    Airports turning into ministorage
I don't know if anybody else is having trouble with this or not, but I moved 50 miles north of my old home and my Hangar space was/is 30 miles south of that, there are 4 airports within 30 miles of where I live now and after checking with them they have very few planes at the field , complain about fuel sales , and admit they have rented out most of their hangar space to people storing tractors , cars, and junk. One of them just had a new taxiway put in by government dollars but doesn't feel they should have any responsibility to aircraft owners , flying has kind of diesd off in this part of the country I wonder why.

I got to spend time working on my plane, still one wing to cover but alot of the little odds and ends got done sometimes thats the best birthday present you can get. Today I will take it down to where I keep it hangared for our FlyIn Breakfast and put it on display, I figure on alot of people laughing, but my gorilla welds are in non structural locations or hidden by silver.

  5. Trackwelder added a post in a topic Where to buy Speedwing 18 gal tank?

Back in my Army days, we had a chance to learn how to load a C5 with dump trucks and semi tractor trailers, they only worried about the weight front to back not side to side, I think that the ailerons would cover that amount of roll. You may be down to building your own tank, use a epoxy resin that will withstand alcohol even if you don't plan to burn any, you can make a mold out of styrofoam build the bottom and sides to shape and remove the foam, put ribs in where they would normally go and lay the top on with precured glass then glass in the edges. If that is more than you want to do I am sure someone could do it for you. I would do it but you would have to supply the rib shape and materials. You would also need one heck of a bladder to make use of 36 gallons of fuel.

Contact Airdale, they had the tanks a couple of months ago when I decided to go plastic. I don't know if he is using alcohol resistant resin, but he should be able to build them.

I had looked at the VW conversions myself, hopeing to find a good relatively inexpensive 4 stroke but the vw is a bit on the heavy side. I know that there are subarus flying out there, but I believe the weight to be real close, and the horsepower is better. What model of avid are you planning on putting it in?

Well, I guess it is time for me to learn to post pictures, I have the fuselage at home and the wings at the hangar. I will try and get pictures of both today and show my progress, This pe that I flew in before I bought it, Scared the crap out of me when I washed it and the paint came off, so I figured a simple recover took the time to learn how to fly and now I am getting ready to put the cover on. I am 30 miles away from my hangar but at least Ihave had a garage to work in, now I am moving 50 miles north and buying a new house across the street from the school my wife works at but no garage yet. On the good side the closest airport with hangars available is only 15 miles away and the hangar rent is less than half $550 a year, and it still has a grass runway as well as a concrete to bad not to many people are flying, it is sad watching a cherokee six sit tied down outside for 10 years, the owner moves it every 3 or 4 to a different airport but that is the only time it flies.

    Hanger rash on Flaperons
I wish I had a camera, but my wife is the only one who understands enough about posting pictures anyhow. How much hanger rash can we get away with on the Avid Flaperons? I have a few slices that I think I could patch with epoxy and a couple of small dents, These came off a flying plane, but, I don't know what margin I can get away with, Any ideas?

    Battery placement
I have a 582 rotax for an engine, plan on using a belly radiator, am interested in where I should put the battery, I have heard of people mounting them every where from the firewall to the back of the seat to the tail of the plane, wich location should I use in order to keep the center of gravity towards the rear of the envelope?

  18. Trackwelder added a post in a topic Painting of the A/C

When I bought my plane someone had used latex over the original finish, it washed off in big sheets with the garden hose. Your results may vary especially if you do a proper prep job before painting. It all worked out in the end, when I removed the covering to redo it I found that the longerons had been rusted through so I basically had to start over.

I have a rotax 582 and am considering putting the battery in the tail, how many have done it and was it worth it. I have an A model that is highly modified to Mark IV standards but have not covered it yet so I am not sure about weight and balance. what size cable do you recommend for the wiring?

I am sorry to here about the truck, I would be just about ready to give up if mine went too. I had another visit with the surgeon and he reduced my lifting capacity to just 5 pounds, with no sitting standing or walking for more than 5 minutes at a time, and I am getting desperate to get back in the air, it got so bad I went down to the local airport hoping to grab some airtime with another pilot, I was even willing to split fuel, perfectweather and not a plane in 12 hours. I Know this is off topic but hopefully things start getting better for you and just to make it totally clear I don't want anything from anyone if I can't get it on my own.

I am sorry for your loss, but as far as theft goes, you start looking at those closest to you, It is a shame that your family won't let you purchase your fathers tools, but I wouldn't be surprised if they get borrowed by one of the loudest against you paying a fair price. You can choose your friends but you can't chose your family.

I know how it feels to have tools stolen, I left on vacation a few years ago, the first in a long time and came home to find my garage cleaned out, rollaway welders torch they got it all, my brothers all said how sorry they were that I got robbed. 2 years later I walked into my brothers garage, the one who doesn't turn a wrench on anything, his idea is charge up the credit cards until he can't get anymore credit and then file bankruptcy. Guess what I found, my rollaway my welders my torches my compressor with serial numbers removed and his name written on them, shined up like they were art I still can't get him to admit he took them but I have been collecting plenty of his security cameras it would have been cheaper for him if he had just given me back my stuff.

I was wondering what motor you had on the lawn motor, because I have been through a similar experience with the Ford 8N and the Bush Hog, it fired only once or twice before the engine quit, even though I was still sitting on the Tractor the experience was quite similar as the wire wrapped around the mower spindle, Chasing cattle back into the pen after that experience was not a chore I want to repeat.

I have been watching that engine on Barnstormers and wondering how low the price would have to go before someone took it on, looks like somewhere around $25,000 was the last asking price for the manufacturing rights and parts finally got it done. I wonder why it didn't sell any better but if the numbers are right it will make a good engine if the bugs are out of it.
