    Hey Bob,
Does your exhaust system flex much? Thanks, Bryce

    Hi Bill,
I use the original set up which you describe as do most of us. THe main issue is the static port placement, as avid has you have an open filtered tube under the dash. The accuracy is highly suspect! Personally, I would invest my resources in a decent static port mounted on the side of the cowling. John Miller did that, hopefully he will chime in here and give his .02 attached is a pic of his set up. I use the airspeed needle as apoint of refernce but don't actually believe the number it's pointing at, must be a government needle
    Good Luck, Bryce

    pitot tube
I have an Avid Mark 4 STOL which I bought as a project. It has not flown. Am in process of recovering wings. I am not crazy about the pitot system on this bird. I like the look of the one Spruce has for about $150.00. Anyone have any suggestions ? The pitot tube on the plane now is just aluminum tube with a pipe fitting and a slight flare pointing into airflow.

Those are the ones Joey. I had to grind a little on the ID of clamps to make a good fit. Other than that no problems. Good luck. Russ.

I used the red/orange high temp cilicone "in" each joint, w/springs,
let setup before running the motor.
This motor has +- 60 hrs and is as clean as the day we put it on.
    No fumes or black gupe
I didn't know about the clamps or might have used them.

Water Supply line for a refrigerator works great! That is what is in mine. Another option is to hit up a big truck shop and use the air line that they use for the brake system. It is not too expensive.

I use the clamps also Joey and they work good, put antiseize where the two flanges meet and dont overtighten the clamps and they work great. They are a little spendy though. Randy

The black hose going through the spar on my Avid got smashed and is unusable. Does anyone know where to get new tubing ? It is 1/4" parker tube.

    Russ with these guys?

I was just looking at these today for $32 a piece and was wondering if they would work. I think if I got things lined up a little better it would solve my issue. I don't like the idea of hot exhaust blowing out under the cowl not to mention to the Carbon Monoxide risk.

Joey, I replaced my springs with the clamp kits from LEAH, and Lockwood. They are not cheep but work better then springs. Russ.

I've been trying to seal up an Exhaust leak on my elbow where the springs are. I think my whole muffler needs to come off the firewall some to better than angle where the elbow meets the manifold. I think my current ones are about 1" or so. Just curious if anyone else has already been there and done that or knows of a better set up than the elbow with springs.

Yeah, you guys are PURE GOLD to me. One guy who was going to sell me an Avid was going to train me up by first having me master fast taxiing. So tell me more about "fanning" the rudder and proper rudder operation . . .

    Hi Jeff,

Welcome aboard and congratulations on your new Avid. As you probbly already know, you will need to get the plane registered with the FAA and to do that you need to have all the building logs and pictures from the previous build history of your plane; and you will need the bill of sale for the kit from Avid Aircraft. Be sure you get these with the aircraft. With those critical items and everything else, you got a great deal. I fact, you got the ultimate quick build kit.

I live out in the Valley near Palmer and have my plane at Wolf Lake Airport. Let me know if you are in this area and we get together and talk Avids. Ther are several Avid and KitFox builder/flyers in AK on this forum so I am sure you will likely be near one of us. Also, if you are in the Anchorage area, you should join the EAA chapter 42 so you have additional knowledgeable builders and experts to tap into. A couple of us on here (JackAk and myself) belong to the chapter and we need more Avid/KF builders to compete with all the RV builders.

It will be great to have more local Avid/KF flyers to fly with.

To answere some of your questions, the recent post in the General Hangar section of this forum that Twister started talks alot about the flying characteristics of these planes. As far as the Annual; it is called a Condition Inspection for experimental airplanes. If you are the original builder you can get the Repairman Certificate from the FAA to do your own condition inspections. This may not be possible for you due to the advanced state of completion of your plane. If that is the case, you can still do all the work you want to on your airplane with the exception of the annual condition inspection which you will have to get an A&P to do.

The 582 has sat for 15 years with being fogged every year and hand rotated. No sign of corrision with the naked eye and none of the hoses show any sign of dry rot. That being said, it would be easy enough to crack it open and replace all the internal and external seals. The front leading edge of the wings are the only areas that are metalized. I live in Wasilla. I haft to admit that I am somewhat stumped on the electrical but I will probably be able to figure it out after research. Any input on that issue would be very helpful. The attached picture shows the strip for tying in electrical. This is where I am lost. I am assuming its like wiring a house. The main hot comes in and then all the accessories tie to the strip. The ground is tied to the frame. Also attached a picture of the engine. Looks good on the outside. I hope it is on the inside.

    Thanks

    Jeff

Welcome to the site...most thought it was a good buy
A lot of us saw the plane on craigslist and everyone had commented on the metalized wings
Do you know how long the 582 has been setting?
There are others in Anchorage that can help with project, you are in Anchorage??
Are the whole wings metal or just the leading edge?
The underside of the wing is "undercambered" for greater STOL preformance.

    AVID Heavy Hauler
    Hi everyone,

I am an Alaska resident and new to the forum and have transitioned from a quicksilver mx to an AVID Heavy Hauler.

Can someone give me a brief run down on this plane i.e. its flight characteristics, etc. Does this plane require annual inspections? I am getting certified sport pilot and then working on the certificate of air worthiness.

    Thanks for your input.

  20. avidchh added a post in a topic Avid towbar

    Ed,
I have 8" mains. The front is a 6" and is about 4" off the ground when hooked up. I've had it up to about 50mph without issue. Towbars are really for short hops, trailers for long distances. It's really not that legal without lights and the tires are not Utah DOT approved so I stay off state roads. I could add the lights and licensing but the local police and sheriffs have never bothered me, but then I only have about a ten minute drive from my shop or my home to the airport all on back city and county roads. Actually it's only ten minutes to most anywhere here.

    Hey Bryce,
Used it a lot before I converted to trigear and then changed the bend angle to accommodate and then up until the incident. Just about ready to fly again! Finished the rebuild and had it inspected last week. Need to do engine run ups then taxi testing then... go for it. The single square tube is clamped to the fork. It probably didn't need to be as heavy duty but I get carried away with 'it won't break now.' Did you ever put that wide gear on?

    Couple of questions about towing:
    1. What diameter tires on Avid, and what speeds do you tow?
    2. How do you make it legal? Our laws require that a "trailer" (Anything being towed) have brake lights in daytime, and taillights/marker lights on at night.
    3. Then there is that old bugaboo, "Licanse": Can it be state-licensed as a trailer? Maybe the towbar?
I know it is "Federally licensed", as an airplane - but not for being towed on a state road?
Bet I could get a ticket before getting to airport!

    P.S. Nice Job.

    Hey Stephen,
Nice Injuneering job on the towbar! I tried like hell to figure out how to do that before I got a factory towbar from Mike Rickets . Have you towed with that bar yet? Is the fork welded to the towbar? Bryce

Some pics of a towbar I fabricated and use with my Avid Trigear. Can easily be adapted for a tailwheel by changing the bend angle of the towbar.

I found the same results with my VG's . didn't seem to be much penalty if any with cruise, and no big difference in stall, but much more aeleron authority and putting them on the tail really helped with flare authority. I also sealed the gap in the elevator which helped a lot. If I remember correctly, I placed mine at the 10% point but with double sided tape. I used the tape in case I wanted to take them off or move them, but they are still held on with the tape two years later. Good Tape!
