I agree that the leading edge extention gives you more benifits than just sweeping the wing forwards, I also agree that I would build mine with only 1/2" of washout not 1.5" -1.75" (the depth of a 2X4). I was just pointing out that many have swept the wing forwards when installing a 912 or subie on the earlier model planes and none have reported any nasty tip stalls. Everything about these planes flight characteristics is pretty mundane except for those which they were designed. STOL SLOW FUN!

I am sitting here when I should be working on my hangar addition even if it is raining but I am chilling and reading the forum. It is a great museum; I try to go every time I am back to the home place in the Hood River valley. All these plans are flyable and they try to fly them on a rotational basis. Here is a teaser; the last time I was there I think they had over 75 airplanes and about that many antique autos and motorcyles. Very cool!

Not disagreeing with you on that. However, my aero-engineering design books did not take into account the large amount of washout that these planes have. Eliminating that washout could change stall characteristics with forward sweep. Sort of unknown territory there.
If I was building mine from scratch again, I would only have 1/2 inch of washout, and I would move the crossover tubes forward unless I found a reason that it wouldnt be feasable. Like changing the location of the lower pivot point. Any mod is like opening a new can of worms.
Still, the LE extension gives more lift benefit than just sweeping forward.

Lots of guys swung the wings forward, and it was a factory recomended "mod" for the guys putting in the heavier engines. If built per manual, there is so darn much washout in the wings I dont think you could get a good tip stall going if you worked at it! When 80% of the wing is stalled (fronm the root outboard) those darn tips are still flying and just hold you in a mush. I have tried every kind of out of coordination configuration on the stalls and I cant get mine or the other 3 I have flown to give me a real break like a spam can will. The only way I have been able to get a "good" break is full power VERY rapid pull the nose up till your looking at the sky at a 60 deg + angle and hold it there till your out of speed. It will break through the horizon then start flying again.

Just my observations on these lil guys and tip stalls.

I will one of these days! Work be kicking my ass right now. This is the LAST damn time I sign up for extra time. 5 weeks at a time in the god forsaken north is TOO DAMN MUCH! I will be going to 3 weeks on 3 weeks off starting August 16th so I will have more time to play and get out and about.

Sure would like to know weight of the corvair - believe it is heavier than the Soob, especially if you have a redrive.
And probably longer too - need to have it right at firewall.
Guess you know about the mod for a 5th main bearing they say is needed?
If you need farther forward CG, and about 8 more square feet of wing, look at my post on extended leading edges, and photos of mine, in Avidfoxflyers Hanger.
Wishing you success on your build. Lots more work than just a kit.

EDIT: Looking back at some of your posts - swinging wings forward can cause tip stalls - better to extend leading edges, and get more lift from extra wing area, IMO.

Sorry Doug and folks. Been just a bit busy to post updates. . Been slow progress on the project this year. Some heat reasons, some funds reasons and some other reasons, one being flying the Clipper, so all's not bad. I'll get back in here soon and post some updates.

I'm off all next week but it's time for Oshkosh. Probably most everyday if possible. Maybe see some of you there.

I've also got myself involved with the following exciting program. We'll be in (I believe) the home builders building working on another plane project. See link. Aviators By Design

  10. EDMO added a post in a topic TINTED WINDSHEILD QUESTIONS

Just for info: I found the specs on the light bronze tinted Lexan - Light transmission is 88%.
Dont know what the gray (smoke), or light green tint transmission is, but any vendor should have specs on it.
My Dark Bronze Plexiglas sunroof material gives Light (UV) BLOCKAGE of 76 or 88% depending on tint used.
Probably about the same for Dark Green, or other dark transparencies?
AND, TO CORRECT my mistake earlier: Grainger does NOT have tinted plastics. sorry about that.
I found CADILLAC PLASTICS online, but there should be a local vendor who can save you shipping.

Agree - Welding can be either good or bad - Best to know your welder.
MINE IS BEING O/A WELDED at an FAA certified repair station. The welder there looked at the welds on my other factory-welded KF and did not care much for them.
I also had TIG welding done by an Air Force Welding Inspector at Boeing. He says that MIG welding, like Kitfox/Avid makes four different metals in parts of the weld, and would not have approved the process for Boeing.
So much for that, and sure that it can be debated a lot by folks who know welding better than I do. I can arc-weld for a machine shop, but wouldnt fly anything I welded - Would be too heavy to fly anyway. OOPS, FORGOT - Doctors told me to sell my welder before I lost another kidney to cancer !!!
BEST to have a good inspection on anything you buy or fly.
BTW: Havent seen any Soobs with floats before - Thought it was too heavy. Got mine off of a Pelican which was too heavy when put on floats with the Soob. I don't fly on floats or over water - CANT SWIM ! Rivers here drying up anyway.

My smart assed remark is around the fact that the Ravin was a scratch built plane so the quality of welding could be very questionable. That being said if you are comfy with your inspection skills or are doing a total rebuild and can inspect everything the design is sound enough. Anything that has gone through Brett's shop will have been inspected very well. He is a very good fabricator and knows his trade.

How about a Raven that Airdale took in and did a stretch on it, and other mods? Any way to check with Brett?
As long as it is airworthy, I wouldn't care if it was Avid, Kitfox, Raven, Airdale, or Bastard.

I have the Arctic Sparrow Inflight mixture that actually raises and lowers the needles (they are threaded and screw in and out of the slide). I can lean mine out to a burn down if I want to in the mid range. Yours may not be adjustable enought to lean you down that far.

I am at sea level and cooler temps, but on floats, I know I get a better climb and more power to get out of the hole at 6500 than I do 6800, but that could be due to the different profile on the prop blades too. If 68-- work best for you, then by all means use it. Every plane is a little different!

    Leni,
When you said,"You can get it way lean if your just using pitch control and EGT to set the prop", i don't understand. Isn't the main needle almost all the way out of the jet, letting fuel by? Then if you lean it by decreasing the pressure in the fuel bowl, less fuel comes out. Maybe this is the same as reducing the throttle?
Also, the difference in climb on my plane between 6800 and 6500 is very noticeable in the seat, i don't have a vsi. I have a field down in a bowl, its 90+ oat, and i like to eat, so i need all the umph i can get ! Thanks, Bryce

This is one flyin I want to make one of these days. Dick Woodin is buddies with the guy that runs that place and he gets to go down and fly the old iron they have in there. I think most of those planes were new when Dick was in his prime and he probly flew most of them

Max TQ on the 582 is at 6500, so that is my take off power RPM. I keep WOT in till I level off and airpseed builds. I punch in more ptch to give me MAX RPM of 6450-6500 straight and level, then pull the power back. I know from lotsa hours that I can set up my cruise of 58-5900 RPM at 1150 on the EGT's and 5.4-5.6 GPM and my burn is clean and the engine is very happy. You can get it way lean if your just using pitch control and EGT to set the prop. If you lug the engine, it will lower the EGT's but it is really hard on the engine. Every once in awhile, I may get a wild hair and after I have the thing set up for cruise, I will go WOT and hold altitude to make sure I am set for max RPM of 6500. this seems to keep the engine and me very happy

    In Flight prop operation
Hey Leni and anyone else using an in flight adjustable prop (ifap) and mixture control(mc) on a 582,
How do you set your power in flight for cruise?
I have a gsc ifap and a Green Sky mc on my 582 powered mkiv.
I take off full rich full rpm 6700-6800 rpm, at 500 ft agl i start backing rpm down to 6200 until cruise altitude of 1500 ft agl, push over the nose and let the airspeed build, managing the rpm mostly with prop control to maintain 6000 rpm, and at this point back out some throttle, about 6 turns from full throttle (what i did w/ the fixed pitch before installing the ifap), and as airspeed builds, manage rpm w/ ifap pitch control. Once at a stabilized airspeed and altitude, i lean the mixture to 1100-1150 egt.
I have thought about leaving the throttle wide open and just using the ifap to control rpm and mc to reduce fuel burn.
My question is, how do you operate your engine, ifap, mc system? What do you think of leaving the throttle full open? Thanks for your input, Bryce
BTW: I baffled my radiators, mkiv style, and opened up the cowling outlet and installed a new trip strip so that my water temp never gets over 180 degrees.

With the shape of the door cutouts and a baggage door, I was leaning toward some sort of Avid B Frankenstein or something, but a friggin' Raven?
How in the hell do you get off calling a Raven an Avid+... tsk, tsk...

    [edit: here's another Raven]

That has me curious. It looks more like an early model KF rudder and fuse / door outline than an Avid. I wonder what the builder really did and what it is

Edit: According to the FAA database, it is a Raven. A kitfox/Avid clone.

Thanks for the info on it that you had. Cook mn is not far away from me and I was gonna call this fellow to see if I could fly down and take a look at it. Possibly go for a ride. It seems pretty cheap so of course I have some reservations. I'm curious to know more about the avid plus model as for a relatively low cost investment it may just be what I'm looking for.
