, I want to put it on floats. I understand installing the floats will be considered a major change, however, that will not be a problem if I ensure my operating limitations allow a major change. I suspect the first time I install the floats I will need to put the aircraft back into a flight-test period of a minimum of 5 hrs. min., during which the aircraft handling with the floats installed is tested (at it's new gross weight up to 1430 lbs. if elected). After successful completion of flight testing with floats, I should then have the option of operating the aircraft on floats at the 1430 lb. gross weight and on wheels at the 1320 lb. gross weight. It appears you simply make a logbook entry each time you switch from wheels to floats or vice versa. Can anyone confirm that requirement?

Exciting, but my poor Avid+ project keeps getting pushed farther and farther back into the corner.

Ed, When you open up a picture, there should be a box in the lower right hand corner that says close with an X next to it. That will close the picture but not boot you off the page.

You should also just be able to click off the picture and it will go away too.

I will look into your forum settings on your profile and see if there is something funky checked off on it.

Mine came with 2 metal washers on the shaft and they boogered up the threads over time and cause me to loose the ability to adjust the pitch. I have a new one and have not yet installed it. Make sure there are no metal washers on the threaded portion on the shaft.

Herman, I am not sure just how far you were running the pitch to snap that shaft. Remenber, you are only talking about needing to change the pitch a few degrees inflight, not running it from stop to stop. I doubt I ever use more than a couple quick blips of the toggle switch, you never need to hold it one way or the other more than a second MAX.

Where do you get a stick grip with so many switch options?
IVO repaired the motor jack screw at no charge and I will re install tommorrow.
The jack screw failure happened without the poly switches installed.
I feel the poly switches will reduce the load on the mechanism.
What amperage of poly switch are you using?
Can you post how you are wiring them with your stick controled switch and relays?
    Thanks Herman

Thank you and Suberavid both for your posts. What model? NONE, but using Dean's fuselage and wing design as a base, with Denny's mods as in the Kitfox Two thru Five, With lots of strengthening - highly modified scratchbuilt clone here, but lots of the original so some parts are still useable.
Airdale uses the stratus, don't know if they ever did a Reductions - doubt it. The photos that Suberavid sent will be very helpful and nice work to look at - Now, I have to learn this new puter enough to print them. This new windows program kicks me off of the forum everytime I look at a photo and try to go back to the post. Our old system didn't do that - painfully enept - me too!!!!
Many Thanks. That exhaust system sure looks good - is that a homebrew - not Stratus for sure unless he changed designs.

My roof was raised six inches and seats raised the same amount - Got supernice boatseats from Cabelas for $35 each on sale.
Dum-ass designer (me) forgot to raise IP, Cowl, and engine to match! Getting new appointment at weld shop!
Now - Think I have this fingered out - someday will post photos when successful - I hope! Still getting a nose gear design done that I like better than the Kitfox design (which looks like it came from Van's or Glassair?/GlassStar? Anyone know the specs on that skinny tube or rod they used for a nose gear? Just nosey.
BTW: I have 14 inch FLAPS and Ailerons with seperate controls - something like a Cessna with push-pull tubes, using Steve Wittman's tube within a tube design instead of the cables that break and turn my beard white! My Horizontal attaches like a Piper or Maule - Lots stronger than KF, I think.

    Hi Herman,

I am still working on my IVO set up and have not completed the mount for the brushes yet so I haven't run it yet. I am a bit concerned that you had a jack screw failure. I am hoping that was just an odd fluke. Fortunately I don't think it is catastrophic as long as you still are pitched where you have some climb capability if there is a failure in flight. One thing I was not clear on from the instructions was if the plastic washers are to be placed on the spool side of the shaft or the backing plate side with the spacer washers on the oposite. It seems like it would not matter since the plastic washer should provide a cushion on either side.

I was able to wire up my prop adjustment control to the unused extra buttons on my stick so I have the trim, prop and PTT all on the stick. I prewired it all on a plate I had in a blank instrument hole so I have the circuit breaker and the two LED lights for the fine and course pitch limits mounted through the plate and on the shelf behind it I mounted two relays and the poly switches. The dual relay switches and wiring circuit take the place of the manual switch supplied by IVO to change the polarity to the prop brushes. It's pretty cool having it all controlled on the stick.

Ed, These are from my Avid+. The motor mount was originally for an Avid and just slightly modified for the Avid+. The blue conical mounts bolted onto the motor came from Stratus. I only have pictures of the top ones but there are also ones on the bottom that bolt to the motor block and then to the motor mount. I know Stratus sells them because I bought mine separately from the motor.

Nice work. Looking at the way you have the flap handle and the arm going to the F7s attached or potentially attached, once the bushings are welded to the truss, isn't the shaft attaching them together forever trapped between the welded on bushings? On the Avid Plus the support for the far left side of the cross shaft is a nylon pillow block sort of affair. This allows for applying some friction, but also you can remove the shaft so you can lube it or replace it if needed. Just wondering.

NEED SOOB / FOX / AVID ENGINE MOUNT PHOTO
Just mounted my EA-81 with the Pelican mount on the firewall of my Fox. Got it WAY Low!Need to come up at least 3 inches, but 7 inches would be lots better. Only problem, with this mount, anything more than 3 inches would put bumps in my upper cowl on each side. My oil pan hangs about 5 inches below the lower firewall. My prop clearence is about minus an inch or two!!!
Was wondering if anyone could post some photos, Kitfox prefered, but maybe Avid helpful, of your mount/engine/firewall setup.
    Many Thanks for any help.

Oh boy.... Here we go. Yes the 583 is a snowmobile engine. Yes it has single ignition, yes it has RAVE valves, yes it needs a custom exhaust to get anywhere near 97hp, yes it runs great if you put your throttle at 7000 rpm and leave there, yes it's a huge pain in the ass to tune, and yes it has NO midrange. Steve Beatty of Airscrew performance swears by them and will do anything he can to get you to trade your 582 for one. I've known of two guys that had them and both finally ended up with a 582 in the end after lots of money and lots of wasted time trying to get them to run the way they wanted them to.

    Rotax 583
I have a new Rotax 532 w gear box and prop that came with my kit, i would like to put a 582 on it but would rather just get flying than wait until I can afford one. I see i can pick up a 583 for around 500.00 They claim to have 97 HP why don't we see more of these being used on Avids and Kitfoxes? is this a good alternative or am i better off just going with my 532 until i can afford to go to the 582.

I just noticed that you replyed to my question 8 days ago.Sorry.
Yes the jack screw broke within minutes of installing and everything was wired exactly as IVO sent the switch and breaker.
I should be getting the repaired IFA motor and jack screw back any day.
Today I started to wire in the poly switches and noticed that your switch wiring diagram differs from how IVO sends the prewired switch
as to where on the switch the power and ground and slipring connections are.
IVO sent the switch with power from the breaker and ground going to the middle pair of terminals of the 6 terminal switch.
You have the slipring wires to the motor originating from the middle pair.
I am trying to figure out why I had a jack screw failure so soon.
Hopefully the polyswitches will offer better protection and faster reset than the IVO breaker.
Do you have a Lycoming powered Magnum?
Does it have an IVO IFA prop that you developed the polyswitches on?
    Thanks Herman
