Welcome to the club! Not politically or TKF correct: probably have a bounty out for me? AKFlyer is unpopular with the site too!
Now, what toes did you step on?

Lots of others have said the same. Someone sent me an ad about an epoxy sloshing for motorcyle tanks, and it looks like a winner for leaking aircraft tanks of any type. I dont have it on this new puter, but can find it in my printouts if anyone needs it.

I bought my tanks direct from Ron's Fiberglass, the one who made tanks for Skystar or Denny. He no longer makes the tanks since Kitfox took over.
I tried to get him to tell me what epoxy was used, and he only would say, "It's commercial grade, and you cant buy it."
Still would like to know what they are made of. I have always used the West system for personal use. The Ren 1710 epoxies that I used commercially are too costly for small home projects.

  4. EDMO added a post in a topic Flapperon hinges?

KITFOX SITE had a mod with drawings of the reinforcement that the UK required. Might also be in some manuals?
Believe it was .025 aluminum with several rivets, bent 90 and went full width of hanger and up into rib several inches. Think trailing edge was slit?
Since I am going with BIG flaps and ailerons, I am adding 1/8 x 1 x 9 flat aluminum on each side of hanger, but I tend to overbuild.
Somewhere in between might be a good compromise.

    ED IN MO - RTS
Appreciate all the kind comments - at least no one said, "Good riddence"!
BAD NEWS: Insurance will not pay for cutter, rivets and stitches until I go thru 6 weeks of physical torture (they call it therapy).
GOOD NEWS: Can still type while taking pain pills.
BAD NEWS: Doc wants to stop pain pills which don't totally stop pain!!!! (But, with a Bud Lite or two, I feel better!)
GOOD NEWS: I have Leading Edge plywood parts cut out, and now can sand and fit. Will post some photos when I get them glued in.
BAD NEWS: STILL GROUCHY AND IN PAIN!
    Best wishes to all.

What kind of clamps are on the tubes in upper part of photo? They look expensive. Do they work better than Adel clamps?
    What battery is that?

    Randy,
Dont know what the problem is. Opens for me. Daughter was one who put the other attachments upside down. Took me three tries to attach this one - Hell, if my plane flew by puter, I would be forever grounded!!!!!

I was only kicking around some alternatives for making the inserts for the .083 spars, since you cant buy them.
Please note my comments about the aluminum pipe / I beam. I think that would be better, but needs to be welded,
although I guess you could glue the aluminum parts together.
If you can buy factory insterts for the Kitfox .065, then by all means, do that instead of making your own.
I was thinking too, that wood will swell or shrink with age, and PVC and aluminum wont.
Didn't mean to stir up a fuss. Mostly wanted to hear some other alternatives.
Mine has factory full webs, so thinking about adding an insert on each side of original where strut attaches.

Actually, I have already done that experiment. Try it for yourself with sched 40 pressure pipe.
And, it may bend a little bit more, but dont crack or kink, even with 20 lbs of weight on it, and that was without a center rib.
And at only two feet, barely any give at all.

I can almost garantee that sched. 40 PVC pipe is stronger/tougher than plywood - and probably thin aluminum, but it is about 1/4 inch thick, and would be heavier.
If you need the drawing for the Magnum strut rivets, I can post that.
Haven't got the photo of the MAPs yet - will try this weekend.

  15. EDMO added a post in a topic SHEAR AND BENDING STRENGTH OF AN BOLTS

The grade is based on the Alloy used, strength, and of course heat-treating, which can make them tougher and harder.
Usually, the optimum between toughness and hardness is where you want them to be. So, after quench hardening, they are reheated to a temperature which gives them that and makes them less brittle by "tempering".

Thanks Doug, That gives me some ballpark figures - think it is in my Machinists Handbook too.
However, No answers on AN bolts in it. I know that is published somewhere. Not in AC43-13.
    Will check my AMT books.
Havent used Fastenal since I left the government.
Last time I needed 6 Belleville washers: Fastenal would sell only a box of 50 for $518.00.
    I got 6 from Grainger for $30.

SHEAR AND BENDING STRENGTH OF AN BOLTS
Anyone know where to get the shear and bending strengths of AN bolts?
Need sizes from 1/4 to 5/8 diameter.
Wondering how they compare to Grade 8, 9 & 12.
I know that the costs are high because of the testing to certify them. Not concerned with cost - just strength.

And, dont forget the extra rivets the Magnum has in the strut attachments.

Now here is a question or suggestion for someone with more experimental engineering knowledge than I have:
WHAT IF; You found a PCV pipe that would fit inside your spars, and used that as an insert?
Of Course, you would want to "V" the ends like the originals to keep from having strain points.
PVC comes in different thicknesses, and you could glue it and/or rivet it in place. Even glue a vertical PVC or aluminum beam inside it?
I just looked at a 2 inch, schedule 40 PVC pipe, and it measured about 2 3/8 inches diameter, about right for the .065 spar, but did not put a micrometer on it. Could be lathe turned down to fit .083 spars.
You can buy flat PVC boards.
OR: Weld a vertical inside an aluminum pipe that fits - split a pipe and reweld it to size? Make your own I-beam insert with top and bottom pieces cut from pipe?
Of course, this would have to be done before riveting the strut attachments to spars.
Just thinking of alternatives. Mine already have the full web. But thinking of putting in another short vertical web insert in addition to it, or one on each side of it.

Randy, Why dont you contact Airdale for your .083 inserts?
OR, slim the ,065 inserts to fit your tube?
Those I-beams look better than the one in my Magnum manual, Never could figure out why they only built up one side,.

This is not the first article I have read regarding the cautions of gust loads with light aircraft, especially ultralights.
I believe that some of it is because they are not built as strong as the heavier ones?

Try Kitfox. But Look at the above post about Just.
Kitfox has been kind enough to sell me parts and supplies even tho they know I am doing a scratchbuilt.
