Hi,

Do any of you see issue with using a sand blaster on an airframe.  I know I can run different media through it.  What is your suggestions.  I have lots of minor surface spots of rust on my airframe.

Thanks

If it has rust, then it is steel - use aluminum oxide media on it for easiest cleaning - However I have seen play sand used, but you have to screen it first to get the rocks out. A large tarp can catch the media and you can reuse it. Primer Paint asap.

Aluminum sheet needs plastic beads to clean it.

Harbor Freight has a small self-contained blasting unit for $35 that I have been considering trying, as it would be easier to use than hooking up the big compressor to the pressure tank blaster - don't know how well it will work tho.

Ihave experience with the HF soda blaster. OK for the money. Did the job, but it needs a lot of air volume and tends to be a bit finicky(sp)? Prolly do well on paint, but I bet would struggle with powder coat.

They used Aluminum Oxide blast on my airframe.  SInce it is softer than the base metal, theoretically it should not damage the underlaying good metal.

Be sure you have enough compressor not to get moisture through the blaster.  That can cause embedded rust to form, meaning constant corrosion issues in the future.
