    MATCO BRAKE LINE SIZES QUESTION
Didnt want to have to scroll thru 2 or more pages of the stuff the came from the post about bearing and pad numbers to ask a simple question, and hopefully, get just a simple answer.
When you guys are talking about 1/8 inch brake line, I am supposing that you are talking about the ID of a .250 OD nylon line?
    Do I understand this correctly?
Do I order 1/8 or 1/4 line from Spruce?
Really not wanting a debate about which line is better.
Also, if I use my gundrilled aluminum Grove landing gear, where the line attaches to the bottom of the leg, going up to the caliper, is this same line the one to use, or do I need Aerowhatever rubber lines?

Yikes, I take off for a couple days to raft n play and a good internet fight breaks out.. Why the hell do I always miss the good stuff! Cmon guys, I think there may have been a lil misunderstanding that got someones panties in a knot. I do not think the intent on anyone's part to was to insult someone!

At any rate, I value EVERYONE'S thoughts and opinions on here and don't want to see anyone leave or stop posting.

John, have a beer, chill out a lil and don't read more into Mike's comment than was really there. I can see how you may have taken it, but I know that was not his intent. I have Mikes brakes on my bird too and they do provide all the braking power I need.

The only think I will disagree with is going from 1/8" lines to 1/4" lines... The Matco brakes are very very low volume systems and the masters move VERY little fluid. The smaller lines actually work better than the larger lines as you have to move even less fluid to get the same pressure. Atleast, when I switched from 1/4" to 1/8" then back to 1/4" then back to 1/8" I found that I had a little bit better brakes using the 1/8" line, but that was just my non scientific method of dropping into short strips and standing on them to help determine if I was indeed able to stop faster. All I care about is getting the bird stopped faster, and I can do that with the 1/8" lines.

I am off to mix a cold tall one and relax, hope you guys can do the same!

Failed to mention that the BAT Solinoid should be located close as possible to the battery, on the box is a good place.
Let me know how the TBI works out - might trade my Holly carb for one someday.

NO NO NO I meant you are not a part of the group who have been emailing me over the years telling me my methods are invalid. That the knowledge in your post is demonstrating that to me.You said something like leverage in toe braking systems is tricky to determine or that toe braking systems are tricky to set up and I concurred with your statement saying only George Happ and the person he schooled had previously demonstrated how leverage is accurately determined....I'm not attacking you, where is this coming from.

Funny how lives are different - AC and newfangeled puter-type stuff was too much for me. Did fine with DC in school. Hated the supercycle stuff on commercial planes - got really shaken physicly by it once.
Whenever you have a question, there are usually answers on this site, and even some opposing opinions. Just sort out what you need.

Thanks Randy and Ed for the help , I just ask the questions and my brother kinda figures out the technical stuff.Ed my engine was built by a fellow named Karlo Khunner ,its a gear reduction drive and I am using a TBI-40 throttle body injection from rotec, the fuel pump is a facet ,wish I could tell you more but my D.C. wirng skills really suck, can handle any A.C probs but not much ac stuff on planes :hammerhead:

And, kick me again for only getting part of it right !!!
Thank you DAVE and JOHN for answering with the part numbers. You probably helped lots of Flyers.
Didn't mean to slight you, but you didnt threaten to quit.
I may screw up sometimes, but learn from that too.
Sometimes a simple question csn turn into an irrelevent debate, and that might, or might not, be useful.
I will only "quit" when voted out or banned. (No virgin here!)

What ea81 are you using? If it is not a Stratus, and you have a Holly or Webber carb, I need info on fuel pumps.
100% of your negative is grounded to the airframe, including the battery. But not the Bat Solinoid with the double connections, and even that eventually goes to ground on the airframe, on one side of the master switch. Your protection is always on the positive side, with that one exception.
If all of my garble confused you, then just go with what SuberAvid wrote. He has a working system.

Correction to the above: You will NOT need the 60 amp switch for the BAT Solinoid switch, and you could also use a light-duty switch for the alternator INPUT circuit in case of a short in that circuit. The Cessna switches are made for this use.
I would still go with the 60 amp switch, as well as the Heavy circuit breaker as an addition to the OUTPUT side of the alternator to prevent a runaway from burning up everything connected to the power circuit.
There was a "crowbar" protection article in the "Aero-electronics" section of Kitplanes magazine, which is supposed to be better, but too electronicly complicated for me to want to make.

I am sure that SuberAvid has a system that works - he has been flying his for a while. I like the twin red Cessna Master switches, however, two heavy, 60 amp toggle or rocker switches will do the same job, and can be seperated, but may cost more than the $27, or so, nice Cessna switches.
However, I feel that a couple of technical terms need to be corrected here.
The battery master is connected to a POSITIVE wire,(but I can see that a negative connection would work if that is the only connection to ground), to the CONTINUOUS USE solonoid which is in the POSITIVE main wire close to the battery.
The alternator Master should be on the OUTPUT side of the alternator between it and POSITIVE power bus, bercause the alternator is self-energizing and will continue to be in runaway condition even if the signal power is disconnected.
You should have some heavy (40 to 60 amp) breakers on the alternator output circuit, and on the main battery circuit.
The seperate ignition and fuel pump wire should be on seperate smaller circuit breakers and switches.
I am not an expert on this, so if there are builders who can add to this, or correct my writing, please feel free to do so.
I may have some books on this other than the standard twin-mag wirings you mostly see.
Sorry I couldnt write to Marshawk last night when you were on, but my puter was acting up.

ED in MO ADD: I can see where wiring to the positive side of the BAT SOL would require extra wiring.

I really do not care "if I am a part of whatever crowd you deem to be the in crowd"

I also do not need to hear that only two people in the world are the only ones who can figure out geometry configurations ,that was a rude remark that does not need interpretation

I never said anything about your "leverage method : whether right or wrong

I never said anything about you or your leverage at all

so why you posted what you did is beyond me

I guess I'll just go back to reading
and won't bother trying to participate in anything on this forum
if this is the way people react

    Edit:
    BTW

I was the only one who actual posted what the topic of his thread asked for
    I was on topic...

but since you had to quote me,
like I was spreading crap about you, your leverage system and your friends
this has gotten way off topic

I quote my first post in this thread

You can dissect any post since
I spread no interruption of anything

    You can dissect my posts
nowhere did I mention you,or your leverage system

About the only thing, not on Matco's installation manual
would be the 1/8 line to 1/4 line

If a guy can not even express an opinion on this forum
    without being attacked over it

Being told only two people can figure something out
and that"They are not in that crowd"

well,I guess maybe this forum is not for me

Amazing how the words we put on the internet can be totally misconstrewed. George Happ is the president of matco mfg but I'm thinking you already know that...I mention his name because he is a competent accredited engineer and the dozens of people who have emailed me telling me my leverage method is wrong or said the mc-4d master doesn't have enough leverage to meet that matco minimum requirement aren't.Near as I can tell you are not a part of that crowd.

I used a Cesna type split switch for my master switch with one to the solonoid at the battery and one to the alternator. The battery one is a negative if I remember right and it trips the solonoid to energize the battery main positive cable to the positive buss. The alternator switch is positive to send signal power to the alternator. I used two separate single pole switched for my ignitions; one taking positive from the buss and one coming direcly off the battery and bypassing the battery solonoid so I still have ignition power on that ignition if I have to shut down the master switch. Probably a lot of ways to do this but that was my thinking.

You still ride those dangerous things? My HD mileage limit ran out years ago. Lots of stories there. My flying buddy showed up some years ago on a new hog to take me for a ride - I flatly told him I would fly with him anytime in anything, but would not ride to the end of the block with him on any bike.
Yes, I know all about car brakes and bike brakes being drilled - Do they drill out the floatplane brakes too? lol
So hot and dry here - wont worry about drilling disks - Had to put tents and cold IV bottles on the watermelon vines to keep the melons from going flat !!!!
Had to have the last word - Thanks

    Master Switch Wiring
Just getting ready to wire the panel on my avid with the ea81 and looking for some help. Luckly my brother is a mechanic but what we want to know is the master switch better to be mechanical or electrical and do you switch the positive or the negative, so we can still run hot to ignition and fuel, is this correct?

    Thanks for any input

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disc_brake

    When first disc's were drilled
they in fact were drilled to dissipate heat

but check out the motorcycle industry these days

The drilled rotors do dissipate heat,
but are really more there for improved braking in wet condition now a days
or with drilled and slotted rotors although they could be drilled or slotted or both
the slots being for water, and drilled holes for water and heat

    Floating rotors:
They have drilled disc rotors for bikes
that "bolt" onto a Billet Aluminum hub... then the hub bolts to the wheel

Now the rotor heats up,but heat dissipates extremely quick through the Billet aluminum hub
as everyone knows... aluminum dissipates heat quicker than steel

They actually do not hard bolt the rotors to the billet hub
They have special inserts, between the rotor and the hub and the bolts go through the inserts
which bolts the hub to the rotor without actually connecting it directly to the hub

so yes drilled rotors were invented to dissipate heat,
but just turned out also to be beneficial in wet conditions

    In the motorcycle industry
drilled rotors are mainly for wet riding conditions
and if serious high performance braking is required

then floating rotors are what is used
especially on Big Inch engines where braking could be extreme

    I know ,I know
I said I was going to leave the discussion lol

just wanted to reply to Ed

Actually I realize that, as I read it above posted

If geometry is right,calipers/rotors and brake lining pads are in good shape
sure 1/8 inch line is suffice

1/4 inch line though, does in fact increase the pressure,
and I have this information from a very good source also

The key is,geometry in the tow brake assemble and master cylinder
Matco would agree totally with what I am saying

Not sure how a statement like that should be interpenetrated.
    is that an insult ?

Is there honestly only two rocket scientists on Earth...
one named George and the other a man who talked to George... that could ever be able to do this ?

    Come on, lol
I think someone should maybe get a Saw and cut out there doors to there house...
so they can get there swelled head through the door

    Ya,I know
I read the entire thread awhile ago

Looks like I touched a nerve

so I will let you all carry on your conversation without me

Congratulations Joey on another super adventure and thank you for sharing it with all of us through your great pictures and naration. That is some serious flying. I keep saying that one of these days I will do a trip just around AK for a week or so, but would like to have another partner/plane to do it with. Maybe I can talk Leni into it and Jack when he gets his plane done. The other thing I would like to do is get my Avid down to the home place in OR sometime and clear a landing strip there on the place; then doing some flying down there as well. Your pictures of the Alvord remind me of the times I spent there in my highschool years hunting along the Steens Mts and looking for arrowheads on the Alvord, ice fishing in Mann lake and soaking in the hot springs. I haven't spent much time in ID except drivign through it between OR and UT when I lived down there and traveling to hunt in MT and play in Jackson Hole and Yellowstone. That was mostly before I had a pilot's license but once a pilot, you always wish you could see things from the air. Thanks for sharing this; hope the adventure continues for many years and we get to see your pictures every year. Maybe one of these years I can have Avid1 back together and down in OR where I can join you.
