is this coolant derived heat or an element of some sort?

I had to raise the tail on my KF3, set it up on a hilside w/ blocks until the nose was waaay down.

Very nice, keeps looking meaner every time you post a picture of that beast,Randy, do you have a close up picture of the small triangle side windows in the cargo area, not sure what the best way is to mount them in there,

Wowser that is some serious rubber, how cool is that! MeThinks it might be the 'SuberShoeAvid' now.

But until KF goes full poly I ain't biting...  I would like to see just how hard it would be to fit Just Highlander poly wing tanks into an Avid HH profile wing, been told it would not take much. Also, at one time I looked at trying the Rans S9 poly wing tanks into my Avid speed wings (pics below). At first blush it looked doable, and I really liked that you could retain the drag tube omitted with the Avid and KF oem tanks.

A lot easier to keep a copy of the Koch chart in your bag than a laptop!

Kitfox doesn't/won't sell the in-tank style replacements.

They only sell the complete new tank kit, which includes everything you need to install, from caps to hoses. Personally I'm not a fan of the in-tank fix. Too many joints that can leak, plus the loss of capacity. Just my opinion.

Very nice Joey, I like it start where you can and work up. I'm still flying my paper airplanes but hope to ketch up some day

Someday when I'm rich and famous like Randy.......

I need to navigate too much pavement to even consider them. Looks good on you, though.

(Is that an Ivo medium or ultralight?)

Not to be outdone by Randy I put some Bushwheels on my Carbon Cub today!! They are the main tires off a T-28 trojan. Took a little modding to get them on the stock wheels. No noticeable difference in cruise speed but it sure lands better on the sand I've been flying off of!!

I too thought about damage but unless it's me walking into them I think they will be okay. I think it's pretty well known in the airplane world that jury struts are a hands off area when it comes to moving the plane around but then again I've been fooled before. I've had people grab ahold of my horizontal stab to "help" put the plane away. Once they are doped and covered in some sort of film they should be strong enough I would think. If not it's an easy fix...been flying RC's long enough I've gotten good at super gluing balsa back together!

I used the ACS stuff on my horizontal stab struts.  Works pretty good but has kind of a funky leading edge.  I ended up covering it with duc tape to smooth it out.  Thinking balsa trailing edges from the hobby shop might be the way to go for the jury struts.  My only concern is about how easily they might get damaged

    How many "tops off"?

Rad cap off and bleed screw out and run her?

It is a nice piece, but it came with the airplane. I think it was standard issue with the KF kit back in the 90's. i know some have replaced them with a larger expansion tank.

Now that is just Badass!! And it makes it even better knowing they will get used. I've seen many a Maule and 180's since I started this backcountry flying stuff that have 29's, 31's, and 35's and the nastiest stuff they land on is maybe a gopher hole in a mowed strip.

Fairing horizontal stab struts and jury struts
Been looking at some ways to fair these struts. It's more of a cheap tinkering project to do the plane more than anything and certainly can't hurt anything. Rans aircraft carries this fairing for a 1/2"  tube. I plan on using it for the horizontal struts and I think I am going to try either gluing balsa wood onto the back of my jury struts or using some of the trailing edge material that spruce sells and covering it.

Did you build that piece that the radiator cap screws onto? I am getting ready to re plumb my system. That looks nice an simple.

    Phat Tires
    You got to have them!

I didn't think I would make this jump but if a little bit is good, well....  Starting with the 8.00 play tires on my MKIV, to the 21's (Nancos), 24's (ATV tires), 26's (AK Bushwheels), and now to 30" Airstreaks.  I've got to say, they are pretty cool looking, if I can just keep Larry and Doug from insulting my manhood.    It ended up being a bit more involved than I originally though it would be.  I had an extra set of wheels from the unfinished MKIV kit sitting in my hangar so that would let me put the 30's on a separate set of rims and keep my smaller 26's for quick change out for longer trips.  They required 2 spacers per wheel rather than the single spacer I was able to get away with on the 26's; plus the longer wheel bolts and a pain getting them mounted, and more bolts after I broke one and determined the first set were just a little too short.  Then the axles were too short so had to build a new set of axles since the current ones on my plane and the parts kit were too short also.  Finally got it done tonight but after weeks of rain it is still raining so no test flight tonight.  Hopefully tomorrow will tell the pro's and cons.

So far, the pro's: Super cool look, lighter wallet, great angle of attack, at 6'1" I am able to stand up easily under the wing, at 5 psi the tire doesn't even bulge so it should really suck up the rocks!

Con's: Kind of costly with the extras needed, 7.5 lb per tire/wheel weight gain (not too bad considering the size difference), will definately slow down the cruise speed (yet to be determined).

Photo's show the plane on the 21's, 26's and 30's

    All fun!

I did that for the ribs initially - Lots of waste for a thin part tho.I watched the water jet cut out some metal parts - the water was milky, and believe it had soluble oil in it. They want too much to make initial setup anyway. I can get close enough with bandsaw and belt sander to make them a close match to my pattern - It aint rocket science!

You're better off to make a jig and use a router.  That is how Avid and Kitfox used to make them.

Using a water jet does not mean the workpiece is submerged in water.  There is a water tank below the workpiece to "catch" the jet after it cuts.

No, but once you have the factory specs or your own baseline performance benchmark, you can use a Koch Chart to calculate the approximate temperature and altitude adjustments for aircraft takeoff distance and rate of climb. See Publication FAA–P–8740–2 • AFS–8 (2008) HERE
