I installed full Lexon doors which are two pieces and made my skylight and windsheild in two seperate pieces also. Still dealing with cracking problems though.

Yes, you are right. My airspeed is off about 7mph. At 76 IAS, my ground speed is around 69mph. I am using a Tiny Tach for rpm. I am going to try pitching my prop down so I show around 6350 on takeoff. It seems if I keep my IAS above 76 my airplane flys so much better, anything under it seem's sluggish. Can I run the 503 at 6000-6100 cruise? Would it be any advantage to use a C gear box, with a 3.47 ratio turning a 72" 2 blade prop?

Could I take one blade off and try it as a 66" 2 blade or is that to short?

3 blade or 2 blade prop
Right now I am using a 3 blade 66" IVO prop with a 2.58 B gear box. Would I get a little more performance if I took one blade off, or should I have a 72" 2 blade to get more? Right now I am turning 6050 rpm on take off. At cruise I am showing 5750 rpm to get 70 mph.

I should rephrase what I said. The fabric is ok, but it flutters some between the landing gear legs which causes some cracks in the polytone. The worst problem has nothing to do with the fabric, but after about 900hrs of 2 stroke residue blowing on the belly fabric, it is solid black with exhaust residue. I'm not real good at keeping it clean.

I used heavy fabric on the belly and light fabric on the rest of the airplane. Everything looks like new except the belly fabric.

Why not go with the 503, it is the most dependable 2 stroke you can buy. I now am closing in on 900 trouble free hours of flying. I am not sure but I think my Bandit is one of a few Avids with this many hours. The way I have it set up now it is a really good single place airplane and a fair two place plane. Most of the guys I have talked to with a 912 or Subaru's have way less time on them. With the extra weight of the bigger engines I have to think they are a good single place airplane that cost a whole lot more. My 503 burns 5 gallons an hour. Gas at $3.50 a gallon for 900 hrs would be around $15750. If I had a 912 burning 2 gallons an hour it would be around $7875. So in 16 years I have been flying mine, I would have saved $7877 dollars in fuel. I can not justify a $24,000 engine because of fuel burn. To me I think Dean designed these airplane to be light and simple. When I look at a 912 and Subaru installation's it amazes me how they can get all that stuff under the cowling. They may be able to out run me, but I could fly circles around them and get in and out of places they could only dream about. Don't take me wrong, those airplanes are works of art, but I will stick to my Bandit with the 503.

Way to go Joey! I agree with you a 100%. I have been saying this for years, that is why I built my Bandit the way I did. Just as you said, light, simple and cheap!

I agree, changing the landing gear and tailwheel would be the last option. Try Av8r3400's option's first. I sure wouldn't give up that easy. You do have to stay ahead of them, but if everything is true and you get the proper training they are a blast to fly. Remember there are all kinds of modifications you can do to improve the handling before you try to sell it.

Try Brett's new cabane spring gear and a Matco tailwheel. With that combination it will make it a different airplane.

  12. Bandit added a post in a topic Elevator trim

The cable Avid sent was just a lawn mower choke cable I think. When you moved the trim handle the wire would just bow between the mounting points going back through the fuselage. Then it had to go through two 90 degree bends to get to the trim. It never did work. I think with a better cable this system might work, but the way I have it now is just fine.

I had the manual trim cable on mine which did not work, so I took the cable out and installed a turnbuckle on my trim tab on the elevator. I go out and fly to see which way I have to trim it. When I get back on the ground I make a few turns on the tab, then go fly agin. I adjust it to fly straight and level at cruising speed. I only have to make this adjustment when I put my ski's on and again when I take them off. Then if I need to tweek it, I use the flaperons for down trim and the trim handle for up. I just used a .25 spring from the hardware store and connected it from my trim handle to the control column. Simple, light weight and cheap.

Yes, I think my gear is more firm now.The Aero Classic tires are much more firm than my old King Fox tires were to. I also think there is more drag with this gear. It seems I have to run at a little higher rpm now. Leni, I tried changing my Avatar and messed it all up. I would like to change it to the picture of the side shot on this post.
    Thanks,
    Bandit

    Ice Shanty Town
Went for a cruise today and landed on a local lake that was having a fishing contest. Then flew up the Mn. river valley for a while. Not much for snow this year, so I don't think I will put my ski's on. The new gear, tires and brake modifications have been working good so far.

  17. Bandit added a post in a topic Brake pedal modifications

This what I ended up doing. I now have enough braking power. The rudder extensions keep my toes off of the brake pedal.

  18. Bandit added a post in a topic Brake pedal modifications

I need to attach a extension to the rudder pedal because I can not tip my brake pedal forward far enough. I don't have the extended firewall with my 503 so I lose about 3" of leg room, which brings my feet closer to the seat. When that happens just the toes of my boots are resting on the rudder peddals and the brakes. I might try to grind part of the toe bracket off so I can tip the peddals forward more.

    Brake pedal modifications
I just installed Brett's brake pedal modification and I need to put some kind of rudder pedal extension so I can get my toes off of the brake pedals while taxing. What would work the best?

I thought Brett said mine are 2.5" taller and 11" wider than the standard MarkIV gear.

Yes, it is Brett's new spring gear. It is 2.5" taller and 11" wider. It makes a complete different airplane out of it. Check out my taxi test video on U-tube.

I installed Stace's wing tanks in my Bandit. The last picture is taken of my old rotten fiberglass tanks that never had a drop of ethanol put in them.
