Some problem with carbon fiber wicking petroleum if not sealed properly, that said it is being done. I don't feel that confident in my abilities. I loked over a carbon cub and it seemed everything was carbon fiber. Guess that is how you get $180,000 in one, nice but a few pay grades above me.

    Joey,
I can't figure it out either. What video box? I can get the link inserted, but not the U-tube player window.

You guys better eat Salads next year, not buttered lobster. Another year gone buy. It was the best weather I have ever seen out there. Larry, Doug, call my wife and I next year for your saturday night outing. We would like to join you guys. Nice seeing you throughout the show. Joey, we are hoping you can make it next year and join the fun.

Let me know how it goes too - I have only used two types of epoxy, and not being a chemist, don't have a clue about the ingredients - never even read them - The best I have heard is Caswell or something like that for sloshing....I am now a student, quietly listening and learning.
I am wondering about carbon fibre, or Kevlar in the layups for tanks, instead of just fiberglas?
The builder's manual for both Kitfox and Avids show how to relocate the drag tubes when installing a wing tank - both for the 6 gal and the 12 gal, I think. Please refer to the manuals - that is important, IMO. I eliminated one tube and moved the end of one when I installed TWO 12 gal tanks in each wing on mine, and the manual does not show 2 tanks, but I believe mine is strongly braced by the tanks.

This may sound silly, but got to ask: Why would you want to raise the skylight when you are not raising the overhead tubes? Does your head go between the tubes? I would not want my head to be between the tubes - that sure looks like a bump and a headache if something happens!
I raised my crossovers 6 inches, and put an upward bow in my overhead tubes, and wish I had bent the overhead tubes even higher. And I am only 5-8, but my seats are higher.
Hope you post photos when you have made the mods.

Ed, Ive seen this done to attach two pieces of lexan together (see pics)  my reason for using the FG/CF would be to eliminate the compound bends in the lexan and hopefully make it last longer. you could easily mold two small channels pointing fore and aft to insert the lexan pieces into if you wanted then just rivet or screw it all together. I'm having a real difficult time removing the paper from my 26 year old lexan so i'm going to just replace it anyway so I'm thinking if I just make it exactly what i want to (one piece wind screen and skylight for now) to use as a mold and just lay up the carbon fiber directly to the lexan. you could then just remove it trim it up add a small spacer down the center the thickness of the lexan you wish to use and add another flat piece to the bottom of that which would make the small channels pointing fore/aft to slip the lexan into. did that make any sense? the whole thing could then be attached to the the front carry through just as before.

My main concern at this time is how to fair the raised skylight back down into the wing

My friend did roll 2 coats of VER over the the inside of the last a foam after building the tank. I am going to coat the VER with the novalk epoxy after it dries. Kind of nervous about the epoxy by it self, the VER bonds to the glass well. The epoxy will have a fresh surface to bond to that way. The VER grabs the last a foam unbelievably well. We made some floor boards for my 180 and they were light tough and completely resistant to everything.

I looked at vinyl ester resin for coating the inside of my tanks before I built my wings but did not find any info about how good of a bond could be made between vinyl and the polyester.  Do you have some info about that?  I decided to use phenol novolac epoxy to coat the inside of the tanks because I was able to find plenty on information on that.  It would be good to know about vinyl ester resin

For the new tank are you planning to glue it to the spar like the original tanks?  If so I don't think you need to worry about removing the bracing.

For the new tank I would suggest using a couple of coats of neat VER after the layup to be sure that you don't end up with pin holes leaks, I fought those on my Q-2 tanks, and of course remember to test it before installing.

Maybe Ed would know about bonding VER to Polyester???

    Robert,
If you can visualize two aluminum angle strips (maybe less than 90 degrees) put back to back and riveted or bolted/screwed to the front carry-thru tube and covered with a shallow U-shaped, almost flat, light aluminum strip, where the WS and Skylight meet. Could be sealed with proper sealer for Lexan? Only one angle needed at rear of skylight.
    Does this help or confuse?
I would like to see a drawing of what you are thinking of - could have some compound curves in fg/cf???

    Raising the skylight
I didn't want to rob nates thread so I'm starting this one here.

Randy could you put up some pics of raising your skylight specifically how you faired it back down into the wings. I'm thinking of just building new butt ribs that are higher on the top and flat on the bottom with a completely open hole to view the fuel sight tubes through. if you were to do it again would you keep the changed dimensions you have or add/remove some of the height? also how you made the turtle deck attach would be great as well?

I've been having thoughts of making a carbon fiber transition piece that goes across above the front carry through tube that would have the two compound bends molded into it, this would allow for easily attaching a clear windshield to the front and a darker skylight to the rear and eliminate the bends in the windshield so hopefully they would last longer. has anyone done this yet?...thoughts?...pics?

    Gas tank
I have finally figured out a course of action for my gas tank. Looked inside it is very clean. I am going to cut the top of the tank out, within 3 inches of the edge. Will be covering entire tank with vinyl ester resin. I will then put top back in place after covering with same compound. Manufacturer guarantees it is completely alchohol resistant. The prep is ver important to the success of the job. Not complicated, just takes time. We are all used to that.

I only have 1 tank. This is what i am proposing for other wing. Removed stitts for recovering and am looking at wing. There is bracing in the bays that I would install a tank in. Can that be safely removed if after installation of tank I cover top and bottom of gas tank bay with .040 aluminum, riveted and epoxied in place. Will have to remove Rib to match other side. I would think the shear strength would be far greater than the bracing. If this will work will make new tank.

New tank will be made with last a foam and vinyl ester resin. Very straight forward to work with and completely alcohol resistant. One of my friends just made one. Very light, stiff as hell and easy to fab in complex shapes. Wall thickness is 1/4 inch so will cut down on volume some but finished product is great.

    Comments and suggestions, please

    Thanks Randy,
Anyone know where I can get some good photos and info on that plane?
My controls are like the Wittman Tailwind: Tube within a tube, and push-pull tubes, but attaching to the modified original Avid rib extensions, like the old German planes.

And now "King O" (as Ed says) has his socialist cronies out recruiting people to get them on welfare programs.  Once they are on, the are "addicts" and will vote the for those who feed them for life, and for generations.  There is no shame to it anymore.  It's just an option; you can work if you want or you can live on welfare if you want.  No big deal if you are lazy and sponge off of others because the President says it's just fine, and not your fault; it is always something or someone elses fault.  And those filthy working slobs are just not paying enough taxes!

I would recommend the wide gear; there are several to choose from including the wide Airdale bungee gear or bush gear, or Grove spring gear.  The wide stance make the plane a lot easier to control on the ground and you can recover from some not so great landings to take another turn around the patch instead of repairing your plane.

Ed, you might see if you can copy the Just Highlander; they are an Avid spinoff with flaps and ailerons

Very cool!  It is definately God's creation.  The fields of purple fireweed in a sea of green was so impressive as you fly over it.

I just took a few pictrures; guess I was too busy fishing.  I especially like the one of Leni taking off in his buddy's PA12 to ferry his son and GF home.   On the way home I missed a really cool opportunity to get a picture directly under Jeff through my skylight but my camera was in my fishing pack and out of reach.  Maybe next time....

I raised my skylight by increasing my butt ribs by 1" in the front and 2.5" in the rear.  Very glad I did it.
