    Son's First Sheep!
I decided it was time to take my son sheep hunting this year. It had been a while since I had been (I think 7 years or so). We had a great time and you can't beat the beauty of the Brooks Range and the abuse your body can take and still have fun. He got this nice 7/8 curl that F&G aged at 9 years. I wouldn't have told him to shoot but we had a good look at it at 10 yards and then studied it in the spotting scope until I had counted at least 8 rings a half dozen times. (one of the smaller Rams was 10 feet when they walked into us). We thought they would continue to feed up the draw they were in but they popped up on the little knob we were on. Not many times they give you that much time to study them. I think they just couldn't believe that we were so close to them (but had the wind in our favor so they couldn't smell us). There's nothing like Sheep hunting except flying!

    Fabric Doors
Has anyone done without the aluminium on the cabin doors and just go fabric like the Cub? Pros or cons with the idea.........

    Thanks,

    Robert,
I was bored tonight and searched on Ebay auto parts / LED lights - there are about 200,000 posts. Saw some 15 LED WHITE
Back-up lights which look like they might replace your Grimes bulbs - Like 9.98 a PAIR - lots cheaper than those in Spruce if they will work.
Think I have a pair of LED lights at the auto parts store spotted - triangle, streamlined, going to check them out for taillight - wILL SEE if they flush mount - maybe could be mounted just aft of the position lights on wingtip - that is legal too -
If I buy them I will post a photo for you.

More photos as the work progresses. I think the first owner made the sponsons too deep. I need dimensions from a late model owner.

I was totally uncomfortable in the KF2 seats - the folding Airdale seats seemed to fit me better - I am (was 5' 8".
Being scratch-built, I raised the cabin roof 6", and mounted a nice 16"wide pair of Cabelas boat seats onto a stainless sheet on top of the front crosstube that normally holds the fiberglas seat - and added a similiar tube same height at the rear, and 4 "seat-rail tubes" for support. These give me a great view over the nose and are very comfortable. I made new brackets to move the pedals closer to fit my short legs.
Not saying you should be this radical - just saying, "explore your options, and make what suits you best". Be thankful that we are experimental and not bound by Cessna or Piper blueprints. Attaching a photo of my seats.
    Good re-building,

Because Aeropro CV offers kit sales in the EU only and the importer is selling Aerotrek SLSA's, they will not sell parts to unregistered owners for use on non-Aerotrek aircraft. Been there, tried that. I have, however, found very good dealer support as an owner needing parts, so no gripes there at all. Well, except price which is to be expected when dealing with the other side of the world.

I had hoped to use the tanks from the damaged wings in my Avid+ wings, but after the initial look I'm not so sure. The biggest issue is that the location of the rear spar hole in the Avid HH and Speed ribs is very high in the web compared to a KF4 and Aerotrek rib. As a result, the rear edge of the tank sets above the top of the Avid capstrip. I had the same issue installing Skystar wingtanks in my Avid Mk-IV (pics on the forum here somewhere), but this is much worse.

Actually, I'm thinking it may well be insurmountable without cutting a wedge out to lower the top of the tank and re-welding. Other than that problem area, the tank seems to fit in the profile of the special Avid transitional root rib used to match speed wings to the HH root rib. I was going to use the special root rib and another outboard of the tank, then step down to the standard speed rib.

KF4 fits the top curve of the tank ok but still a little low. Also, because the KF4-7 Riblett profile has some undercamber in the first half or the profile, the bottom of the tank falls below the lower capstrips. I'm disappointed, was expecting a better fit.

Pics show Avid standard speed rib, larger Avid transitional root rib (both w/ oval web lightening holes) and KF4 rib (triangular web lightening holes) placed on the Aerotrek wing. Didn't bother trying a KF 1-3 or Avid HH rib, way too much undercamber.

I checked the KF2 struts, and they are 3/4", and THAT was what was used in the test. Cant tell what wall unless I cut them, but bet that it was .035, like the KF3.

Some of the tubing in the tail leaf spring support area cracked, broke and forced the tail spring/wheel assembly to the side, where I had no control and went for a ride off the runway. All was well until the airplane went at an angle through a small drainage ditch. That finished off the lower longeron and a angled support tube. I have learned that the crack/ break is not a first, and some have switched to .049 walled tubing in this area.

Since the fabric is coming off for repairs, I am looking for improvements at the same time. The f/g seat has always been uncomfortable to me. Prior, I had considered removing it, and putting in a straight bench seat and use Oregon Aero seat cushions for comfort. Wondering what other have found. My son & I are both around 5'11 and fit should not be a problem. The other thing that I would like to do is to move the rudder pedals aft in order to raise the brake pedal portion to effect the correct brake geometry. Currently, the "shelf" of the firewall prevents adaquate pedal height.

    Open to suggestions for improvements....

The two I have were made by someone else - One has rivets, the other none - I would just sand and glue - you might use a heat gun to form them for a better fit, but sand after heating, and use Hysol to blend the edges too.
Sure glad I couldn't buy the lights for you!

Ed. FYI the KF fiberglass light mounts are now 12.25 ea and will require a bit of modification to fit the Avid tips but still easier than making from scratch, when I get them mounted I will post up some pics. also I saw you had rivets on the ones in the photos. do you think the rivets are necessary or would the hysol and fabric over everything be enough. Seems to me it would look a bit cleaner without the rivets.

OK - If the 7/8 x .035 wall will support 1050 to 15 Gs, Then where will I be with 1320 and .058 wall struts, without the rod ends?
    or possibly heavier rod ends?
A little correction here - the 3 has 7/8 - but the strut used in the test was a 2, which I believe, has 3/4 struts. Got to check mine.
Where are the experimental structural engineers with an answer? Please.......

New pair of wings for my Avid+... not!
Made a 24hr iron-butt round trip from upstate NY to Indianapolis last weekend to pick up some new wings for my Aerotrek project. Ain't they purty?

I ordered the wings on 5/18/12 from the Aeropro CV factory in Slovenia and they arrived at the dealer stateside on 8/7/12. As I understand, the ship left port on 7/9/12 and took 29 days to cross the pond. The factory is super busy (US production sold out through May 2013 + strong EU demand) so I'm happy they were able to fit my order into their production schedule within only 4-6 weeks. Decided to order uncovered so I could verify all was well under skin and save almost 50% vs. covered and painted.

And, yes, these wings will bolt right onto my Avid+. I can't help but wonder what kind of performance would result!

    Thanks Doug,
I see that the struts on the 3 were 7/8" x .035 wall, and the 4 was one inch diameter - but didnt get a wall thickness - Am guessing it was .049 ? I was considering going to 7/8 x .058 wall, or by using that size as a shim between the old 3/4 and a one inch x .058 wall. I have a good set of the old Piper J3 struts, but really think they are a lot heavier - got to weigh them.
Will pull the test page out of my book and see if daughter can copy it an post on here. The photos are bad quality. It is from the old Denny newsletter, I think.

    KITFOX STRUT TUBE SIZES?
Anyone have info on Wing Strut tube sizes and wall thickness for Kitfox 4 and later?
I have a copy of an article about Kitfox testing the 7/8" KF3(?) struts to 15G of 1050 GW before rod end failed. But no wall given.
Seems to me that these should be plenty strong for 1320 GW.
Avid sizes, wall & GW also appreciated.

@larr - I can add two comments: I am built rather low to the ground (ie., short legs 30" inseam) and found the sling seat more comfortable than f/g pan seat in my MV-IV. Both tended to catch the back of my thigh. That said, I found the f/g pan seat in my KF3 more comfy than the Avid sling seat, I think it offers a bit more of an upright seating position. The f/g pan seat in my KF4-1200, which for all intent and purpose appears to be -very- close but not exactly the same as the KF3 pan, seems even better to me. Maybe the KF4 foot well space, pedals or pedal location are slightly different, dunno if that factors. Oh, and another thing that likely contributes, I did not use the factory KF upholstery in either of my KF's. I use custom individual seat cushions to build up the seat thickness.
