Matanuska River Pics

Decided to take a stroll last night about 9:00.  Took pictures of the Matanuska Valley on the way.  Enjoy.

 

Randy, Leni,  strange wind up in that valley.  No indication of wind on the ground but at 2000 ft I was doing 105 up the valley, 56 back.  Definitely a dangerous place if one does not plan that trip at a safe time.

That can be a real wind tunnel in the Matanuska valley.  Usually the wind is going the other direction; down the valley.  I flew into Anchorage that same night and was surprised that the wind was out of the south, so almost straight up the Matanuska valley.  When it is from the East or Northeast, as is most common, it can be pretty turbulent in there so I typically try to fly it when the wind is pretty calm.  I was in there one time and it felt like I was trying to keep my plane balanced on a bubble, really weird.
