WARP DRIVE VS IVO IFA SETTINGS
QUESTION for EX-Warp Drive pilots who switched to IVO IFA:
If there are no sandbars or other tight places to get in and out of, how much would your take-off increase if you set a Warp Drive to the cruise pitch that your IVO sets at to give you that extra cruise speed? And, what do you think that setting would be?
I realize that they are not the same prop - if you cycle from take-off to cruise on the ground, you could measure the differences in degrees.
I am mainly talking about Soob, but other comparisons might be helpful.

This would be clean, I guess? What about varing degrees of flaps? Is this at gross weight? Should be less at lighter weights?
    Lots to consider here.
Thanks for formula. but it don't compute in my mind: Wing Loading of 9, square root = 3 x 3.7 = 11 aprox mph stall?
What if your wing loading was 6?
Wouldn't the Coefficient of lift have to be used in this calculation? It can vary from 1.3 clean to above 2.0 flapped.
And how about Reynolds numbers in the formula? Lift slope? planform, etc?
Seems to me, that there are a lot of variables in calculating stall speed: Don't see how one formula can fit all.

I once watched a video of some idiot - forget what monoplane he was flying - doing low-level loops. The final shot showed the trees coming thru the prop!!! Quite starteling - think he survived - plane didnt. Believe NSTB had the film.

If that doesn't fix the leak, then maybe you could tap it out to next size, and use a reducer bushing, or buy the next size drain.

Loctite and others make a paste Teflon thread sealer that is far better than the tape. The tape should never be used for any fitting. However, I don't know if the paste is ethenol-proof, and it certainly won't replace stripped threads. It is good on most metal fittings, but better is the Loctite Hydraulic sealer - think the number is 545, but will have to check on that. Teflon paste is good for air and water fittings, the hydraulic sealer is for fuel and oil fittings, and is good for anything.
Best to go with what Doug recommended.

    GASCOLATOR CHOICE
I have a standard 3/8 line gascolator, but need to know if I need to go to the pressurized gascolator if I put my dual electric fuel pumps inside the firewall, between the tanks and the gascolator. My Holly carb needs 2 to 6 lb of pressure - certainly not the pressure that fuel injection takes.

Also, Airdale used a 1970's or 1980's Ford 6 cyl pickup fuel pumps on Airfdale #1. Anyone know anything about them?
Dave Johnson told me that the Facet would need rebuilding after sitting for the winter, and he started using one from Automotive Accessories, but I never got the model.

My early Magnum manual shows 3 pieces of .090 ALUMINUM, 2 FEET LONG, riveted to form a "T", for the stiffener.
At first glance, I said, "500 MTOW shouldn't need stiffeners", but after thinking of the gust loads being greater stress on the ultralites than heavier planes, (Back to Barnaby Wainfain article on maneuvering speeds), then the inserts might be needed more on the lighter plane than the others?
However, I agree with Doug - if others haven't broke, then you are probably safe without them

If Orville and Wilbur lived there, we would still be walking!!! Enjoy any flight video. Yes, flatland is boring, but better than driving any day!!!
5000 feet? Gosh, NO - I-m afraid of heights! 500 feet is plenty for me. Just have to miss all those towers that seem to be multiplying by the hundreds.

Wonder if that was the bunch of PHD "Rocket Scientists" that did some dumbass things on other shows?
I think PHD stands for "Phoney Hazardous & Dumb", or any other words you can use without going to jail !
And to think that they get paid for that garbage!!!

DAR/FAA Question: In order to pass the airworthiness inspection, all instruments have to be marked?
Well, I can mark my never excede speed (red line) my flaps operating range (white arc), and my caution range (yellow arc), and the upper part of my green arc - but not knowing stall speeds before testing, how can one mark the lower end of the ASI without flight testing first?
    Guestimate, and correct later???
NOTE: mine is scratch-built - not factory standard.

Figured it was something like that. Will remark mine if I put twin Soobs on it! Been too long since I flew twins.
For the single-engine, the red line should still be at stall speed, I think. I never look at it when landing - from flare to touchdown, too busy trying to fly - or not fly!!!

I had to take a second look at that too Doug.
The Red line at the lower airspeed is in the wrong place. It should be below the green arc, and should indicate the stall speed. Some pilots put a short yellow arc between the red line and the lower end of the green arc to represent a safety factor before sure flying speed is reached, or to indicate being close to stall speed espedially when winds are gusty.
The BLUE LINE - I never heard of it and dont have a clue, unless it could have something to do with one engine operation on a twin,
But really dont think that is the answer. Got to dig out my AMT books again!!!

In case someone missed it on another post: I am adding 1mm (3/64) plywood, 12 inches on top, and 6 inches on bottom of new LE so that I will have a platform for VGs later on after flight-testing.

  15. EDMO added a post in a topic Model 7 Kitfox

I have my doubts about the heavy Kitfox 0-200, landing shorter than the 150 if both are at same weight: Those big, 40 degree flaps really slow down the 150. That's why mine will have flaps and not flaperons - but most importantly, better roll control with ailerons and flaps for those Kansas crosswinds we seem to get a lot.
I was once told by an old pilot that the Kansas windspeed indicator is a 6 foot log chain nailed to a stump: If the end of the chain is even with the top of the stump, then it is too windy to fly!!!

Sorry to hear that anyone is leaving Alaska. I certainly left part of me there, but circumstances prevail for each of us.
Flying down here is about as exciting as catching "bait fish" here after filling the freezer with Salmon and Halibut in Alaska.
I buy smoked Alaskan salmon at Costco, when they have it. Atlantic salmon is yucky, compared to Alaskan Sockeye.
Just go from concrete runway to concrete runway, and once in a while to a private dirt strip if invited.
Quit hunting too - nothing big enough or dangerous enough to shoot here.
Do you know where Dave is relocating? What company did you/he work for? Oil/Gas?
Give Dave my best wishes if you see him again.

Good photo and description. I will go check my factory KF2 ASI and see how they marked it to compare with Maneuvering speed listed.
When I mark my new ASI, the yellow will start at 80 - my conservative estimate of a "slow-down and don't break it" speed for my plane.

Not disagreeing with you on the yellow arc - that is correct. However, lets say the top of the green mark is the manuvering speed, or maximum cruise speed in turbulant air (at gross weight, I think), so the start of the yellow is still the manuvering speed.

I wouldn't worry about it. Just slow down for manuvers and turbulance to the lower speed. 85 is nowhere near your stall speed.

P.S. I don't think any of us will be doing aerobatics in this type of plane anyway. I went up with a WW2 instructor in a T-34 some years ago, and decided quickly that I was not capable of being a fighter pilot. After only about 3 minutes of twists, turns, etc, I asked him to please fly level back to the airport and let me get out and try to walk, or just sit down and watch the world spin by!

Don't take much to confuse me. I am going with caution, and mark my ASI with the lower numbers for the yellow arc.
I think I would lean toward Ed Downs' numbers.

Quoting from "KITFOX PILOT'S GUIDE" by Ed Downs, it looks like the "lighter is slower" holds true here.
Kitfox Lite = 62 mph Manuvering Speed
    Model 1-532 = 75
    Model 2-582 = 76 Model 3-582 = 76 Model XL-503 = 76
    Model 4-1050-582 = 82 Lite Squared-503 =82
    Classic 4-618 = 85 Lite Squared 912 = 85 912S = 85
    Series 5/1400-912 =88
    Series 5/1400-912S = 92 Series 5/6-0-200 = 92 Series 5/6-0-235 = 92 Series 5/6-IO240B =92
    All Series 7 = 92
Guess you can compare each of these to the Avid / Airdale?
Don't have a clue why Doug's POH says different. Maybe ask Kitfox?

I believe that the manuvering speeds for Kitfoxes is published. am thinking it was 80 to 88 mph depending on the model - will have to check the book on them, because that sounds fast - thats cruise for some of them. Isn't manuvering speed indicated on the markings on the Airspeed Indicator for each plane?
I could be wrong on the indicator, but think that this is where the yellow mark starts between the green arc and red line?

Thanks for the info Doug. I will use something similiar. Probably 12 inches on top and 6 inches on bottom of L$E estension.
Maybe someday, someone will try modifying the Hoerner tips, and give us a report.

QUESTION for anyone: I used T-88 when I built my ribs, then 9460 to glue them to the spars. Should I use T-88 to glue the plywood to the ribs, or the 9460 that I will use to glue the new rib extensions to the new 1 1/4 inch aluminum tube leading edge?
I have estimated that my cost will be about $300 for the new leading edge extensions, including a new can of 9460, and can add another $250 for the plywood. Still cheaper than the 16 inch stretch, and don't have to re-engineer everything from firewall back.
    Any thoughts are welcomed.

Correction: My LE plywood will only be $125. I misfigured price from Spruce.
