It was a great day. I didn't get Madison up that day, just not enough time. Now that the days are getting longer I will try to get her up again. She was eight when she got her first ride. I felt she fit the seat belt safely then. Megan gave me I Sutterfly Photo book of our trip to Alaska. She did a great job with it. Half of the book is you taking us flying that day. We are both looking forward to coming back up.

Thanks Randy...you answered a question that I had...I was thinking about strengthening it with glued in plywood panels in the seat truss. Is that enough?
They are not removable axles. I didn't know that was an option...I can see that it would be handy.
Thanks again for sending me the numbers on your gear! I really like the height of the gear, it will probably reduce the risk of me taking the flapperon in the cranium!
By the way, the guy that built the gear didn't want to put the middle leg on my gear because the back leg was so long and he was afraid the center mount would reduce the flex of the back leg. However, he welded the step bar in because he thought the back leg might flex too much without it. Whatever? I'll try it like it is and go from there!

    Thanks,
    Ron

The clutch is on and it is fantastic!!!! I have 45's installed with 3 turns and could see going leaner. But for now, I'm very happy. I have her running at 1500 with just a bit of stutter. I'll continue to work on smoothing her out.
Impact driver is a must. Flywheel came of with a 3-arm puller. Found evidence of loctite on flywheel. Not cool. About broke my puller getting the thing off. Torque wrenches for assembly and some fresh gear oil.
Noticed water temps get a bit higher without the airflow?

Now I have a "turbine fox"!!!! My friends are jealous....

    Hey Mark,

Looks like you had a great day too.  Neat to see all those turkeys and deer; and looks like you have quite a bit of snow.  Love to see your granddaughters too.  What a great time to share with them.  Have you taken them flying with you?  I am anticipating taking my grandson out when he gets old enough; just wondering how old is old enough?

I got out again on the 26th taking the father in law of the Commander's secretary (a long story; I flew her and her husband, an AF sergant, around this fall and this was their Christmas present to his father while he was up visiting over Christmas).  Anyway, it wasn't quite as nice a Christmas day with the overcast but I got a picture with a little sun coming across the glacier at about 2:00 PM as it was getting ready to set.  I need to work on getting some more wildlife pics though; they are hard to get good ones of.

    Hi Ron,

That looks really nice.  The hydrosorbs are preferred by a lot of the Cub drivers up here because they seem to asorb a lot and do not have the rebound bounce of the bungees.   I have a couple of friends who have them on their cubs.

The one thing that you might review is if the stock lateral frame of your fusalage between the cabane attach points may need some strengthening.  This will recieve a compression load between the attach points now instead of the bending load on the seat truss that it was designed for with the stock bungee gear.  The compresion load in this area seems to be the place most of the avids and KF's have failed when using the cabane gear, although the compression springs stack solid and the hydrosorbs will not tend to do that.

Just wondering; are the axles welded in place or are they replaceable?

I had a great Christmas Flight too, saw a few deer and turkeys yarded up, but later on it was even better with my Granddaughters.

If he is not able to get back into business, I would be interested in buying the jigs and whatever rights he has, I am Medically retired, but not by choice, I would love to have a side business that I could turn into something better, I wish him the best of luck, but I hope he keeps my offer in mind.

Well, it has been a long while, but I thought I would update this post. I decided to design my own gear but have somebody else build it because I wanted it welded right! I can weld, but I thought the landing gear was too critical for me to experiment with! That being said, I had to weld brackets on the front mounts to provide attach points for the cabane V. The gear measures 32" Tall and 73" from axle plate to axle plate. I stole rough numbers from Randy because I liked the AoA on his Avid.
Steve Furjersi at Experimental Aircraft Fabrication inc built the gear for me, and I bought his unique suspension system too. He is a great guy and he really helped engineer a cool gear for my Magnum.
I'm attaching pictures, so take a look, and throw spears if you have them, because I want all of your input!

    Thanks,
    Ron

Airdale cables - they attach to anything!   Actually, she only gave me the left-over cans and stuff from the Christmas dinner - I had to assemble it without any instructions!
This is what 3 years of AMT College will train you to do!
If I had bigger cans, I could make a Cessna!

    Bryce,
Maybe you didn't have enough spring - the best I have seen had the entire surface covered with springs - as an alternative, if you have a stud welder, you can put studs all over it like Cessna, but that may cause rust unless you use stainless studs.   I still like water heat better!
I guess you remembered to put an outside cover over the spring?

Hey guys, I tried the set up and found for the best heat, do not use the spring wrapped around the muffler. Bryce

Here is the robopilot she got for me.

I am looking for a straight set of KF 3 or four wings to go on my KF 3.   A straight KF 3 right wing would do the trick as well.

Thanks guys I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a dimension that would cause a vacuum that I didn't know about.

I saw that   . The original poster was asking a valid question. Your post had some good numbers but I think most people passed it by to talk about how much they spent on their plane. Before too long they'll be trying to see who's d**k is bigger.

Yes, you keep reminding me that these are not vents, but tubes that put a positive pressure to ensure fuel flow - However, once they are stopped up by a bug or something, then the fuel flow will cause a vacuum, and that is why Piper put the tiny hole in the backside of the tube to prevent a vacuum.

    Hey Leni,
Did you wrap a screen door spring type spring around your muffler or is it just unrestricted airflow going through the muff assembly? Thanks, Bryce

  25. SuberAvid added a post in a topic Double bungees

I think both Ed or Bernard have said it well.  I made my safety cable pretty long so they will only come tight if a bungee totally failed; and I positioned them under the bungees so they would not cut the bungees.  This works better since I have 5 1/2" taller gear and the 30" Airstreaks but length of the cable should keep the prop off the ground even if one tire is flat.  I like the idea of the horizontal bungees as a better soft arrest safety though and think I may go to that.  I remember reading that post too and think there were some calcs of the movement, but it would be easy to calculate by simple geometry of the arc the wheel travels and the arc the bungee leg travels as the gear rotates around the connection points.  Same angle of rotation for both.  The distance the bungee ends separate increases at a rate as a square of the radius so it is the perfect way to arrest the gear travel with no real affect to the initial flex of the bungees.  I think I would start with a 1/2" dia. bungee and just make it fit snug but not tight for starters.  I have had real good success making my own bungees by making the loops and wrapping them with safety wire using the tie right tool (can't remember the correct name for it right now) but it make a nice double-double safety wire tie that is very tight.
