    Ed,
I wondered why every time you sold me something you gave me a "it will take me a month or two to get to it" disclaimer!

    Odiedog,
I live in Colorado, so I haven't had the luxury of inspecting that kit in Sacramento.  I had asked him about an engine mount because I didn't see it in the pics, but I'm glad you spotted that.  As far as the interior goes, I'm guessing the seat cushions and covers are missing?  I saw the seat frames and it looked like maybe there was some carpet in one of the pics.  With the advances in seat foam, it might be better foaming and covering your own seats.
I don't have a parts list for that kit, but I have the parts list from my kit that I could send you if you wanted to do an inventory of your own on that kit?  It is about 13-15 pages long so email would work best, you could just private message me your email, I'll send you mine too.  I could text pics of them if you wanted.
I might not be able to call you until this weekend, but would enjoy talking Magnums with you.
Your rust concerns are valid for low time and humid conditions...I have heard that getting that in conditions where condensation is developed from a hot engine cooling in humidity and then sitting for long periods is what causes the problems...it is actually an AD on the Lycoming IO-360 that requires periodic visual inspection of the crank through  the plug in the front of the crank.
The cam could be corroded too, but I think the crank is the problem child most of the time.  I'm no engine expert though.
The scariest thing you said was Ukraine!  Other countries just don't keep records or do quality maintenance like the US does.  The fact that there are no logs should make the value drop drastically.  That is true on any aircraft!
I think you are spot on with the float and trailer  values.  I think the floats would be an easy sell, seems like guys are always looking for those...
    Talk to you soon,
    Ron

    Oddiedog,
Sounds like a good thought about the engine...The $50K had me intrigued because it seems to be the going price for just about every Magnum listed and this one had floats too.
You probably saw my post about a Magnum kit in Sacramento.  You could buy it build it and still spend $50K and lose 4-5 years of your life before you get to fly it

Magnum Kit for $10K (Sacramento, CA)
    Fellas,
There is an Avid Magnum Kit for sale in Sacramento, CA.  I am posting this info for the owner Dan Robinson.
Dan's brother was the original owner and he recently passed away.  Dan doesn't know much about the kit, so I thought I would help him out with what I can see in the pictures.  The pictures show a complete kit as far as I can see (minus engine of course).  Dan wasn't sure about the value of a Magnum Kit, so I told him $10K would ensure a quick deal and pass a good deal onto the buyer.  This price is more than fair (I paid a lot more for mine) and I have no doubt will be snagged quickly.  We are posting it here first to give the "Community" first shot at it.  If you are interested, contact Dan Robinson (nine-one-six )317-1954 or email robinson.dan@gmail.com
You are also welcome to PM me, Ron, with any Magnum questions that I could answer referring to the pictures...
The Kit is in a storage unit in Sacramento.
Please be courteous to Dan and refrain from tire kicking :)
    Thanks,
    Ron

    Matco Fat Tailwheel trashed
Well, 42 hours on my Matco Fat Tailwheel and I broke an internal part...
I made my first jump out of the 50 mile ring the phase one kept me in and had a real eye opener of a landing.  I was at a high elevation field that sits on a slanting mesa.  When I approached the field the winds were variable at 2 to 3 knots and some powered gliders were taking off on the downsloped runway, so instead of fighting traffic I decided to land on the downsloped runway to see what that was like...what I got was the perfect storm.  The approach was fine until about 75' high and there was a 5-10 knot crosswind, it died out and as soon as I straightened out there was no wind, right as I felt I was going to squeak one on a nice 5 knot tailwind hits.  I have my tires a bit overpressured for asphalt so those 31" of kinetic energy amplify any bounce...needless to say, I bounced about 3 times and the bounces were getting bigger so I pushed the power in and went around.  I enjoy a good challenge so I had the same experience 2 more times before I decided to land long to get some more consistent air.  It worked, I was able to get her settled on the mains and then slowly lower the tail, but as soon as the Tailwheel hit the plane began to shudder  and I had no left or right control, I was slow enough that the rudder was ineffective and I was working the brakes, but it felt as if the Tailwheel was pulling me left, I was drifting left off of the runway slowly.  I cut the engine before leaving the runway and got ready for a ride...as soon as the Tailwheel hit the grass the tail broke to the left, I did a slow 180 degree slide thanks to the wide gear and big tires, and came to a stop about 10' off in the grass.
All of the factors leading up to the Tailwheel touching the asphalt were self induced.  My newness in the aircraft led me to think that I just needed to figure things out, when I should have reversed traffic and landed on the upsloping runway...a local told me that they will land on the upsloping runway until the other runway has a 10mph favoring wind, so keep that in your pocket...
The Tailwheel had it's own issues...all the vibration had actually worked the attach nut (metal locking nut) and bolt loose and once I had weight off of the Tailwheel I could move it up or down an inch or two!  Yikes!
The cause of the vibration was a product of a stop breaking internally in the Tailwheel and it was allowing the Tailwheel to free caster in one direction and then hard catch in the other, over and over again.
I don't know what caused the damage, but I will say that asphalt is hard on the fat Tailwheel and rudder hardware.  It was hard to turn, with just too much surface contact.  I didn't even like it on grass, because the support arms were too close to the tire and would fill up with grass and dirt to the point that the wheel wouldn't free spin!
These are just my observations and experiences I want to pass on to the next guy, so don't get your feelings hurt if you love your Matco Fat Tailwheel.  It looks cool and probably works well on a lighter aircraft, and on grass and dirt.  Hope this helps somebody...

    Ron
P.S.  I put the Maule Tailwheel on and it is much more steerable on asphalt.

    TP stall
Well, I have been experimenting with different stalls and this is my favorite!
Power Off, Full Flap, stick pulled all the way back and centered left and right, using slight rudder input to level the wings
losing 500' per minute and slightly moving forward (My airspeed readings stop at 39 knots on the AHRS app).  The stall is the slight 5 degrees of nose up and down at the start of the video.
Sorry for the hairy, pasty, white legs!
    Really neat flight characteristics!

    Thomas,
Great to have another Magnum owner on here!
First, I'll try to explain what I have figured out on the flapperons before we talk numbers...The flatter the flaperron the slower, and more resistance you get on the control stick.  The more flaps you add, the less resistance and lower pressure on the stick.  That is all in general, speed being increased effects stick pressure too.
Joey explained to me that you Cruise with the negative setting, then when you want to drop in somewhere and maneuver you add Flap in...
So now that I confused you, now I'll blow your mind with the numbers.
    Degrees
    -2     Cruise position
    0.0    No Flap
7.5    Half Flap (Take off & Landing)
15.0  Full Flap (Very Slow flight & short field landing)
I originally had -3 set in the Cruise position, but it made the controls really difficult to move and wanted to roll right only.  So, I decreased to -2 degrees. This is all done from wings level measured/leveled from the 4th rib.
It is easier to takeoff with half Flap.  No flap takes longer to get airborne and stick forces are higher.  Don't take off with -2, it is just weird!
Landing with full Flap is something I'm still figuring out...It feels like the tail stops flying and the wing keeps flying and you get into a weird tail low, tail wag at really low speeds.  Could have been pilot induced, so I need to experiment more at altitude.  The neat thing is doing power off stalls with full flaps, the plane will drop it's nose straight and to the horizon, you neutralize the stick and you are flying again, without adding power!
Ok, I can't remember what I posted for Flap & aileron deflection #s, but aileron range of deflection is the same in all Flap settings...for example, if the flap is set at 0 degrees let's say you get 12 degrees down aileron and 10 degrees up aileron (I made those #s up) They will deflect the same amount added or subtracted from the flap setting.  So at 15 degrees of flap the aileron input will add 12 down to one side and add 10 up on the other...same amount of aileron travel in all Flap positions.
If you haven't made a way to lock the flap handle in position, you will want to.  I made a flap handle holder out of nylon block, actually a plastic cutting board from Safeway.  I'll post a pic, but there are several ways to skin that cat...
I'll pm my email address and if this isn't making sense we can talk there.

Glad to have you on here!  Post a pic in the Magnum section if you get time...

    Ron
This is actually the first flap handle holder I made.  That is carbon fiber vinyl on top of the nylon block.
I'll try to take pics of the second version next time I'm out there.

I'm using an iLevil 2AW hardwired to the GRT-4000 and pitot static input lines.  The iLevil 2AW sets up a wifi network and broadcasts all of the info to the iPads wirelessly (actually it can broadcast it to up to as many as 11 devices.)
I'm running the iLevil AHRS app on the pilot side and WingX Pro 7 on the copilot side.
It is pretty slick...the only challenges I've had have been alarm thresholds on the GRT 4000 being set incorrectly, by myself...go figure, and I had alarm bells and lights flashing the whole first couple of flights.
    Thanks,
    Ron

Flying 40 hours off in a 50nm radius
Well 40 hours is more than I usually fly in a year, so I have just about worn all of the site seeing out!  However, I have some good pics!
A buddy made this Stainless steel sign for me!
The Spanish Peaks near Walsenburg CO
Rock ridge running up the Spanish Peaks, 50'-100' tall in places
    small ski resort...
Surprisingly all of the avionics work great, except my Radio which you can barely receive on...using a handheld for now.
I love flying through this canyon on the cucharas river.  There is an Air Force wreck on one of the ridges.
    Great sunset at Walsenburg!
The entrance of the Royal Gorge.  If you zoom in you can kind of see the bridge across it.  The bridge is 1000' above the river below...a must see!
In the far background is Pikes Peak!
I don't know if it is possible to zoom in on this one, but it is a picture of a Chemical Weapons storage base outside of Pueblo.
This is really cool!  See the triangle in the bottom right?  It is a WWII Auxiliary Training Airfield for B-25s and B-24s South of Lake Meredith, CO
Taking a lower look...Farm equipment on each leg of it and some large wooden posts driven on the ends of each runway, but concrete is still there...6000' long legs!!!
What it looked like in 1945...It had a control tower and maintenance shed in the middle, they are gone now.
Well, it is a lot of fun!  I'm still working out numbers for you guys...I keep adjusting things and it changes everything.
    See ya,
    Ron

Nope Jim...spot on!  I do have the ram air tubes going to each wing tank and the also have a tube running to each other.  I think all of that is working, I think it was just my screen being blocked and one tank being empty.
Ed, I had outsmarted the DAR and safety wired the switches with very thin wire so I could break it easily.  I have a fuel master switch 3 feet forward of that for an emergency shutoff.  I think the thin safety wire is actually not a bad idea, it will help inadvertently flipping the valve shut, otherwise your point is valid.
One thing I thought about doing, but I really ran out of room, is running a parallel, unfiltered fuel line with a facet pump inline...It would help in most fuel issues, but not in my situation because it was blocked in the tank itself.
Anyway, thanks for the ideas, I'm looking at all of them.  I wish the Magnum was closer to the other Avids...I sure have some Magnum specific questions.

    Thanks,
    Ron

Thanks for the input guys...I do have valves on each header tank and could manipulate those valves to correct an imbalance.  I have them safety wired on because another guy on the forum said the DAR made him do that.
I do have clearish fuel lines where I can see fuel moving through.
I believe the fuel caps are non venting, but I do have tank vent lines and one of them could easily be clogged.  I will clean those out.
Leni, I was thinking it was one wing low as well.  It is feeding much more equally now and I'll just plan on checking those filters every time I get the fuel low for the first 100 hours or so...
Ed, luckily I had read his posts and the problems with putting a clear filter too close to the tanks and not having enough fuel pressure to push the fuel through a clogged filter.  When it happened I knew exactly what was wrong, just had no way to fix it.
As far as the low fuel warning goes, if you have a single header tank you could use the "red cube" by flow scan...It has been right on when calculating fuel flow, burn and remaining fuel...you need something for it to interface with like the GRT 4000 EIS.  But I think you are looking for a low cost sensor, I had looked, but never found one.  I wonder if motorcycles/ATVs might have one?

    Thanks again,
    Ron

I could use a case after today...
I have one wing tank (Left side) that likes to stay full until the right Tank is empty even though the piping is identical on both sides.  I was concerned that the finger strainer was clogged in the left tank, so I did a flow test and both sides drained at equal paces.
I had flown for 2.5 hours and the right tank was empty, I was watching the left tank closely and it was beginning to decrease.  I was about 2 miles from the pattern and the engine began to sputter, I went full rich and the engine came back to life then died.  I then suspected an obstruction and flipped on my fuel boost pump, the engine kicked back on but I could only get low rpms.  It continued to sputter on and off.
The only thing that saved me was that I had been up at 11,500 MSL with a field elevation of 4,700 MSL and luckily was still pretty high when this all happened.
I landed safely and almost cleared the runway but had to get out and push it past the hold short line...aka the push of shame.
I drained the rest of the fuel and found the infamous fiberglass particle around the finger strainer issue!  I had read about it on here, but hoped it wouldn't happen...
I took it back up again and it ran fine and the left tank still doesn't drain equally, but it is better than before!
All I can say is thank God for altitude and fuel boost pumps!
I know this is not inline with the original thread, but Ed brought up another beer being needed
I totally agree with your thoughts Ed and I think I will be building larger surfaces.  I did try shimming the leading edge of the horizontal stab and about the only outcome I noticed was that I was able to fly the tail sooner on takeoff...but that could have been wind related too...so many variables that it is hard to tell.
I remember Chris B talking about having to adjust the horizontal stab...I might give him another shout too...
keep the thoughts coming...I'll keep cheating death!

Let us know which one you are looking at too...there have been a couple of shady ones out there lately.  By shady I mean registration issues...Phase one not flown off, tail numbers and ID tags removed.  And like Joey mentioned, electrical nightmares!
Make sure the A&P you hired is one you trust. I once had the A&P that had always done the maintenance on the plane I was buying do the pre buy/annual...mistake!!!
As I was flying off in my new plane and trying to figure it out, I found that the vacuum pump and alternator were bad...then on the first landing I found that the internal tailwheel parts were broken as I was taken on a wild ride .  I blame myself for being so trusting of a stranger...So hire someone you know and trust, even if you have to buy them a roundtrip ticket, it is worth it!
    Good luck, let us know...

Ahhh...this is making more sense to me now.
    No Flap setting is -3
The CG is in the forward envelope because of the heavy engine/pilot
I noticed the higher speed was making the tail work like I thought it would...slow operations are strange...there is almost a delay to the input which made me put more in, then it is way too much, and the natural reaction is a bunch the other way!  One of those and I was thinking what the Hell!
I was also trying to 3 point my landings which is not working well with the drastic nose up position...So I have been wheeling them on and I have those down pat.
The prop thing is interesting too, because I have an extreme climb prop on it now.  So from what you are saying, that might also be causing the tail sag.

Thanks guys, you gave me some things to think about...

Thanks guys, that makes me feel better...I have been trying to wake my feet up again, I spent too much time flying things that didn't require much foot work.
I feel like you push the pedal, there is a hesitation and then it moves the tail...at slow speeds...

    Slipping?
    another question...
I decided to try slipping the Magnum to loose some altitude.  I had the left wing low, pushing the stick forward and left, then pushed in right rudder. To my surprise the airplane began not just doing a slip, but the nose of the plane kept turning right to the point that I was looking down the wing at the point I was headed toward...probably turned 70-80 degrees to my flight path!  It felt like it would have gone further!
I have never experienced that in an airplane before...most of the time you cram as  much rudder in as possible.
    Is this normal for Avids?

    Thanks,
    Ron

    Flight Control issues...
    Hey Guys,
I have logged about 15 hours on my Magnum...it has been a lot of fun figuring everything out, but I am at the point that I think I need to make adjustments and need your advice.
First, I believe the tail is flying too low and that the horizontal stabilizer leading edge needs to be raised up.  The reasons I think this is needed is the fact that I am flying around with full "up" trim (Trim tab all the way down), I also am experiencing strange rudder flight characteristics with yaw and no roll with rudder deflection.  I think this is due to the rudder authority being washed out by the prop.
So do you think lifting the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer is a move in the right direction?

    Thanks,
    Ron
