I need a while - maybe a long while - to digest all of this. I've heard that ultralights are more critical in turbulance, and guess this is the reason. Well, maybe everyone needs to think about this for a while.

That was what I thought I had been taught too. Barnaby says it is just the opposite: Lighter means more reduced manuvering speed than heavier ones.
Guess we all need to increase our weights (maybe eat more?) to go faster and pull up to avoid the trees!!!

Thanks for the great photos Doug. Looks like your skylight overlaps by 1/4 to 1/2 inch over the wings. I did not understand that.

    MANUVERING SPEEDS
Nobody ever said that "Old pilot are smart pilots": Maybe old pilots sometimes cannot comprihend things that the young pilots are taught, like Va, Vb, Vc, and all those alphabet things that we older pilots have to say in longhand American.
I just read Barnaby's article in the new Sport Aviation mag, and I totally don't understand how a manuver or wind gust can overstress a plane at a lower weight and not at a higher weight. I follow all of his articles with intense interest, but am lost on this one. Looks like to me that if you are at max gross, then any strain on the wings could put you in danger faster than if you are lighter.
Can someone smarter than me explain this to where I can understand it?

    FIBERGLAS BUTT RIBS
THEY SAY, That the only stupid question is the one you failed to ask:
Well, here is one that may sound stupid, but I really need an answer.
I have the fiberglas butt ribs for the magnum, and want to use them. I also have the Magnum manual, but I cannot tell from the manual if the U-side, guess you could say the open side, of the butt ribs goes toward the wing, or toward the fuselage.
    Can anyone help on this?
Also, Piper has a special rubber seal that goes between the butt ribs and the root ribs on the wing: Like any "certified part", it is costly. Is there any way to seal the Kitfox / Avid root ribs to the butt ribs? I think that the skylight overlapping the root ribs could cause abrasion on the fabric.
    Thanks again,

Does anyone (Doug?) know or can find out what thickness Joanne Heckman used for the leading edge covering?
Anyone have recommendations? I was wondering if 1/16 would be thick enough. Now thinking about top and bottom for platform to attach VGs.

I really liked the baggage / sleeping room in the Airdale. Great for Alaska, but don't camp out here. My fuselage has been widened six inches at the elbows. Still close with two on board. Got to go with what I have. Hopefully to welder this week, and working on LE extensions while it is gone to finish wings. I still carry the Carharts - but rarely need them here.
My boat seats set me six inches higher, and short legs are comfortable. Had to raise cabin roof six inches to compensate, so have a taller plane now. I really beefed up the landing gear attachments and tubes - seen too many bent there. Got Grove gear, and dont need anything bigger than 600 x 6 tires here.
    Thanks for all the info.

    Doug,
My design book says that if you angle those Hoerner tips in at about six degrees from back to front, with the trailing edge being the longest, you will cut your drag. But it did not say how much.
I plan to install mine that way, so I wont have any comparison on cruise speeds for that mod.
One degree = about .017 per inch, so you can figure out the measurements.
Dont know anything about the engineering where they put the extra rivets in the Magnum strut attachments, but put them on mine, figuring that "more must be better".

I agree with all that you wrote.
I could have bought an Airdale years ago, and could have done the stretch - however, because of personal things, which I wont explain, a shortage of airplane cash, stubborness, hard-headiness, determination, and curiosity, I decided to do things a different way, by extending the Leading edges and increasing tail feathers, like Steve Wittman's designs, and other planes in the past.
I just hope that my way turns out to be workable, and flyable, when I am finished. I don't know if it is a "fix-all", but will share my findings in case it helps someone else if they are in a similiar position.

Sounds like Wolf Lake strip has improved and enlarged a lot since I was there.
Cliff was one of the early tennants. Probably still has a spot there. He passed me on the A & P oral exam - only took 3 years at UAA to pound that bit of info into my thick head!

Apprediate all the info. I have a dual conversion plan drawn by (Messinger?). Don't know if I will use it.

Good suggestion Doug, regarding the thin plywood. I wanted to add an aluminum sheet under my extended LE, but was concerned about dents, heat expansion, gluing to wood ribs, etc. I am only going to add the plywood from new LE back to spar, to save weight, and probably will add VGs under the wing after flight tests.
Happy Birthday to you and C5.

AND, The 210 pound 233? Not much improvement or performance gain here over the 170 pound, much cheaper, C-85, C-90, O-200 IMO, unless you need the fuel injection to get over the mountains. NOTE: Our highest "mountain?" here is 1700 MSL, and most mountain passes are less than 4000, so I've heard.
Don't know how long the Stratus mount is, but mine only leaves enough room to slip the fanbelt between the engine and firewall.

    KITFOX RADIAL
QUESTION: Just read article in EAA mag this month about Kitfox 7 Radial. How did they manage CG with a 235 pound engine when we are having to add ballast or LE extensions for our 200 pound Soobs? Anybody got an answer? IMO, a $75K experimental, like some other $100K LSAs has left us budget-builders out of the game.

  15. EDMO added a post in a topic EA-82 Power

Believe I have found some info on the EA-82. Photo on RAM Performance site, South Carolina, looks like it was a double-overhead cam engine, much wider and heavier than the EA-81. I had remembered that it was not as desirable as the 81, although RFI did convert some of them with redrives for gyros or rotorcraft. Also believe the flywheel housing was cast in one piece with the block, instead of a seperate casting as for the 81.

The heads on mine were milled 040, and the seller said to use mid-range mogas. Guess I will find out if I can run 87.
Do you have dual coils too, and electronic switching? Do I really need dual pickups? How much do they cost?
Mine has single set of points. Will double-check letters about max deg BTDC. Also, will decide if I need a primer, or can use that fitting for a carb temperature gage, or plug it. Never needed a primer on my 318 Dodge - Same Holly 2 brl - accelerator pump worked fine, just pump it 3 times when cold.
    Again, thanks for info

Believe one of our guys in EAA 32 had one on his Eggenfeldner engine. Had disks or something backward and lost engine power until he figured it out, but it sure was quiet.
I have heard that the Stratus is very good.

Wonder if he has the Stratus muffler? Heard they were good, and may add 10 hp, but $400, if that is right, is costly. Right now I am thinking about two 12inch long glasspacks as a cheap option. We don't do much sandbar flying here - biggest concern is finding flat land that is not wall-to-wall trees.

I only know what I have read and heard. Maybe the 912 is better than the 2-strokes for maintenance? But what about overhauls?
And, if I have to put out $20K for an engine, I may as well go with a certified, or better yet, a cheaper, used certified.
My budget is limited, so I have to go cheap, and the Soob is cheap and reliable, and really cheap to rebuild and maintain.
    IMO, To each his own.

Shucks, I have just told Herman about the bad winds at Wolf Lake....maybe that was just bad windy days? You know Cliff Stockton? He was one of my instructors at UAA Aviation.
Dave may have changed after hitting the bottom of the lake in his original Avid, and nearly losing his wife in it. His "landing strip" a narrow gravel road going uphill and lined with trees, with limbs a foot in diameter hanging across the road and houses scared hell out of me. Took more guts than I had to put a 182 into that disaster waiting to happen.
Yes, Ultralite "lost power and hit electric lines" probably will say "pilot error for not going under the wires", but definately an engine problem. Agree, They all need TLC.

P,S. Seems like I heard that the runway & approach to Wolf Lake have been improved since I was there dropping in over treetops?

Guess I did not meet your friend in F&G. One of them is carrying my old 45/70 in his plane. Neighbor across street from me worked for F&G. Lots of good memories there. Will get back someday for vacation. I still have family there. Son-in-law is fishing guide on Kenai River at Sterling. Friend, David Goode at Nikiski, let me take photos as he built the #1 Airdale. Really appreciate the companionship and non-adversity of everyone on this site too.
Just had ultralite crash near here - 2 cycle Rotax, of course!!! Sorry, but I am sooo predudiced...........

Only one minor correction here: Not "10 Miles" - Not even 10 blocks, and you will be in "The Bush" as we call it. My wife was startled to see a Bull Moose walking down the sidewalk by Costco in the middle of Anchorage. I then took her about 6 blocks from my house and showed her 3 more big Mooses. I flew with fish & game tracking bears from Anchorage, and we spotted 8 brown bears with radio collars on before leaving the city limits. I think we spotted about 15 bears that day within a few miles of Anchorage and Eagle River.
Gosh, all this talk really makes me "homesick" for Alaska: I loved living there! Just can't afford it on my retirement pension.
"Outsiders", as we call everyone else, cannot imaging how big, varied, wild, and beautiful Alaska is.
I never got to take the inside passage boatride, but sure would like to someday.
Thats about all I got to say about that. (I think)

I believe the original Dan Denny was filmed with an 8mm camera. I think I used to have a copy of it on VCS, but got my doubts about ever finding it in my boxes of unlabeled tapes.
    Loved watching your videos.
Dang, I missed out on all the fun - my first solo was in a 1929 Stearman, and no one had any video cameras back then.

Just imagine the diference between the Maule and a Cessna 182 or heavy Piper. Now, you have a light bird that floats on landing and finds all the potholes and bumps in the air, but great fun flying.

Well, the military is loaded with our $$$! Old retirees are not. Also, lazy, poor, A & Ps dont like high cost/maintenance on old long-stroke, magneto-failing, engines. Also have the same thoughts about Rotax. Changing the $1 sparkplugs in the Soob every 100,000 miles is enough for me.;<)
