Buying a motor...for an Airplane...in a Bass pro parking lot...Who Would Do That? We all, had a good laugh over that.
You are so right....While I was buying a motor... the little lady, was bringing out new tile for the kitchen...

Well....here it is. My RX1 in a bucket. This is me (on the left) and Jim from Spa City. We met in the Bass Pro parking lot.
I think this will be my opening pic for my build thread (yet to be named). Mostly writing this to say what an absolute pleasure
it was to work with Jim, and him getting me this motor. His business is getting crazy, and it couldn't happen to a better guy.
Being honest and straight forward...is everything..to me, at least..and it shows, and is paying off for Jim. He is getting
overseas calls for motors. So if you need an RX1 or Apex motor....Call Jim...607-329-8676

I have had a couple of different tail wheel set-ups...but I now have the 8" Matco pneumatic. By far the best I have used
so far...Going to try that shock in the tail next. Not that I need to soften my tail hits... It isn't called a tail dragger ...for nuthin

I am doing the Yamaha conversion...and so selling FWF... motor mount, 582, cheek radiators...EVERYTHING...except the C box..
This motor has 102 hours on it...Grey head...Hacman system...exhaust w/heat. Would rather sell as bolt on package...
I flew this motor one week ago...still has winter jets in it. It has been flawless, it's whole life. John O
Still has oil injection and runs Amsoil. Throw in last gallon...extra jets...spark plugs etc. $3000

Well....should have listened to you guys.
The sled I had my eye on, got sold out from under me. I spent 3 weeks setting up ...and
one weekend, driving all over creation...and in the end...nothing.
So...I called Jim in Ballston Spa....and he is hooking me up!! (Thanks Y-fox)
He is meeting me half way...next weekend...How cool is that !
Had my last flight on skis, Monday....just snuck that in....Took it into the hanger...Sat up my X-Y axis laser... and took some measurements.
First thing I noticed was FW to prop hub was under 24"...Everything I have read...says the RX1 is 27 + Can you say cowl Mod...!!!
Everyone is going with straight through thrust line...Right? No 3 degree offset, like the 582....(I could have missed something...)
I have been flying this 582 grey head and have just over 100 flawless hrs on it... Am thinking of selling complete FWF (except C box ) of course
Motor mount, cheek radiators, Hac-man system, exhaust....Everything...mounted...ready to Bolt on. Somebody should want that...

works for the power company, and has been out of town. He is restoring power to the Noreaster victims...
Don't know when he will be home, so I have expanded my search...just in case.
I am roaring to go....Steel came yesterday...

have to be a lot more "plug and play"...before I am comfortable with it. This build
will be enough of a challenge for me...John O

Exactly the reasons I chose rx1! ... all stuff I can handle.
In 3 years I'm sure I'd go apex, but I want some other pioneers to get it all figured / proven out! LOL!
And sky4play, you on the FB group? Make sure you contact Jim Hensel there. He can get you an rx1 motor with all needed to run it starting at $1750 + shipping!
There's just no way you can beat that price (if you count any value to your time in finding a sled.. tearing it apart.. selling off extras...)

I believe that the bolt on gearbox, was for the APEX, fuel injected motor....while the adapter, C box...was for the RX1
carbed motor.

Absolutely true....The rock tossing is a problem in Alaska, no doubt. All you land on is rocks...
Now I land on mostly grass...not a problem. I am with Ed on the axles...I would like to, at some point,
upgrade from these 3/4 inchers...

I land totally off airport... and that thin line tread ...makes little difference.

I...for one, am delighted that Teal is going to continue to make the adapter for the RX1. Many
others are on the verge of jumping into this conversion, and I think are more comfortable with carbs as well...
What better timing...Winter is winding down...Sled prices will be dropping...
Hope to have an engine in hand soon..

Nice to see a little chunk of Alaska....again. I still have land off of Larson lake, outside of Talkeetna.
Also have an ex wife in Palmer (we won't go there)...

I have the 6" rims and the 21" Desser tires...which I really like,... but I have never had the option of an 8"...

I am waiting on pulling the trigger, on a motor, until I
hear back from Teal. I don't know if he has anymore adapters for the RX1. I have a C box on my 582.
Hoping to get started during the "mushy month" coming soon...

You guys got me sooo fired up about this motor, when I went through this thread, a couple months back.
Since then, I have been checking on sleds to buy...and all the components needed for such an undertaking.
I emailed Steve and he wants $2300 for his headers and says he has 5hrs on the Apex motor. I still think the
RX1 and carbs are a better choice (for me)...I can work on carbs.
I worked many years as a millwright, and can build most anything...given enough time and money..
So, I plan to build the motor mt and exhaust...possibly air box. But, anything can change at any time...
I guess, what I am really doing... is rambling on... trying to keep this thread going...trying to inspire..
Love all your work...postings etc.. Just... GIVE ME MORE...
I realize that I am 2 years out...from the initial hype. That's right...don't follow me in the stock market...John O

I am with Vance...a lot of good advise there...
You need to start with your prop pitch....(It is a crazy dance..)
Then, tune motor
1200 scares me and I would up your main...just to be safe,... and a 5 or 10 jump will never make you cold.
Mid-range will always give you the most worry...because you are starting to unload
I run 180 in the winter and 170 in the summer...I also run the Hacman system, which I built from ebay supplies and
use every time...Nice to have some control. There are varying opinions on this system, but I like it.
Things will come together for you...John O

Beautiful Bird..
I got an hour or so in today, as well. Landed on a popular lake and talked
to some ice fisherman. Shot some footage with the gopro mounted inside...
Learned what a bad videographer/narrator/subject I am. Now I need to learn editing..
Those days on the snow sure are special. Hoping to repeat tomorrow...John O

If I remember correctly...They had to be pre '95 and most seemed to prefer '93 or '94 models...couldn't have the HO crank either.
This is what I remember from Ron Davis....But, it has been awhile
