After I cut access holes in my tank, I saw all kinds of shit inside of it. Called my friend in MPLS that has worked on Avids for years including tank repairs. He said not to worry about it to much, it is quite common.

Got the Pro Seal in last week. Let it cure over the weekend. Then patched the access holes. Put gas in it let it sit for a day. Moved the wing up and down and side to side, no sign of leaks. Reglued tank edge to rear spar. I'll let that cure, then I'll putty the tank and fiberglass the tank to around the rear spar.

Just pumped the last of tho proseal in tonight. Let that cure for a couple of days. Then patch the entry holes and put gas back in to check for leaks. Next week I will hit it hard.  Sure is a lot of old loose resin inside the tank.

I have the wing opened up and ready to patch. Going to cut a couple of holes above the leak and put Pro seal in, then fiber glass over the holes. Yes I think I can glass between the curve of the tank and spar.

My tail ribs behind the tank have some of the varnish coming off and the glue on the ribs is dried and crumble because of the gas on them. This couldn't have happened in just a week could it? I think it has been leaking into the back of my wing for a long time.

Yes, it looks like about 6" of the top seam that is bad right in front of the rear spar.

Got my wing home today. Opened it up and this is what I found. It looks like the top trailing edge of the tank wasn't formed right. You can see how it is concaved. The fiberglass along this part is all soft. Leaking pretty bad all along it.

No, never ran a drop of booze gas through it. Going over to the airport tommorrow and take the wing off and bring it home. Should know what went wrong by tommorrow night. I'll take pictures and let you guys know. Talked to my friend in MPLS and he has repaired a few leaking Avid tanks. I think I will try to repair mine instead of going with the plastic insert tanks. I don't want to add another 15lbs if I don't have to.

    Gas tank leaking
Damn.  Went to the airport last night to go flying. Saw what looked like moisture on my wing behind my tank. No dew it was bubbled paint. The two rib bays behind the tank were full of gas. Major leak in tank. Go back over Sunday and take the wing off and bring home to repair.

Checked my Avid manual tank pictures, they look the same as yours. Three rib bays wide. I think these are 14 gallons.

I set my flaps at 15. I did notice on landing with a little cross wind I ran out of flaperon.

My Bandit seemed to fly the best at about -1 or level.

I did a high speed taxi 30 some years ago in my T-craft when I was first learning to fly. I ended up in a standing corn field. I learned one thing, its balls to the walls or nothing.

    Leni,
Most of my flying is done local. I use premium car gas with no boose in it. Can I mix and burn 100LL in my 503 if I need gas at a airport ?

Measured my takeoff distance tonight. With the brakes on and at full power, after rolling about 140' with the tail up I pulled full flaps, broke ground at 160'. Tried it again with no flaps. Broke ground at about 200'.  My prop was set for cruise though. This weekend I will play with the pitch to see if I can improve on this.

    Takeoff distance
Just wondering what everybody's takeoff distance is in feet ? Next time I fly I will have to check mine.  The fastest I took off, circled and landed was 45 seconds. My new F7a's are working great. It makes it a new handling airplane. Set them at about -1 or level. The flaps are set at 15 degrees.

    F7A's
    Ak,
Set my F7's to -6. Could only get my flaps to 10 degrees because my stop bolt was to long. Went to test fly it with 10 to 15 mph gusty winds. Up down trim was way off no big problem I'll just adjust elevator trim. Man the flaperon control felt like the airplane was fighting me. You said do not set it at -6. If I go less will this take some pressure off the stick. Rudder control did seem better. Next time I fly I will wait until I get calm winds. Just to gusty tonight. Tail wheel works good except I have to get some slack out of the linkage, then it should be fine.

  22. Bandit added a post in a topic Double tail spring

You have to also remember if you are folding the wings and transporting your plane, that will add a considerable amount of weight on to your tail. It puts
lots of stress on that single small spring. I cut 2" off of my tail wheel spring today and installed it. Thought I could get the back bolt on without cutting a hole in my fabric, after a 1/2 hr of swearing I had to get out the razor blade and go to work. With just a bit  more filing of the bolt head the bolt fell right in. So now I get to patch some fabric. I had my inspection cover placed so I could get at the front bolt. Not knowing they would come out with a double bolt spring. When I cut the short spring I cut it straight off. When I got it from Airdale it was rounded on the end. Would a straight cut put more stress on the main spring or wouldn't this matter. I see the Kitfox top spring is rounded also.

Checked my weight and balance, I to am at 50# on the tail. With my cg at 15.45. I am going to cut my spring as short as I can to. Thanks for your help.
Some times I need a little direction. I did put a inspection hole by the front bolt. I think I can get two fingers behind that diagonal tube to get the back bolt in. Try to get everything done this week.

So you have 51# extra weight in your tail, and you would like to add more? I think my CG is at around 15.45". Dean said it will make a new airplane out of it if you move your Cg back? What does it do. Maybe I should add both tail springs if that would help? How much tail spring are you going to cut off? Could you get the second bolt in without cutting the fabric? I think I can with a bit of swearing. I also have a dumb question. When I install my F7a's I need around -6, does that mean it is -6 with the leading edge of the flaperon up and trailing edge down?

    Double tail spring
    Akflyer
Got my F7a's and the double tailspring yesterday. I see the new spring is a little thicker than my old one. Why couldn't I just use it as a single spring. If I use it as a double it adds more weight and seems like it would be to stiff for my Bandit. I am assuming after I drill the hole for the second bolt I need to grind the head of the bolt down to fit between the longerons. It looks like a real tight fit. I am hoping I can get the bolt in without cutting a hole in my fabric. I think I will cut the spring down some to shorten it up so I get a little more angle to my airplane on the ground.
