I do have a piece of fairly stout aluminum that was supposed to be for mounting the side radiator but I plan to relocate it down under the belly so I will not need it. Also have the aluminum door panels for the lower part of the door that I plan to replace with lexan so I could use this as well, Would that do you think. If so should I just slit the lower cap strip slide it in and glue/rivet it in place?

Thanks for making the engine mount comparison with Bob.
The past post with photos you directed me to give a good idea the difference between the Kitfox and Avid 582 install and engine mounts.
The Kitfox engine mount attaches to the fire wall at 5 points all on the same flat plane, 4 of which look similar to the Avid and the 5th attachment clear at the bottom and middle of the fuselage seems not to exist on the Avid.
Your engine sits very low, but the gear box is still quite high.
This may be the reason Joey's gear box is in the breeze which would make for a smaller, lower and narrower cowl which would be easier to see around.
Joey; where did your cowl come from or is it a one off?
Anyone have photos showing the Avid 582 exhaust layout.
    Thanks to all

When we move planes, we let some air out of the tires, then ratchet-strap them tightly, then add air to make them super-tight. Otherwise, they will eventually shake loose.

Make sure you install wing braces for that long of a trip.

Even easier, is to buy some 1 x 1 thin aluminum angle, cut into 8 inch pieces, and trim one leg to suit. Then glue and rivet.

If your trailer is an open, flatbed, it should work - although with wings folded, the Kitfox is about 21 feet long, with the long wings, and about 19 feet with the short wings. A 8 x 20 would be better tho.
They seldom fit in an 8 ft wide closed trailer, unless you take the wings off - if you do that, be sure to pad them a lot, as those roads are not the smoothest, IMO. Best way to move it is to fly it back.

P.S. If you use an open trailer, be sure to take a tarp and plenty of tie-downs for it. You will surely drive thru rain, and probably snow, and with the wings folded, you have to cover the open area where the turtledeck was removed.

Size of trailer to move a Kitfox?
    Hi everyone,

I'll be making the trip in the next few days to pick up the Kitfox IV 1050 that I have put a deposit on. I've got about a 16 hour drive each way to Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories to pick it up, including a ferry crossing of the Mackenzie River. It should be quite a road trip.

I am planning to rent a trailer to haul the Kitfox, I'm just wondering how big of a trailer I will need. I have access to a trailer that is 16 feet long and 8 feet wide, will that be big enough?

    Thanks,
    Randy

Is that really easier than bending up some aluminum? You don't have to use .025†2024-T3 aluminum angles, any aluminum you put on there who'll be significantly stronger than without. Nothing in the scrap pile that might work?

On the 3rd post, there is a shot of my engine and you can see alot of the mount. I get home tuesday night and I have a spare mount, so I will take it over to Bobs and hold it up to the front of his Mod III or IV and see how close it is to lining up.

That's kinda what I was thinking, just trying to decide do I wrap it out and around the bottom cap strip and back into the webbing or do i cut small slits in the bottom cap strip against the webbing to allow the layers to just go straight through into the webbing? also I've never worked with carbon fiber before so I'm not to sure how many layers I need I'm thinking two layers per side, does this sound about right.

I appreciate this forum taking on my motormount/visability over the cowl issue.
My model 1-2 Kitfox has been updated to a model 4 engine mount so I am sure model 1-4 have the same attachment points to the fire wall.
I have a spare mount so if someone has an Avid 582 spark plugs down mount I would like to compare the distances between the 5 attach points on the firewall.
There is an Experimental Super Cub manufacturer in Wyoming that lowers the Lycoming 4 inches with a modified engine mount, most likely to improve visability.
I want to do the same and would like this forums advice.
Modifying or copying the Avid concept would be the easiest to implement since cowls and exhaust may be available.
I have heard that the Avid 582 installation utilizes a exhaust system that gets full power out of the 582 whereas the Kitfox exhaust has to be modified to fit with a power loss.
    Is this true?
If I built my own motormount to lower the 582 with the spark plugs up, where would the already problamatic exhaust go besides out in the breeze which would be the simplest but not conventional?
Would lowering the thrust line of the prop compromise how the airplane flys?
Does anyone have photos of an Avid 582 installation showing the exhaust, motormount,cowl....?
    Thanks Herman

I failed to notice in your photo if you had an overhanging lip over the IP. Bengalis (sp?) in his books recommended an overhanging glareshield over the instruments, and as a safety factor, to edge it with a split garden hose. I chose to use split PVC conduit instead.
Congratulations on your build, and GOOD FLYING.

I wish I could get your rates up here! My quote was triple that for liability only. They laughed at me when I asked for a quote for 15,000 hull.. That was with 400 hrs in type.

Thanks for the replies,I think I will try EAA and AOPA for insurance pricing. Thanks Ed for the suggestion on the IP, thought of that as I was putting on the design. I cleared the IP with a satin clear so will have to see when we get flying. Your probably write about the glare though.

No suggestion on insurance, but one suggestion on IP: Nice engine turning on IP - LOOKS GOOD, BUT, You may hate it later on when the sun glares on it. Better to paint it or cover with leather or wood, IMHO. Good looking paint job on plane. What system did you use?

Contact EAA's insurance service. They treated me very well when I started out. I'm with Falcon through them.

I have also heard the some people have good luck with AOPA's insurance brokerage too.

    Insurance
I am nearly finished with my Kitfox lll build and need to start looking for insurance. Being a low time taildragger pilot I know it is not going to be easy. I do want to get some dual time in a Kitfox to knock off the rust, anyone in central New York with a Kitfox interested? The anticipation builds for the maiden flight the closer I am to being finished, sure others know what I mean. Any suggestions on a company for insurance?
